Martellus Bennett???
It sounds like alot of you don't know much about Bennett, so I thought I'd share what I know about him. Coming out of high school Bennett was one of the most sought after recruits (football and basketball) in the state. He signed with A&M to great fanfare from all my Aggie friends.
When he got to College Station, though, he was almost invisible. There were large portions of games that he was not on the field. This was partially do to the terrible coaching staff, I'm sure, but there were performance problems as well. Bennett cannot block. That might even be an understatement. A&M was a running team while he was playing, so this may have been one of the main reasons he missed playing time. In the passing game he is a threat, having posted 39 and 49 catches the last 2 years for a bad team, but he always dropped the important passes. As a Tech alum, I always loved seeing the ball thrown to Bennett at the end of our games.
As for character, he's not one of the throngs of Aggies that got arrested the last few years, but he's also a guy that nobody there liked. I've heard quotes out there saying that there wasn't one coach on the team that liked the kid. Whether that's true or not, he has a big mouth and a HUGE ego.
Lastly, he isn't nearly as fast in pads as he times. Tech has been slow at linebacker and safety since Zach Thomas left. Bennett took advantage of that for exactly 4 catches for 35 yards.
All that being said, I want to confess a few things. Being a Tech alum, I don't like A&M much, but I've always been willing to put that aside if a player is good. I was pleading with the Cowboys to move up and get Limas Sweed. The guy if a freak!!! But This pick of Bennett is confounding. He's god upside, but I don't see him in any way as a second, much less for a team with a pro bowl TE.

Aggie-Hater rears his ugly head
I knew it was just a matter of time before an Aggie-hater would comment on MBennett. To your points:
1. You are right as the coaching was terrible (Francione is an idiot) and he did not play nearly as much as he should have. The running game focus did not help either. But when he did play, he had a knack for catching balls in traffic and using his size to position himself. At times, he was unstoppable across the middle. He was actually known more for his blocking, but obviously, you did not see all the games so you would not know this;
2. Big Mouth and Ego? You must have him mixed up with someone else – he is one of the best locker room guys we had. He is a lot of fun and got along with everyone. Out of all the players, he was one of the few to sign autographs following the games and even posed with my dad for photo. Very similar personality to Big Red Bryant – a very big heart. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting such misinformation on this blog;
3. You are right about his speed as he is not a straight line speedster, but has great footwork and side to side agility developed in his basketball career – very smooth hips for a big guy too.
Again, if you want to participate in the Cowboy community, please don’t publish this sort of uninformed perspective – doesn’t help anyone.

Calling me out?
Who are you? Just because he posed for a picture with your daddy he’s a good guy?
Look at what teams had to say about him:
scouting director for an AFC team:
Quote:
His character is going to come into question — not with arrests or things like that, but just the way he is as a teammate, that kind of thing.
scouting director for an NFC team:
Quote:
Mentally and all that, Bennett’s maybe not a great worker.
Now, who should feel ashamed?

um, where are your links?
Let me state this. I am a huge Longhorn fan, and I hate the Aggies… however, I have followed Mr. Bennett since his signing as he was one of the top recruits that was linked to Ryan Perriloux(sp) who said they wanted to go to UT and then shafted us after his commitment.
Bennett is going to be a stud in the NFL. I have never heard anything bad about his character or any coaches not liking him. For you to say this without any first hand knowledge, is absurd.

SaratogaRacing - right on
I second your post, saratoga racing. No offense to altercall, but he must have Martellus mixed up with somebody else or he had never watched an Aggie game this year. As a long time Aggie follower, I followed them closely this year, and let me just say we got a total steal – a young Antonio Gates. From watching him this year, he was one of the most athletic tide-ends I’ve seen in a while. And I have no idea where you got that about his character issues, but I know for sure he was one of the leaders taking part in charity events as an Aggie. If it wasn’t for the terrible coaching, he would have easily been a first round pick. Again, do not post things that are from such a misinformed perspective – nothing personal. We have a big year ahead of us guys!

No hard feelings Altercall, but it would be nice if...
you guys would let the Aggies win a game once in awhile – best of luck to you guys this year. And, by the way, you do have the better looking women out your way too.

This year a C+, with next years picks added B+
Jones over Mendenhall was a mistake, you dont pass up a lead, everydown back for a complementory back, Jerry Jones GM double talk means, this is his pick, went against everyone in the draft room.
Jenkins was an absolute steal, he’s a top notch corner, could not believe he made it to the mid twenties.
Bennett pick was a project, you dont draft projects in the second round when you have definite needs you could of filled.
Projects are for fourth roundsor later.
Choice is a pick dallas wouldn’t have needed to make this early if Mendenhall was selected in the first round, another complementory back who could start in a pinch, this pick clearly indicates Jones isn’t a lead back.
Scandrick could be a steal of this draft for the cowboys, a player rated late second to early third, you trade down numerous times stockpiling picks this year and next year, trade up a few giving up your seventh round picks to get him, great value pick…
Walden is a outside linebacker/DE, a reach, probably could of gotten as a UFA player, dont be surprised to see this kid converted to a fullback, ala Hoyte. tweener type player..
The trades for picks next year while moving down and still getting good value players for the most part and really setting up next years draft is a big plus, the cowboys will be bigtime players next year in the draft, I can see dallas moving up next year early for a change in the draft with the picks they aquired.
A few needs this team still needs, field stretching speed receiver, Nose tackle, Fullback, Guard/center and a backup young Qb to groom.
A solid C+, but if you add the picks for next year B+

I may have overstated
But there are issues with him. I know when he came out of HS there were questions about attitude. I also know that he was always talking trash when we played ya’ll. If I remember right, a couple of times he tried to get into the face of a couple of our guys.
What I should have said is that there are rumors about his not getting along with the coaching staff. That seems to be validated by the fact that they were so slow to answer questions on Bennett.
I’ll I’m saying is that there are questions about his character, not that he’s a criminal. There are alot of guys that got arrested for stupid stuff, and it at least says something that he wasn’t one of them. I can’t say anything personally about him because I don’t know him, but I can say what I’ve seen and heard, just like with any other player. If that’s old info and he’s grown out of it, great!
My point, anyway, was that it was too early to take a guy who wasn’t on the field oalot of the time, at a position we don’t need help at. Heck, that was the reason I thought we should take Mendenhall over Jones.

I think the anti-maroon glasses
messed up you vision or you just got some bad info.
While I am disappointed in the effective Fasano and a 2nd for Bennett and a 4th exchange, I’ll at least be honest with this assessment.
You might be turned off by his outgoing and confident flair, but Bennett is a first-rate individual.
He was on the field for the majority of his college career.
Whether scheme or not, he didn’t get separation consistently despite his athleticism. But, he was an exceptional receiver in traffic…that is after his freshman year.
Not sure of his stamina, as he seemed to be worn out between plays (ala Earl Campbell), but he was at full speed when the ball was snapped.
So now you know.
Carry on

Limas Sweed will be a bust altercall
The selection of the best TE in this draft class was a great pick considering we traded away Fasano. We have more depth at WR than any position on the team and I didn’t see any big time WRs in this class.

Martellus
woulda have been an household name and 1st round pick in the draft if he woulda gone to texas. his coaches were terrible, they stunted his development and what he has accomplished is in spite of anything A&M ever did regarding him.
Him and Ryan Perriloux are prime examples of what happens when you let emotion get in the way or logical reasoning on deciding a college. i hope they enjoy the 3 year old mercedes they both have b/c they have cost themselves 10’s of millions of dollars.
.500 or bust!
