Vikings trade for Jared Allen
Link from MSN for the Jared Allen trade
The Vikings will send their first round pick along with their two third rounders (#17, #73, #82) for the 2008 NFL Sack leader. The teams will also swap sixth rounders. Allen is expected to receive a six year, $74 million, including over $31 million guaranteed.
Wow, just wow. Allen is a fantastic player, but that is a LOT of compensation, both picks and dollars.

Seems like
Every contract we’ve heard about this off-season makes it harder and harder for the Cowboys to retain their players.

Wow
Agreed, Innuendo, that is a ton to give. Allen is the best pass rusher in football when he’s on the field (not wildly drunk or suspended for being high) and that D-Line is now absolutely scary, with the two Williams at DT and Allen breaking through gaps. However, they’ve totally killed their draft this year-and that’s a huge deal for any defensive player, even a superb one.
Livin' in Heartbreak Central...
Seriously
Whats the point of pushing these contract numbers up when there is a salary cap to consider?
The only reason I can think of is that the salary cap wont be around for long.

this doesn't surprise me at all
Besides a QB, dynamic pressure players are the most highly coveted players in football and the Vikings would rather pay for a proven commodity than draft an unproven rookie like Derrick Harvey.
In Romo we Trust
True
I don’t think anyone is denying Allen’s talent at a skill position, but a first + 2 thirds + 75 mill is a large investment. The Vikings are suddenly short on draft picks with a number of holes left to fill. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see them use that 2nd rounder on a QB.
Still, I love the move for the Chiefs and I still like it from the Vikings perspective. I’m pretty certain I’ll be calling for Min to win the division this season.
And with the 22nd overall selection the Dallas Cowboys select Jonathan Stewart.
Another reason this is bad...
...is because the Chiefs will likely take a CB with the 17th pick, whereas the Vikings would not have. I’m really starting to come to terms with the fact that we aren’t going to get one of the top 4 CB’s in the draft….and it’s kinda depressing. Yay Cason?
Understanding Minnesota
Since the Dennis Green days, the Vikings have build their defense through the draft… especially their Front 7.
Unfortunately for them, none of the drafted DEs (K. Udeze, E. James) turned out to be anything special from a pass rushing standpoint.
I guess they finally decided to go the non-draft route to acquire a proven sack artist and his name is Jared Allen. The thing that’s of concern here though is that Allen has now been convicted of two drunk driving violations… yet the Chiefs were still able to acquire some high draft picks from Minny regardless.

Herschel Walker anyone?
This is not quite as bad but horribly overpriced. What dpes this speak to Demarcus Ware’s contract?
Not a bad deal at all....
I think it’s safe to say Jarrad Allen would have rated higher than probably all the DE’s in this draft…...so to use two 3rd’s to move from 17th to KC’s 5 spot would have taken more than Minny’s 3rd rounders…..The contract is a bit pricey, but that’s the going rate for one of the best 4-3 DE’s in the league…...If Minney had any semblance of a legit QB…..I’d be a bit more scared than I already am….They are putting together a very good team over there…They will be a NFC contender this year for sure…
Look for KC to possibly trade down with one or both their #1’s…If their players don’t line up right…..they got like 5-6 of the top 100 players coming to them this year…...a good boost for their future…If they can line up OL Brandon Albert and Harvey or Merling….or go DE’s Gholston or Long…then OT Cris Williams at #17.,.......and save paying out 12 mil /per for Allen…they’re going in the right direction…...Look for KC to have a great draft…
A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.
Both teams did well
Vikings needed a top DE, and Allen is better than any rookie they’d get at #17
KC is in dire need of rebuilding, and so it makes sense for them to trade their marquee pass rusher for multiple picks. Just my 2 cents, but I think both teams got what they wanted. The only sticking point is if Allen messes up again, he’ll get suspended, then the Vikes will have egg on their faces. Don’t let this guy on the Party Boat.
