Grade the Cowboys Draft...

Ok Cowboy fans.  The Cowboys draft appears to be complete.  Of course two first round picks always helps a draft look pretty good, but were you disappointed with the selections?  Did the Cowboys do a great job of adding picks for 2009 and potentially ammunition for a veteran WR trade?  Should we have addressed FB, WR, DT, Safety depth, and/or backup QB on day #2?

With that said, what kind of a grade would you give Jerry & Co.?

I like the 2009 picks, but...

I think Jerry tries to get too cute on day #2 instead of addressing some positions that may need to be addressed with depth that is available on the second day of the draft.

I completely agree.

Jerry always tries to get too cute and it drives me nuts. I’d much rather target a solid player or two and grab them and even trade up for them if necessary rather than trade back multiple times (going quanitity over quality) for back end roster fodder or guys who won’t even make the team.

Granted, I like having the 3 and 4 next year but it just kinda bugs me some times. And I just have this feeling that come 3rd and 4th rd next year Jerry will trade back again, and again, and again

agree on NT, but not safety

Safety was not a need. Jerry said so himself. They are happy with Watkins and Brown.

I'm worried about SS

both Brown and Watkins are FS. I think Jerry is putting too much of his faith in Roy.

you have to think this way

There is no such thing as a SS anymore. Roy Williams is a dinosaur SS in today’s NFL. Today’s safeties need to be fast and have cover skills. Gone are the days of the big SS. You really need two CB’s back there to play safety the way offenses are set up. Roy’s position is obsolete now

by Boyzfan94 on Apr 27, 2008 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Boyz.....We need 2 solid FS......

You don’t need to be 6’2” 225lbs to play SS anymore….just a sure tackler and a more than adaquate cover guy….Scandrick or Jenkins, or even Adam Jones will be our FS of the future….

sign Hamlin long term and cut Roy after this season….we’re goooooood to go…woohooo….feels good to have our secondary as a “strength” finally…..

Solid draft

Got a good RB who will do explosive things.

Got a talented corner who’s going to be our 4th corner.. amazing…

Got an athletic tight end to replace Fasano.

Got a 3rd string rb to fill the position who’s also very talented.

Got another corner to help our special teams and long-term project if we lose one of Henry/Newman.

Added another outside linebacker.

We didn’t need a WR, Hurd/Austin/Stanback are on our roster and aren’t getting cut, so a WR wasn’t happening. Our two first round picks were great, the rest were adding depth and filling needs. Solid.

I am pretty happy with our first day picks

and am not opposed to Choice, but I don’t like all the stupid trading Jerry did today. I am okay with the picks we got for next year, but it really seems that we ignored some needs (S, ILB, NT.) I give it a B- or C+.

A-

I liked the draft in general.

Would have loved Manningham in the 3rd or a QB in the 6th, but I can understand where the Cowboys were coming from.

There really wasnt a good fit at WR for the Boys in this draft.

the 5th and 6th rd picks should be stud ST guys, which we need with the loss of Davis and others.

Perhaps we can snag some good unsigned rookie FAs in the next day or so.

B+ too

Looking back, if you had told me we would get Jenkins and Felix, I would have been thrilled. I also think MBen will be a pleasant surprise and I think Choice is a solid pick. He is dependable and could step in for MBIII, if , god forbid, anything happened to him. And I loved the fact that we now have a 2 (3s) and 2 (4s) next year – that could come in handy. I would have liked to have gotten a NT and maybe Hellis/Schmitt, and that would have made it an A. Good one, JJ, as I know you guys read this stuff.

Not sure if you guys heard Gil Brandt last week on Sirus Radio, but he was saying that JJ is very pleased with Stanback’s progress this offseason and that he really feels like he will step up this year….hmmmm, maybe this is one of the reasons why we did not take a Wideout.

Final Tally

After this draft, what is the final result for 2009? What picks did we get and what did we give up?

by Jack Nicholson 1974 on Apr 27, 2008 3:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Solid B, maybe B+...

The team had 3 needs, and Jerry filled two of them with very quality players…

Say what you want about taking Jones over Mendenhall, but we all know Felix is the ideal skill set for complementing Barber. Mendenhall is essentially the same RB Barber is, with a bit more speed. Jones was the guy the Boys had targeted all along, and they got their man…

Mike Jenkins was a strong value pick at 25… Another guy Dallas had targeted, and they got their man. The #2 DB on their draft board according to most sources, so getting him at 25 is a great pick…

I like the Martellus Bennett pick a lot more than others. He’s big, strong, physical, and an explosive athlete. The Antonio Gates comparison is a solid one, IMO… He’s an above average blocker with the ability to improve greatly in that aspect of his game… He’s raw, but he’s got every physical tool to be a very good NFL TE, and he just needs some quality coaching to refine his game. Anyone ever think we abandoned the 2-TE sets because Fasano just wasn’t very good? I’d be shocked if the 2-TE sets didn’t show up more in the red zone this year, because Bennett is going to be a real weapon in short-yardage situations.

Tashard Choice is a nice insurance policy in case of injury or failing to re-sign Barber. He’s a tough, physical runner, and it’s nice to have 3 RBs that have talent and potential to contribute to the team, rather than carrying Tyson Thompson from week to week…

Orlando Scandrick seems like an upside pick, though I don’t know a ton about him. The measureables look good, though. Can’t be any worse than throwing Jacque Reeves or Nate Jones out there as our 4th or 5th CB…

Looks like the Special Teams also got a real shot in the arm… Every single guy we drafted seems like they could find a spot on one of the special teams units and excel… Jones and Jenkins are both very quality return men…

Not real worried about failing to add a WR through the draft. Jerry and Wade made it clear they didn’t feel like a guy they drafted in Round 1 could come in and contribute this year, and nobody they drafted in the mid/late rounds would have come in and beat out Owens/Glenn/Crayton/Stanback. Austin and Hurd should be fine for now, and if Jerry can find another guy at June 1st cuts, great. I felt all along like if they couldn’t land someone through trade, they could wait another year on drafting a WR, anyways.

by N41D on Apr 27, 2008 4:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agree.

Tap the breaks a little on Bennet. He will be good, but he needs time. I’m not sure he has the speed to be the threat that Gates/Clark are. Still, he will be better than Fasano by midseason.

by GhettoBear04 on Apr 27, 2008 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like Jerry said There was no reason to reach on a WR

it’s that simple. We needed speed and most of these WRs didn’t have it. Why waste a high pick on a player that will make no impact on this team. Jerry said he was looking for potential starters this draft. I agree, I didn’t like any of these WR’s coming out for what we needed. I’m glad we didn’t reach on any of them.

as much as i liked watching some of the WR’s succeed in college, i didnt think any of them were 1st round picks, i think we’ve all come to know what a 1st round WR looks like and Limas Sweed and all the rest werent that level. Those are the type of guys you just dont bother with. its also the type of guy the redskins aways draft every year and then become disappointed when they suck.

I give it a B- on the selections

but an A+ in strategy. Loved the way Jones had only 3 picks on day 2 and turned them into 6 picks including 2 for next year, that was brilliant.

Regarding the picks, I still don’t understand how you don’t take Mendenhall over Jones. I’m not understanding the argument that he fits our offense better because Mendenhall can do everything Jones can and plus he’s just a better back all around including blocking.

Jenkins has obvious talent, I just hope he can keep his nose clean, I fear if he and Pacman become buddies, that could spell trouble.

I liked the remaining picks, great value at where we selected those guys.

I'm going to withhold judgment until after the '08 season

but I see their point. With Mendenhall our playbook would be smaller, and he never performed well in the backup role at Illinois. With Felix Jones you know you have a guy who can be outstanding in that role (9 ypc), whereas with Mendenhall you are taking a risk.

by quincyyyyy on Apr 27, 2008 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good analysis

I don’t agree that Mendenhall can do everything Jones can, but I do recognize the danger in intentionally drafting a guy you know won’t start in the first round.

The whole club will have to make sure that everyone keeps their noses clean, but there has been a very significant talent infusion in this club in the past two days. I think Dallas is definitely going to be improved next year, and that’s no small feat in the NFL for a team that had such a good year.

Where are the lower grade options in the poll?

Well, we obviously cannot pass judgment on the players for a few years, but as far as the philosophy goes, I’d give the draft a D+ based on the following points:

· Drafting a running back in the first round is a complete waste, and it sounds like the Cowboys will compound the error by signing Barber to a long-term, big $$$ contract. This is a passing team, in a passing league, and the running game simply needs to be competent, not great. If history repeats it self, (as it almost always does) there will be several running backs picked in rounds 3-6 that will be every bit as good as Felix Jones.

· Corner at 25 was a great pick. The first few rounds are where you find good corners.

· Second round: aaarough. How many times do we need to pick a backup tight end early in the draft? I am so disappointed in this pick. I’m a huge Jerry Jones fan, but how he did not learn his lesson on the Fasano debacle is beyond me. Here again, history is repeating itself. Even if the guy we picked is very, very good, he is still going to sit on the bench behind our stud Witten. Yuk.

· I like the fact that we have ammo for next year. Over the next two years, quite a bit of our depth will be leaving via free agency and we need draft picks to restock – and we don’t need them this year because our team is loaded from Jerry’s great drafts of the last four or so years.

· I wish we had picked up at least one offensive line project.

Now, it’s JJ time where he moves into sales mode and signs a bunch of undrafted free agents. Go Jerry Go.

Louie, completely disagree with your TE analysis

If Bennett is the real deal, we run enough 2 TE sets that he would see the field plenty. I’m all for giving Romo as many weapons as possible and since the WR class this year was putrid, TE was a great call.

by Terry on Apr 27, 2008 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

2 TE's

Just for the record, I wasn’t advocating for a WR pick instead of a TE in the second round.

I hate the two TE formation. It is mostly a running formation, and I would much rather have the Cowboys line up with three wideouts. The strength of the offense is Tony Romo and the downfield passing game, and I don’t think this pick helps that, and it has the potential to make our offense more conservative.

The base offense of Dallas has one starting TE. Assuming that doesn’t change, unless Bennett beats out Jason Witten we have drafted a guy who will be a backup tight end for the next four years. You really cannot spin it any other way: we have drafted a guy who will be a backup tight end for the next four years. In my opinion, that is a very poor use of a second round draft choice. It is Fasano all over again.

by Cowboy Louie on Apr 27, 2008 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it doesn't matter if you hate the formation

because the Cowboys run it a lot so unless the Cowboys fire Garrett and hire you as OC, our “backup” TE will see a lot of action especially if he’s good.

BTW, utilizing 2 TEs isn’t conservative at all since the Colts use 2 TEs in their passing game quite a bit.

exactly.....Indy is the prime example of utilizing two fine athletic TE's....

Fasano was never going to be Mark Bavaro….sorry Tuna Pudge….injuries and no progression was his doom….sorry…Crayton, Hurd, or Austin don’t scare anybody…TO double teamed, and the inassurance of Glenn making it back to his old form are very concerning….

I’d rather have 2 wide outs and two TE’s to give us more pass protect, more options on play action, more power blockers on running downs…...Until we get someone opposite TO that will actually require a defenses attention…I’m more than happy to have a “6th blocker” for Romo to find TO, Witten, and Crayton….If none get open…now you have a “perfect” dump off option in Bennett,,......The dude is 6’6” with a 39” verticle for pete’s sake…Tony can just chuck it up for grabs and he’ll come down with it…

Love your optimism

Terry, I love your optimism, I really do. But no matter how much you try and spin this one, you can’t run away from the fact that the Cowboys drafted a backup tight end with a 2nd round pick. Barring an injury to Witten, he will not be a starter in our base offense for the entire length of his rookie contract. Second round picks should be groomed to be starters, not backups. Yes, he will get some snaps and hopefully he will deliver production. But he will always be the third, fourth or fifth option on offense when he is in the game. You can get those guys in the later rounds, and we may even have one already on our roster in Curtis.

Conceptually, this pick is no different from Fasano. It was the wrong philosopy then and it is the wrong one now. Hopefully Bennett will be a substantial upgrade over Fasano.

by Cowboy Louie on Apr 28, 2008 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but what if there wasn't a player

on the Cowboys board who they envisioned as an eventual starter and couldn’t find a trading partner to move down?

I disagree that all second round picks have to be starters and even 1st rd picks for that matter. Look at Felix Jones, he’ll never be a starter so long as MB3 is here, but we need his big play ability and to help share carries with MB3.

Same thing applies to Bennett, while he’ll never “start” over Witten, he could develop into a very nice receving threat and be on the field a lot with Witten. The more offensive weapons for Romo, the better I say.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Apr 28, 2008 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is sound as a general rule

It’s hard to disagree that you generally shouldn’t use 1st and 2nd round picks on guys you know will not start, so I get that criticism. I have enough faith in the offensive brain-trust around the Cowboys to trust in these two picks (Jones and Bennett) because I can see what guys of their skill-set might be able to do for our offense. Jerry wanted both guys badly and I think Garrett is quite pleased with the acquisitions.

In short, I hear what you’re saying, but sometimes there are other ways to do things than what conventional wisdom says. Bennett potentially gives our offense a new dimension and a strong red-zone threat, and I don’t think the same could be said for other players available at that point in the draft. This team stalled out in the red zone some, so the idea of a guy with huge hands who is taller than and can jump higher than anyone else on the field is pretty enticing.

by grapejoos on Apr 28, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I second that grapejoos......People have to realize....We aren't a normal Offense...

I’d much rather we start with a 2 TE 2 WR set…...AND play MBIII & Felix Jones in the backfield together for most of the game (alas Hershel Walker & Tony Dorsett) very similiar situation….......we don’t even need a FB…as far as I’m concerned….that’s just wasted talent on the sidelines….I consider Witten as lethal as any slot or 2nd WR around…..I consider Felix Jones more lethal than any WR we could’ve drafted…..(some people don’t realize Jones lined up and even started a few games outside at WR on several occasions for Arkansas)......

With the 2 TE sets…..you got out wide on RB,TE,WR screen plays…you got MBIII running up the gut…..MBIII doesn’t need a FB to open up holes for him….WE got 3 pro bowl, and overall premier lineman for that., and MBIII can lead block for Jones if needed up the middle….....OR we put a TE and motion to blow up a hole and be a lead blocker as well…. ......we still got TO slantin’ across the middle, or going post corner….Maybe even Glenn goin’ yard down the sideline….THEN….If we ever have a 3rd and long (which I doubt we’ll see much of unless Flo false starts)....THEN we bring in Crayton…..or Stanback…..I hope that made sense…..but having 2 quality TE’s does so much more for your offense (Fasano was not impressive while here, hence….we gave him da boot)....in the running game, AND even more so in your passing game…..It keeps teams like the Eagles and Giants out of their blitz nickle packages….cuz they must respect the run more….NOW you have LB’s and Safeties covering Witten, Bennett, and Jones out of the backfield…..or you keep one of the TE’s in and Barber to chip block and have 5- 10 seconds for wide open routes to develope for TO….while Felix Jones is squirming around near the line to take a dump off pass 67 yards to da house…..woooo hoooooo…...How bout dem Cowboys…..lol….sorry..gettin’ gaa gaa just thinking about it….

You’ll see how all this plays out…..This offense is going to be more prolific than any other team in the league…I have no doubts…..

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

Good point re: blitzes

I’m not saying Bennett or Felix are the best blockers in the world, but if we go in a 2 TE package with those guys on the field, opposing LBs are going to have their work cut out for them. Who do you cover? LBs have a hard enough time covering Witten and MB3; will they be able to cover Jones and Bennett too?

This offense is going to require some serious studying by Romo and the gang and is going to take some practice to execute properly, but we now have players that cause huge matchup problems all over the field. It may not be the most conventional scheme in the world, but I am really looking forward to seeing that Red Ball and Romo can do with these new toys.

I like this Jay character.....refreshing to see new blood on the blog.....

certainly agree with much your saying…...keep it up….and welcome

You have to realize…I think Jerry knew he needed Parcells to right the ship…..so he caved on several selections I’m sure Jerry was not on board with…..once the ship was churnin’ at about 50 knotts…....he pretty much cut the anchor rope….and got back to wheelin and dealin for quality selections…..that more than likely Tuna woul’ve went along with…...I appreciate everything Parcells did to reform this franchise…but Tuna throughout his career has been given too much credit for his drafting…when in fact..it’s his free agent signings that have actually turned things around for him everywhere he’s been…..He made some nice moves and took right picks early on in this years draft because they fell to him….........but it’s hard to screw up when your picking #1….just like with the Giants, NE, and early picks with the Jets…......I may not agree with many of the late moves Jerry made this weekend…..But Im also realistic that our #167th pick would have had a tough time even making the squad…...NOW thanks to Jerry…we have 2 3rd rounder, 2 4th rounders and 2 6th rounders for next years draft…..and that’s not even counting the compensary picks we should get…..Cheers to Jerry…We walked away with our #2, #3, #4 CB our #2 & #3 RB and our #2 TE plus all those picks next year….....not bad at all.

The "Experts" liked our draft.

We’re getting top 5 or 6 ratings from most of the draft reviews that I am seeing. I have to agree, since our biggest weaknesses, RB and CB, are now strengths. If we can’t get Barber signed, Choice and Jones is a great thunder and lightning, and if we do, we have great depth. Our special teams (another weakness) and team speed were dramatically improved, and I am excited about the possibilities with Bennett.

by Baked Potato Soup on Apr 27, 2008 8:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I gave us a B+ based on the Mendenhall pass and the Bennett pick

Let me start with the positives, because if you give me the RB and the CBs we ended up with last week, I would take it laughing. F. Jones is a great addition. Jenkins + Pacman instantly makes our secondary one of the best in the league. When’s the last time you could say that??? I also don’t agree that we had needs at NT or WR. Though I would like to have seen us take a safety at some point, but we’re only talking depth here. In all, I really like the fact that we picked up THREE CBs and TWO RBs this week…. turning our two weakest positions into team strengths.

Now for my reasons the draft is not an A+....

Mendenhall would have been a coup. And I don’t buy their argument regarding Jones being the more complimentary back. If we wanted to add a speed/ 3rd down back, we could have done that with our second round pick – there were still many quality speedy RBs on the board… passing on Mendenhall is simply unforgivable.

Bennett MIGHT be a stud, but I don’t see any guarantees that he will be any better than Fasano. And we basically traded up TWO ROUNDS … PLUS GAVE AWAY AKIN… to make the change. Sorry, justifying this seems like lipstick on a pig.

Finally, and to finish on the positive, the trade today not only added two picks to next year’s draft (AND THAT IS HUGE), but allowed us to grab some EXCELLENT small school prospects, in addition to a quality #3 RB. The UDFA pick-up of Marcus Dixon also looks promising. While we didn’t address the SS depth, every other position on this team is looking very solid, from the starters on down.

Tar Heels football will surprise this year

B

At first announcement of Bennett at 61 I was upset, but I am starting to warm up to it. Garrett will get he and Witten on the field and that should be tough to defend. Lot’s of trades where I felt we could have landed some good late round talent, but depending on what happens in the ‘09 draft my grade could change.

Every pick they made

Was a smart selection. Jones is the best fit for this team, and I’m not in the camp of those who credit the selection to JJ’s Arkansas homerism; his vaunted ‘wow’ factor could have been much more pronounced with Mendenhall, but he passed him up in favor of what he and the staff obviously thought was the best pick at the time. That pleases me.
I love, love, love Jenkins at 25. Still can’t believe he was there, and while I lie Cason and Flowers he’s in a different tier of prospects, and that upgrade is more than worth those two selections.
Bennet’s not a guy that I thought was especially necessary, but the scouting staff fell in love with his abilities and were delighted to see him drop to 61. Let me say this as one who was rooting for a DaJuan Morgan selection the whole time; I like the Bennett pick now. This kid is athletic almost beyond belief for a TE. To put it most simply, he’s also a very capable basketball player. And what I love most about it is his willingness to do the dirty work. He’s reportedly a fearsome blocker who gets in the trenches not only willingly, but eagerly. Bennett could have helped us enormously throughout last year, and most significantly against the Giants in the playoffs.
To me, the Choice pick was a little depressing. I look at that guy’s scouting report and see a poor man’s MB3 (keeping in mind that MB3 was himself perceived to be a poor man’s MB3 as a fourth round draft pick in ‘05) which signals the departure of the Barbarian. The team tried to offer Barber a reasonable contract, and now that he has declined they are preparing for contingency plans. I like Choice the player, but the pick was not necessarily a need at that point unless one subscribes to the theory that MB3 will be wearing a different jersey.
Scandrick was a third-round talent who slipped to the fifth. Good bargain, and yet another terrific special teamer. This seems to have been a recurring theme throughout both days; Jerry is trying to build a killer ST squad for every situation. Scandrick blocked seven kicks in college, and will surely be an edge rusher on punts and field goals.
One other thing gave me hope for the future; Jerry continued to wheel and deal and wasn’t compelled to make any knee-jerk moves. He was enthralled by Bennett, but allowed him to fall into his lap. He had to be salivating when Jeff Otah dropped, but let the situation play out and ended up with two studs. He dealt current picks for greater value down the road, and It’s impossible to find fault with that logic. (straight up fourth for an ‘09 3rd? I’ll do one every chance I can.) And instead of going with the talented receivers when they dropped, he grabbed the talented cornerback who contribute right off the bat and let other teams roll the dice on a 50-50 proposition.
All in all, an A-. Terrific draft.

Agreed

Jerry also maneuvered the first round quite well. He knew Felix would go to Tennessee if Dallas didn’t pick him, and likewise with Jenkins and Houston. He did exactly what he needed to get both guys and it didn’t cost much to do it. Very well done. Making other GMs sad doesn’t guarantee success, but it’s better than getting laughed at.

A-

may be an optimistic kind of chap – yep and this really rattles my cage!

We were picking at the bottom of the draft – we ain’t going to get anybody who we could expect to start right away down there unless we are fortunate!

Man – look at our roster – apart from Roy Williams I think our starters are pretty much set and anyone coming in is going to have to fight to stay on the team never mind start!

And judging by what I have read so far we did pretty darn good with our last 4 picks!

And guess what – we looked to next year with extra picks to give us flexibility to deal, we will need it, because there are some guys on our roster who will not be returning when they ask for more money, particularly after we have won the Superbowl and they have a ring on their pinky!

Am I right or am I wrong?
