Dallas Cowboys sign Texas Tech WR Danny Amendola
A lot of you were up in arms over the fact that Jerry and Co. did not draft a WR. Well, they did the next best thing through college free agency by signing Danny Amendola. Amendola is touted as the next Wes Welker and is a guy who was outstanding in Texas Tech's passing offense. He excels in the slot and and loves the quick slant over the middle.
Danny Amendola scouting report.

Danny A.
My son played high school ball with Danny and he is the real thing – hard worker, loves football, his attitude reminds me of Romo’s. He will always give 110%, not complain, and do what he needs to do to make the team better. He will be fun to watch.

and why any fan would be up in arms
in not drafting a WR is a complete mystery to me as there isn’t one receiver in this draft who could come in and make any contributions to this offense. Fact is we are loaded at WR in terms of talent, youth and experience.
This Amendola kid will be very hard pressed to make the team as a result, even if he’s the next Wes Welker.

+1
I don’t care about not drafting one because of how crappy the talent was at the position was this year, not because I’m comfortable going into next season with what we’ve got…
Not one guy in this class strikes me as a real difference maker… Odds are there will be at least one guy that rises to the top, but nobody I’d be confident with…

what a tough little playmaker
after watching this highlight clip, it might be one of those cases where his game speed is different from timed speed.
he seems to have a nose for the end zone.
love how da King is finally starting to get players in here who could compete as punt & kickoff returners.
thanks for sharing this with us, quincyyyyy…

According to Hashmarks
we also just signed DE Marcus Dixon out of Hampton. Anyone know much about this guy? Apparently he’s got some dreaded “character concerns.”

As long as T.O. is healthy
we don’t need another wide receiver. But since he’s 35, we are taking a gamble, in my opinion, and if he goes down, there’s no impact receiver on the roster to replace him. There were several big-school, big-time wide receivers in this draft that will flourish in the NFL. Amendola is a nice receiver, but he’s not a substitute for T.O.

he's not supposed to be a substitue for T.O.
He’s a slot reciever and hes solid. I watched every game he played for the last 4 years. The guy is legit. He’s tough, runs great routes, can break tackles, and can field punts as well. He’s quick but he’s not a burner. He is a solid slot guy thats not afraid to go over the middle, and he catches everything.
Oh and pretty sure I brought his name up in a previous thread when someone was hoping for the next Wes Welker. This is a great signing. I really hope he makes the team.

Who ever said he's supposed a be a replacement for TO?
He makes the team if he replaces Miles Austin or someone like that. If not, he’s cut or on the practice squad.

Good pick up
Good depth for the future at least, if not this year. This guy’s got far better hands than say, Will Franklin from Mizzou who went in the fourth.

can someone help me out with the WR depth chart. I dont know if I have all the letters right, but I’ll give it a shot
X – T.O, Hurd
Y- Glenn, Crayton, Austin
Slot-Crayton, Amendola
and I’ll through in TEs for good measure
TE- Witten, Touchdown Tony, Tellus
Am I missing anyone here?

I love Austin's speed and playmaking abilities...
... he just needs to stop dropping passes.
The two he dropped in the final regular season game against Washington would’ve gone for big gainers—with one of them a sure TD.
As down on him as I was after that game, I still believe that he can be a contributor. He is very, very fast.
He’s gonna be the one I’m really pullin’ for in Training Camp and the Preseason.
Would love to see him break out in the ‘08-09 season.

Take it from a Red Raider, he's not Wes Welker!
Everyone at Tech thought he would be the next Welker, but he’s not. The moment he stepped on campus he was treated like the second coming of Wes, but he’s just not as explosive. Don’t get me wrong, he was a good receiver and a decent returner for us, but Wes has that heart that nobody is ever going to hold him down. Danny, not so much. I hope he shows something and makes the team, but I would temper the enthusiasm a little.

That's more about Wes than Danny!
Danny is a good little receiver, I can’t call him great because we’re talking about Wes. Wes just had that something extra. Danny works his butt off and does things noone expects him to. Danny could break the occasional underneath route, but with Wes, you expected him to score every time he touched the ball. Maybe it was because the Big XII teams had just had 4 years of Wes before, but it seemed like Danny never was able to really explode and dance for the yards to quite the extend Wes was.
The things that strikes me the most was the punt returns. Look through the video posted above at how many times the last man caught Danny. Was it bad luck? The coverage unit being ready for him to break it? I don’t know, but Wes was always able to get past that guy. That’s thing one thing that was frustrating about Danny, he had some great plays, but so many of them just barely missed going the distance.

Well Danny vs Wes has never been fair
Wes was and is truly special and everyone watching could see it from the day he stepped on campus. Danny was never quite like Wes, but he does a pretty good impersonation. He can make this team if route running and hands have anything to do with it.
Danny’s not an NFL punt returner, but as a slot receiver I see no reason why he couldn’t make it. He’s quick, has great hands, great balance and has been highly trained to read the D and find the opening over the middle just like Wes has. Plus he’s clutch. Very clutch.
If Amendola gets a real shot then he’ll stick in the NFL in my opinion. He’s no Wes Welker, but I’m excited that the Boys got him.

I love Danny Amendola.
He is absolutely no Wes Welker, but that should hardly surprise anyone here. He has extremely good hands and cares more than anyone else on the field at any given moment. The guy is like Wes Welker in an important regard, notably that he has not nor will not quit on football. The guy will try hard enough to make a roster (even if it isn’t this one), of that I’m fairly certain.
He’s a Wes Welker lite. A very good signing for the Cowboys and, although I’ll be rooting against your team week after week, I’ll find myself cheering for Danny if he ever sees field. I can’t root against my Red Raiders.
