End of Day One

Well, the first day of the draft is over. How do you guys feel? Happy? Relieved its over? Ready to throw Jerry from the bus?  There definitely seemed to be a wide variety of reactions to what the Cowboys did today and just goes to show that Jerry Jones will never make everyone happy.

Here's a quick recap of the day:

Round 1, #22: Felix Jones, RB Arkansas The Cowboys were faced with the unexpected decision of whether to draft Rashard Mendenhall when he fell all the way to 22. The Cowboys opted to go with the speedy Felix Jones instead.

Round 1, #25: Mike Jenkins, CB South Florida Jerry Jones traded up three spots from #28 to #25, giving up a 5th and a 7th rounder in the process, when they decided that San Diego was going to jump on cornerback Mike Jenkins.

Round 2, #61: Martellus Bennett, TE Texas A&M One day after trading former second round pick and backup tight end Anthony Fasano, the Cowboys draft the athletic and well-quoted Martellus Bennett.

I'll post my official thoughts on the draft on Monday when all is said and done. Overall, what are everyone's feelings on the first day?

My opinion would be completely different if we took Mendenhall instead of Jones. Not to mention the Martellus Bennett pick. Yikes!

Just curious.

Could you explain why you would give them an A?

Bourn to Run!

sure

they got the best RB for what their offensive system does, they got the 2nd best CB in the entire draft, and they got an immediate redzone threat and a versatile TE, who can play out wide as well.

I'll give you Jenkins.

But you don’t think Mendenhall would’ve been better than Felix and any WR over a backup Tight End?

well, at this point

there is no WR that will beat AUstin, Hurd, Stanback. Backup TE will play a lot. Mendenhall, i was never enamored with, because he had one good year at Illinois and couldn’t beat Pierre Thomas out. Saying that, he’s an every down back and Barber is close to that as well. You can’t have 50 carries a game. With Jones he’s a perfect back for what JG is trying to do and he’s also a great kick returner…

We're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

I’m not saying Bennett and Felix are bad. I just think Rashard and a WR would’ve been better.

B+

Because they filled two needs. The only way I don’t give them an A is because of the TE selection, but I guess they didn’t like any of the WRs on the board. It was known early on we would not be taken a WR early so it is no surprise we didn’t. This might be the worst WR group in years. Felix Jones is the perfect compliment to MB3.

Jones is a really good back

but Mendenhall is much better, will be a star with Pittburgh. I thought Jerry blew this one.

Jenkins has the measurables, but looks lazy a lot of times to me. Cason will be a better pro.

Bennett was a good pick, needed a dynamic TE backing up all world Witten.

I’d grade our first day B-

Deja Vu

Jackson unexpectedly fell to us. We ended up with Julius Jones.

Mendenhall unexpectedly fell to us. We picked Felix Jones.

And just like Jackson, I will continue to try and talk myself into Jones being a better fit and what not, but we all know how the first scenario worked out.

O well

It’s not like we blew next season with this draft. I just felt Mendenhall would’ve been good in so many ways.

-Backup to Barber
-Back of the Future
I just don’t see Jones as a number 1 back…ever.

Let’s just hope we have a good 2nd day. Maybe Jerry didn’t draft a WR because he’s working on a deal for a veteran. I’m hoping for a WR, FB, DT and QB tomorrow.

Tightend made no sense to me in the second round

especialy in the second round.
Jerry said himself that Felix Jones isn’t a twenty or twenty five carry back—well why would you select him in the first round!!! Barber isn’t that either, yet Mendenhall falls right into your lap, just like Steven Jackson did a feww years back, and you passed on him too. Hope you dot regret that move, AGAIN!!!

Jenkins was a great pick, he’s an elite cover corner, and he wont be pressed to come in and start right off, can learn behind Newman and Henry. Cason is more polished, but Jenkins has alot more upside.

The tightend pick in the second round makes no sense, could of filled that role later in the draft. Bennet wont be an impact player this year and is raw and more of a blocking tightend, could of and should of taken Caldwell, a speed receiver which would be a nice replacement for glenn, who no one knows if he can even contribute this year, Austin will be lucky to make this team, he’s an average receiver. Hurd is another Crayton, a third receiver.

Trade up a few spots to get ahead of Houston and draft Jonathan Stewart, thee best all around Back in the draft.

Only time will tell, but...

I really like the “wait three years” adage, but here are my immediate thoughts:

F. Jones – The comparisons w/ the Steven Jackson pass are valid. Mendenhall looks like he could be a stud. Jones is much more difficult to evaluate because of the Arkansas system. With MBIII in place, we got the guy we wanted. Time will tell, but this morning everyone was HOPING Felix Jones would be the man.

Jenkins – This was the REAL STEAL, but I’m a little disappointed how much we gave up to move up merely 3 spots late in the round. On the upside, because we have such a solid team, 7th round picks would have a tough time making the squad… and you cannot argue with getting a top CB.

Bennett – Something tells me the Cowboys had this pick in mind when they moved Fasano yesterday. Bennett seems to have great up-side, and who can argue with his frame and athleticism. This may prove to be a great pick, but of course only time will tell. The DMN blog had Bennett as the third top prospect left on the board when we picked.

Obviously, the Cowboys are happy with their current receiving corps. Hopefully Stanback proves to be a surprise, and the rest of the group is solid. Finding an addition through the draft or FA next year seems to be the preferred route, and I don’t mind this at all. I don’t expect to see us draft a WR tomorrow.

Despite all the complaints about Spears, he’s solid in run support. The NT rotation of Tank and Rat worked last year, Hatcher is pushing for time… I don’t see the pressing need here unless we were going to go after a 1st round DE stud. The same can be said for the O-Line, as we seem to be developing depth.

Pat Watkins is the X-factor. Can he be an NFL starter? Drafting a safety tomorrow seems to be our biggest need area… and I would not mind seeing us grab another CB and/or RB.

5 things I think I think

1:jones will be a better compliment to barber( note that i didnt say a better back)
2:-jenkins according to some draft experts is the 2dnd best cornerback in this draft
3:-benett fills a need position after the trade with miami and he is the 2nd best TE on the board at the time.
4:-We now have a very good secondary ( not counting pacman ) and a good kick returner as well
5: Justin king will be the 1st chouice of the 2nd day of the draft ( we can never have enough good corners and both starting corners will be 30+ this coming year)

I have been as critcal of GM Jerry as anyone here

so let me say that I like what happened today. I can quibble with Jones over Mendenhall, but nothing happened today that makes me shout “WHAT THE F&%K!!!!” which has happened in the past. GM Jerry didn’t make any moves simply to make moves. There seemed to be a plan in place, which was executed, and it seems to be a not-stupid, if not smart, plan at that.

Does any of this make sense? They were running a special on microbrews, so I was able to try a bunch of that I had never had before. More Beer = More Incoeherence

A-

We missed the boat completely on Mendenhall. I like Jones, I am very glad we have him, but passing on Mendenhall? I thought before the draft that moving up a couple spaces for the guy would be a good move. He will be a stud and could’ve been the future RB to our team. Felix will be a good change of pace back. However, I am currently starting the process of complete forgetfulness that I learned a couple years ago from some TV show broadcast from Seattle.
Jenkins was a helluva move. I really like the guy and think the guy has all the tools to become a stud. Now, in those of you guys’ defense who think we should have taken Cason, Jenkins has to improve his work ethic and stop taking plays off like. But all-in-all, I like he pick alot and can’t wait for a secondary of Newman, Pac, Henry, and Jenkins. FU west coast.
Bennett was a good pickup in the second. I’ve seen the guy play first hand and he is very athletic. He is a great red zone threat and can line up wide at times. He could make a limited impact next year.

B

OK this is BS all the shots being taken at Fasano. 2 weeks ago none of this was being said.
I have looked at Bennett hard and there is no way he is as ready to play as Fasano was coming out. So much for Jerrah’s talk.
He is slower then Fasano, and with his height he could be a good down field blocker but he will not be a good blocker in the backfield or near the line. He catches more with his body then his hands, though better coaching can change that. Bottom line is he is NOT as well regarded as Fasano was coming out. Remember Fasano also had that shoulder injury- which I happen to think was the underpinning for getting rid of him; all acounts claimed there would be no carryover but maybe Jerrah and company were worried.
Any way you really look at it we did NOT improve our backup TE position- and using a SECOND ROUND PICK there is wrong.
Got no problem with Jones, I would have taken Stewart or Mendenhall but they both have more questin marks (stewart/toe mendenhall one year wonder?).
LOVE Jenkins pick- was very surprised he fell.
Overall OK but our 3rd rd pick needs to do more then our second round.

Oh and by the way all the crap talked yesterday about curtis- obviously the BOYS THOUGHT DIFFERENT.

Underwhelmed

I’m not as pissed off at Jerry Jones this year as I have been in years passed, so I suppose that’s a good thing.

Positives: We got a RB and a CB in the first round, our two biggest needs. It wasn’t a question of whether the players would be available (just look at every mock draft), but just whether Jerry would screw it up. Jerry may not have picked the right players at those positions, but at least he didn’t get the positions screwed up.

Negatives: We spent our first pick on a running back that Jerry admitted isn’t a starter, and we wasted a second round pick at a position that we should never have needed to address. Last night’s trade was a net loss for the team.

Grade: C. Passing, yet uninspiring.

by cstorm15 on Apr 26, 2008 10:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why we took a TE

It does make sense when you consider what was out there and what our needs were. Yes we could use an upgrade at No. 2 WR. But we also needed a backup TE because of the trade.

Think about this: in the system the Cowboys use, TE’s are basically just receivers who are closer to the O-Line and sometimes block on pass plays. On run plays, Cowboys WR’s are supposed to block. More important to this idea, look at the number of targets and catches Jason Witten got last year compared to the WR’s.

Name: Receptions/Targets
Witten-96/141
TO-81/141
Crayton—50/81
Fasano-14/21

Witten was Top 3 among league TE’s in Targets and Receptions, TO Top 16 among WR’s. If you notice, Witten got as many targets as TO did, and ended up catching more.

So if you’re wondering why the Cowboys would take a TE, realize what type of TE they took. This is not a blocker only. He is an athletic freak, who would have gone higher had he been in a system that featured him more. He can at least contribute as much as Fasano did last year, right now. How many WR’s can you say would be able to come in and produce as much as Crayton did right away? More to the point, how many WR’s of those that were available at 61. The answer is not many. So they took a receiver who can replace what they lost over the offseason (2nd TE blocking and 15 catches) right now, as opposed to a WR who most likely wouldn’t be able to replace Crayton’s numbers (50 catches).

The Cowboys staff will have to develop Bennet more, but he has the chance to be a very good TE. Fortunately for him (and us), he does not have to be a very good TE right now.

Quick Note

Forte was picked in the 2nd by the Bears (44).

I think Erik Ainge should be added to your QB list. Not in the 3rd or 4th, but he might be there in the 6th. The DMN blog did a nice write-up on him a few days ago. He looks to me like a great backup, mediocre starter. Which is exactly the sort I’d like as a backup QB, not good enough to start up “Sit Romo” nonsense.

John Clayton rated us a winner.

We were #5 on his list of winners. The more I think about it, the more I like it. Our only weakness was CB, and we needed a #2 RB. I think we filled both of those beautifully. My long shot hope was that Malcolm Kelly would fall to us after his weak workouts, but instead we got 2nd TE that was just as fast as him, and way bigger. I think he could turn out to be quite a weapon. I guess Sunday we go for some depth at OL and NT.

I like the first round… I think Jones complements MB3 well, and Jenkins is a steal at 25. I don’t necessarily think Bennett is a bad player, or even a bad pick… but the thought process behind the move is puzzling to me. Fasano was developing nicely imo, even if he’s just Witten’s good but underused backup… now we are just starting the development process over again. It just seems wasteful to me, even if Bennett ends up turning into a good player.

I see it more like this...

SuperBowl vs Steelers and their great new running back. Fourth and Goal from the 2… Must score TD to win it … Bennett lines up next to flo, Witten comes in motion, MBIII leads from the split formation, but Romo fakes the toss to Felix. The defense, so obsessed with this massive lineup, fails to see Bennett crossing the opposite way… Romo makes a strange throw, Bennett falls a la Jackie Smith, the ball bounces off his stomach… but the athletic Bennett grabs it anyway and we win. Thus annexing 30 years of that bad SB memory.

Cowboys please venture away from the "norm" the Best way

If the Cowboys still need a slot receiver (which I believe we do)..... I’d like to suggest a “dark horse” candidate whose Talents are bound to be overlooked (similar to Wes Welker’s..ever heard of him ?)......That player is (drum roll please…) Danny Amendola WR from Texas Tech (Welker’s Alma Mater).... Sadly, like almost all TTU players (no matter how many bowl game Team victories) he’s bound to be overlooked because of his College….Amendola would (and will if picked) give NFL LBs and Safeties more headaches than they’ll believe…. Someone please tell Jerry Jones…..Or who knows maybe Jerry already has Amendola in his sights…..I hope so…..

Great Draft

I love the draft plain and simple. We got the RB we targeted, we got a CB who I just knew wasn’t going to be there and we got TE who can split wide and catch TD’s in the red zone.. 6’6” with a 39 inch vert. Man I love it..

We all knew how much Tony Loves to throw to the TE, let the gates comparsions begin..

I wanted a Wr in the second, but on second thought, if you draft wr in the 2nd round you are nearly pressed to what he can do. I think we really need to see what our younger guys can do 1st before we draft a WR high. I know they didn’t perform last year, but we all knew WR is the toughest position to adapt too..

I would like for us to bring in Z from Notre dame to play safety.

I understand the Mendhall and Jones, debate, but for our team Jones is a better compliment..

I say we once this all plays out we will be happy with Felix.

Won’t disagree with that but the Cowboys and all the other teams (except New England) overlooked the TTU receiver core (with Welker).....Hate to see some other Non-Cowboy team steal another “diamond in the rough” that’s all…....
