2nd Day Draft Ideas...

ESPN just ran an article citing four guys that stand out as interesting 2nd day draft prospects:

Josh Johnson, QB, San Diego.
Jack Williams, CB, Kent State.
Mike Humpal, ILB, Iowa.
Corey Lynch, S, Appalachian State.

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...

Who do you have your eye on for day-two steals?

Star-divide

Of the list presented, the guy I know best is from my current neighborhood:

Corey Lynch, S, Appalachian State. Remember the guy who blocked a field goal attempt in the final seconds and saved Appalachian State's upset win over Michigan last year? That was Lynch. In addition to being an excellent special teams player, he also has great ball skills, which his 24 career interceptions prove. This won't affect his draft status, but his wife is the granddaughter of Rev. Billy Graham.

He's been a stud for App for years now, and just seems to have a nose for the ball.  As with any guy on day two, there are doubts as to his ability to make it in the NFL.  I think he'll be a Ratliff type guy who is hard to keep off the field.

The other category that is always interesting with 2nd day guys is the whole "senior year hurt" (I always think Canty) or "trouble in paradise" (drugs or johnny Law) ... what guys fit this category this year?

My bad...

The article (obviously) is NOT from ESPN, but from The Sporting News - as the link makes obvious.

Tar Heels football will surprise this year.

Im on board...

with Josh Johnson.

I'd also love to see us take a flyer on a gigantic NT like Athyba Rubin (Iowa State).

Pretty curious about Josh Johnson myself. . .

As for the rest of the draft - William Frankin is interesting in the 3rd, Steve Slaton as a second day pick (4th rounder we swapped with Miami) is a must to me, Dre Moore in the 5th as a future 3-4 DE, I also like DE Brian Johnston as a project to move to OLB from Gardner-Webb in the 6th/7th based on what I've read of him, and CB Brian Witherspoon for his speed (4.29 40) as a FA pickup.

Brian Johnston DE/OLB Gardner Webb

Nice choice, I was putting him in my mock as a 6th round pick. There is a great write up on him over at USA Today's Top 500 players.

T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003.

The problem with Johnston.....

Is that he’s no secret to scouts….As I had read he’s highly coveted….as posted on http://www.draftdaddy.com

Gardner-Webb defensive end Brian Johnston could go as high as the third round. I have heard many scouts from 4-3 teams say they absolutely love him. Few know this, but his 10 yard split at his Pro Day was the same as Darren McFadden’s. Also, his Pro Day shuttle time bested every defensive lineman and running back at the Combine in Indianapolis! I think Rashard Mendenhall may’ve tied his number, but the dude is a freak. I know a lot teams think he could be the next Aaron Kampman or Jared Allen.

Jerrod ? I got some bad news for ya...

I want Will Franklin as well...I'm pretty sure he'll be there with our 3rd round pick....but he is generally regarded as a 4th round pick...A slight reach...but I'm willing to do it if NT's Bryant and Rubin are gone.

I love the guys you mentioned...BUT
there is no way Dre Moore is getting to the 5th round...He's projected to go in the 2nd round, 3rd at the latest.

Brian Johnston...I love...Your right on....He'll be a situational pass rusher in the mold of Greg Ellis...I have us taking him with our 6th rounder in my latest mock..He's still very raw, and not considered strong against the run...but that will develope...as Wade Phillips sez..."You can never have enough pass rushers"...and he's a good one.

Witherspoon.....hey...If he's around UFA....bring 'em in...lord knows we need the help...I heard some good things about him.

Cory Lynch.....the next Bill Bates ?

A small school 3 time 1st Team All American....the dude sure put up some productive numbers (24 career picks)...albeit against weaker competition...worth a UFA signing at least....looks to be a deamon on special teams...at the very least a viable backup at SS. He kinda has that Justin Berrault<ms> look to him..

With the loss of Keith Davis

It would be nice to get a special teams ace in the mold of Bill Bates.  We'll see where Lynch gets drafted though.

I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Ikegwuonu, the injured CB from Wisconsin.  He might have been taken in the top two rounds otherwise.

I couldn't agree more

I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Ikegwuonu, the injured CB from Wisconsin.  He might have been taken in the top two rounds otherwise.

He will drop in the drsft because of the injury, but would be a steal in the fourth or fifth round, he's better suited as a safety in the pros.

Trade up a few spots to get ahead of Houston and draft Jonathan Stewart, thee best all around Back in the draft.

To answer your diary question Dala.........

There is a WR who missed all but three games this past season to a knee injury....His considerable talents still got him recognized to perform at this years scouting combine...a very unlikely feat...especially coming from a small school program...

Arman Shields- WR Richmond 5'11" 194lbs..4.44 40

I don't know a whole lot about him, have seen some video on him, looks to be an aggressive, tough receiver..could turn into something special...If we don't draft a WR in the first 4 rounds...I'd sure love to take a flyer on this guy in the 6th-7th round..

He is the only WR to come in the top 10 in all seven main events at the scouting combine...

On combine numbers alone...this guy is an extremely gifted athlete.....

Arman Shields is a GREAT example

I like this guy, and have actually seen him play! I don’t get to many college games, so that’s saying something. He seems a natural #2 and could even prove to be a #1 WR … I would love it if we take him. And you’re right, BoysR, he’s a good example of the under the radar guys.

You want under the radar ???....Check this dude out !!

Andy Studebaker…A Div. III DE/OLB from little Wheaton College…He stands 6’3” 255lbs. ...A workout warrior who is monster in the weight room, leading the team in every lifting event….and even a bigger MONSTER on the field….He was held to only 5 games this pass season because of the dreaded Lisfranc injury….That was operated on by The Chicago Bears team surgeon…He’s doing well, and will be ready for traing camp…...

In 2006 he posted 17 1/2 sacks….and who knows how many pressures, tackles for loss, etc etc….

He is now my pet cat…...Now THIS is a dude to throw a 6th-7th round flyer on…

EVEN while still rehabbing this injury, and bearly 4 weeks to prepare for this event…HE blew away the 13 team scouts that showed up to check him out….I am pissed the Cowboys weren’t represented…although I’m not positive they weren’t there…just not mentioned is all….,

He performed recently at Northwesterns’s Pro Day April 18th….. 4.60 in the 40…twice…although with little workout and a lingering foot, he seems to believe he’s more of a 4.5 40 guy….At that size ...that’s impressive…10’7” long jump….36 1/2” verticle jump, 1.46- 10 yard split, 2.65- 20 yard split…..excellent times in the 20 and 60 cone drills, and the 3 cone….WR type numbers….geeeeez…Jerry…sign this guy….Bobby Carpenter Who ???

After viewing this little video I’m about to post…..look at his other video’s listed on YouTube…The dude is impressive….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEG_-bQd5cI&;NR=1
