Another Free Agent
NFLDraftbible.com is disclosing that the Cowboys have signed a SS in Dowayne Davis of Syracuse.
DRAFT BIBLE SLEEPER: DOWAYNE DAVIS
One of the prospects flying under the radar is Syracuse safety/cornerbacks Dowayne Davis. After starting at strong safety for two seasons, the 6’0, 200-pound Davis excelled as a senior-- making the transition to cornerback and showing vast improvement in his man coverage. He displayed outstanding athleticism and good instincts, not to mention he can also lay the lumber (see insert). A scouting combine snuff, Davis looks to impress scouts at his pro day workout in March where the former track standout is expected to run in the low 4.4-range. With The Orangemen producing such talents as Tanard Jackson (Buccaneers) and Anthony Smith (Steelers) in recent years, look for Davis to garner some attention. A native of Jamaica, he was also an academic achiever in the classroom.

On the Fox Sports.com All-Sleeper Team:
SS, Dowayne Davis, SyracuseStrengths: Davis is a tough, versatile defensive back with great athleticism. He shows good awareness in the secondary and takes good angles in coverage. He plays with a great degree of suddenness and defends the run very well. He has good recovery speed and has playmaking ability. He’s a hard hitter who plays sideline-to-sideline. He’s a standout on special teams.
Weaknesses: He tends to lack focus and will over-pursue in coverage. He’s a tweener who doesn’t have a definitive position.
Overview: Davis started his career at Syracuse as a cornerback, but was quickly moved to safety prior to the 2005 season. He participated in all 12 games as a freshman, but overall didn’t see much playing time. As a sophomore, he started every game at safety and had his best season, as he recorded 78 tackles, three for a loss, two interceptions and a sack. Davis continued his solid play into his junior season, but didn’t show the same playmaking ability he had the year prior. He finished the 2006 season with 70 tackles. This past season, Davis, who totaled 61 tackles, showed his versatility and played safety and cornerback, but still lacked the playmaking ability he displayed earlier in his career. He was invited to the Texas vs. Nation game and showed tremendous athleticism all week long at practice, but struggled in coverage. At Syracuse’s Pro Day, the 6-foot, 202-pound Davis stood out to scouts as he ran a 4.46 in the 40 and showcased a 34-inch vertical and a 9’11” broad jump. Davis also put up 225 pounds 21 times.

but struggled in coverage
but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. but struggled in coverage. Sorry but that’s all I could read from that. I can’t imagine why we’d want another SS who struggles in coverage. He’s a Cowboy though, so I’ll be cheering for him to do well.

sorry sublim......but your wrong on that...maybe you should read it again....

That was a POST season all star game…in which he didn’t practice for weeks before heading out there….way too much put into a post season all star game….It’s like saying Romo sucks cuz he threw a few picks at the Pro Bowl….
If that’s all you got from that scouting report…your no doubt reading between the lines…..
I thought the guy sounded promising..and those workout numbers were excellent….

He did play corner so he's gotta have some coverage skills.
That #38 sure can hit!

Sounds interesting
If they would have left him at safety, maybe he gets drafted. These kids that are switched around season to season don’t get the chance to develop. But he sounds like he adapted about as well as any prospect I’ve heard about in similar situations.

If this kid can really play, I have the confidence that Campo could turn him into a solid backup. Until then, he can definitely be a strong member of punt and kick coverage teams, which Dallas is sorely in need of after Miami took all of those players off of Dallas’ hands.

Love the fact...
... that they’re emphasizing speed and versatility with these UDFAs and late-round draft picks.
Again, like I commented on Marcus Dixon’s weaknesses, it appears to be something that could be improved with good coaching.
