Cowboys deal Ayodele and Fasano to Dolphins

Wow, a little bit of a stunner. According to the DMN blog:

Dallas has traded linebacker Akin Ayodele and tight end Anthony Fasano to the Miami Dolphins for a fourth-round pick in the draft.

We knew they wanted to get rid of Akin Ayodele and Anothony Fasano was Parcells' guy. But only a 4th-rounder for both? It's almost a 3rd-rounder considering where the Dolphins pick but I didn't think we'd give up two players for the pick. Ayodele needed to be traded to thin out the ILB position.

What do you guys think?

We all knew that Ayodelle would be dealt as some point this weekend

after Zach Thomas was signed and I thought that with out depth at Tightend after Fasano with the development of Curtis and a raw but with alot of potential in Hannah, that there was a possibility that fasano could be traded, great trade for both teams..

You have to think there is something more to this trade

I can’t believe they would trade both for only a fourth rounder. However, I do like the fact that Dallas worked to get this trade done before the draft tomorrow so that they can get as much as they can out of the trade this year.

by Brandon Worley on Apr 25, 2008 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

Jerry said it

At his press conference “Now’s not the time to get good value for players” yet he does this? Obviously he either values that early 4th rounder more than we do or like Brandon says, there’s something else in the wind.

by obiru on Apr 25, 2008 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

This trade only makes sense

If it was a salary cap move. I understand getting Ayodelle out, but Fasano looked to be doing alright. I would have rather picked up a 3rd for two players though. I think Ayodele alone was worth a 4th. Throw a former Parcells’ second round pick in there and to me that equals a 3rd.

by Impatient on Apr 25, 2008 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

Not a bad deal

Think of it as a 4th round pick + cap room. Akin was a goner for sure. This leaves an opening for Zach Thomas to play, and Burnett/Carp to take over within a few years. Also gives some cap space for our 2 #1 picks to sign, or possibly to add the veteran receiver.

you guys are over valuing Akin

you weren’t getting a fourth rounder for him, you’d be lucky to get a sixth rounder for him, and Fasano wasn’t going to see alot of time here behind Witten, and with the way Curtis came on last year and the development of Hannah on the practice squad, a player the cowboys really like, fasano became expendable, I really like this trade, an early fourth round pick for these guys.

Its essentially a third round pick. . .

I think that this is beneficial in multiple ways – cap room, clean up the roster for players that are going to make impact this year and loads up the picks with trading value.

I bet we are busy tomorrow if we can get dance partners.

Good Move

We basically got rid of two mediocre players from last year who were tying up cap space, for what amounts to a late third round pick. Fasano was underwhelming with only his blocking making him better than a waiver wire tight end, and that was probably due to coaching. Adell was a blocking magnet last year.

At some point, the smart teams know when to cut their losses. Dallas at least got some value in dumping their’s.

by kindablue on Apr 25, 2008 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

Fasano could be a starter on half the teams in this league

Dallas abandonded the two tightend system for the most part, I watched this kid at Notre dame, he caught everything, ran great routes, he will be a very good player in Miami where he’ll get a chance to start

And Marcus Spears

Tore up the SEC when he was at LSU. Neither he nor Fasano have shown anything with Dallas. He was mediocre at best, in an offense that was made wide open by the others around him.

by kindablue on Apr 25, 2008 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

too many people look at sacks a way to rate a defensive end

Spears cant get sacks when he’s taken off the field on passing situatuions all the time. He’s a run stopper, thats his first and formost responsibility on first and second down, he rated just as good as canty last year stat wise. I thought Spears was solid the last six or seven games of the season, not mediocre. Sacks aren’t the end all and be all to judge defensive ends in a 3-4 seheme.

Because like most of you implied, this is like an end of the 3rd round draft pick on Sunday.

And it’ll recoup the 4th rounder dealt (to Tennessee) for Adam “Bonehead” Jones.

Except the 4th rounder from Miami is a better draft position than where we would’ve selected in the 4th round before the Jones trade.

Ferguson-swapped sixth round picks this year and Miam’s sixth rounder next year-for a 33 year old NT, good trade.

Ayodele was good as gone after Zach Thomas was signed, he’s going to be 30 years old, Fasano wasn’t going to get alot of chances behind Witten, we get the first pick in the fourth round, for a player who wasn’t going to be back anyway and a part time tightend when the team is deep at tightend—good trade.. there is always a great talent at the start of the fourth round, you might see dallas trade down with that pick also on Sunday too….

Dolphins should have thrown in a 7th round pick as well

2 guys who can start for the Dolphins for pick #100? I ‘d say they got a little bit better of Jerry. But I guess he wanted that 4th round pick for something. If it turns into another TE, then we got shafted. I guess I had a little better opinion of Fasano than some bloggers do. I thought he was a good backup to Witten. Maybe his shoulder problem is something that could become chronic. In that case, it was probably a good deal. I’m surprised Jerry traded any players right before the draft, since he seemed to think you get the minimum value in return for players right before or during the draft.

A 7th rounder won't make the team.

This Cowboys team is too deep and talented to have a couple 7th rounders make the team. Fasano’s cool, but not for Dallas. He’ll just sit on the bench joking around with Bobby Carpenter. At least both those guys get more shots at playing time.

A high 4th is nothing to sneeze at, especially in a RB/CB/OL/DL heavy draft.

by Aaron Novinger on Apr 26, 2008 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

It should've been for more

I like the trade in theory-dumping two players who weren’t going to be put in a position to produce, gaining some cap space, and replacing the lost Pacman draft pick with one in an even better position-but it seems to me that it should have been for more. I know we tend to overvalue our players, but these guys both had talent enough to start (in some formations, anyway). More importantly, they were players from Parcells’ watch, so he should have made a trade that makes it at least look like he values both players as much as he should. I, too, would have asked for a seventh in addition.

It’s interesting that Jerruh keeps misdirecting everyone who follows what he says closely, first with the “Pacman talks are not going anywhere” line and then with the “I don’t like to trade players this close to the draft, when they are devalued” bit. It makes me wonder what other things he’s going to shock us with this weekend. With this draft positioning, it should be a great draft for us, but now I’m thinking we all had better say our prayers or keep our fingers crossed!

Sit back and enjoy the return to dominance!

fasano shoulder injury

Everything I had heard and from what was being said there was supposed to be no long term problems there. It was also indicated that the problems he was having blocking and catching late in the season were mostly due to it.
I don’t know what some people are smoking but if they think Curtis is as good as Fasano its pretty strong. Now the kid has potential but there is a reason he was not drafted as high as Fasano. Up untill his shoulder injury Fasano was looking pretty good in the limited time he was getting in. And he was ahead of Witten at that stage of his career in blocking. Its a good deal for Fasano because he will be starting there.

try to think of the trade this way

The cowboys traded a backup tightend in Fasano and an aging veteran linebacker in Ayodele, who wasn’t going to be on the team anyway and was going to be traded this weekend at some point, especialy after Zach Thomas was signed, for a Pac-rat, a top ten pick with alot of talent and a difference maker on the field if he can keep his head straight,, although a complete knucklehead and a valueable first pick in the fourth round, moving up 29 spots into the top 100 in the entire draft . I like it

Ayodele was going to be cut if no trade value could be found. And Fasano might have ended up as the third tight end on the roster in 2008. I like Curtis and think he can be just as good a backup as Fasano. It was highly unlikely that either player was going to be a contributor to the Cowboys. Getting the 100th pick in the draft gives Jerry much added flexibility to wheel and deal today. Hopefully he has learned his lesson about drafting backup tight ends in the second round.

We had pick #92... and now added #100

Fasano is a solid if not special tight end. But he was expendable in Garrett’s offense. Akin was on his way out. Getting pick #100 seems like good value in a deep draft.

It gives us flexibility in terms of trades today, as well as a shot at yet another RB or CB project… you gotta like adding value without losing much (assuming Curtis is not a drop-off means we lost NOTHING but cap!)

If PacMan works out, its a great deal.
If PacMan isn’t able to play this year or gets into trouble, its a save your rear end type deal because you recoup and improve your fourth round pick.

we got two players for the price of ine in Pacman – a thug for the media on Saturday night and a stud for the fans on Sundays…

I don’t like the guy, but Jerry stole him as a pure football deal. All the incentives and punishment clauses protect the team well from repeated misdeeds, The cap hit will be small and again incentive-laden. And for a 4th rounder, you get a better corner than anyone on the FA market. And it’s not like he can screw up any more. Goodell won’t tolerate even a little problem.

yeah, you're right if he gets reinstated

and from listening to the commish, that certainly isn’t a given, and with this recent arrest in the Las Vegas incident, more than likely won’t happen.

In Romo we Trust
