Roster Improvement

While I'm quite sure that we are not done "churning" the roster, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look at most of the players we entered the 2007 Training Camp with, comparitive to what our 2008 Training Camp Roster might look like.  As you can see, not much change.  Jerry has done an incredible job of keeping most of the crucial players from last year's 13-3 squad.  I see remarkable improvement at RB and CB in 2008.   Obviously injuries can and will play a significant factor in our depth at certain positions, but I think Cowboy fans should feel very good about what Jerry has done thus far.

Very interesting to see

you forgot Mike Jefferson, WR and Rodney Hannah, TE are both still with the team.

I believe.

The CB upgrade is awesome

If Zach Thomas can still play at ProBowl level, then LB’s are a big upgrade.

Of course, the RB’s are better. Felix & Choice >>> JuJo & TT

Upgrayyedds aside

The level of retention is just phenomenal. This team didn’t need much in the short term. Now it seems like they need nothing more than for pac man to see the field and for Zach Thomas to be good.

That’s a pretty acceptable “risk” level heading into 08!

Anyone who references Idiocracy is correct

Hilarious movie. I agree, by the way. This team is already better on paper and will likely be better on the field. Our young stars should be better. Spencer will be ready to contribute. Stanback might be ready to show us something. Roy couldn’t be worse, and we have legitimate options if we want to yank him out of the lineup. Jenkins will probably be better than Reeves/N. Jones as a rookie, and Pacman is a potential huge upgrade. That’s before I even get to Felix and the potential of Bennett. Is it training camp yet?

improvements

right on. I’ve made a couple comments along a similar line, just looking at those positions that were upgraded, and, sorry to promote a competing (?) blog, but at theboysblog they had a good rundown on this too, yesterday.

bottom line, we are 1) very stable, and 2) the few changes have all been improvements.

Considering that we were a top 5 team last year and have only improved our roster, we’re in great position to be SB contender this year, for sure.

It is true, we have upgraded our talent

Thomas>Ayodele
Felix>Jones
Choice>Thompson
Bennett>Fasano
Jenkins>Reeves
P Jones> N Jones

However, keep in mind that talent didn’t prevent us from reaching or winning the SB. Last season we were much more talented than the GMen.

Very true

With that in mind, what I like most about these additions is how they’ve addressed the real weaknesses on the team. #2 WR is still potentially a little lackluster, as is WR depth, but we’re loaded everywhere else.

Should be interesting to see what they do with all these CBs in training camp.

DB's could be awesome

will make our D awesome…..The only chink in our armor was our DB’s…..we could dominate!

Terry Glenn

If Terry Glenn can play, that is another huge upgrade over last year. Crayton doesn’t scare anyone, and is too slow to take any pressure off of the running game or other receivers. If Austin, Stanback, or Glenn can emerge as a legitimate 30+ catch deep threat, that would be huge.

by Baked Potato Soup on Apr 30, 2008 12:38 AM CDT reply actions

I definitely agree

Crayton is a great slot receiver, but we need TG on the outside again.

Looks good for 2008

BUT, if something happens to Romo! It could be a long season, for the offense.

The D is back in Big D!

you can say that about Indy and NE as well.

No way would they even be .500 with Matt Cassell or Jim Sorgi.

no Romo, oh no

i wonder how we would do with just a fill in QB – with the upgrades to our defense and upgrade in some skill positions on offense and major boost to special teams, could we compete with just a joe average at QB?

by Scoobay on Apr 30, 2008 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

No special teams players?

No kicker? No punter? No long snapper? Three of the Cowboys’ best players, no?

I agree that the biggest difference is the RB and CB depth. However, the Cowboys also have more kickoff and punter returners. I think a huge difference will be at TE, where former basketball players (tall and athletic) Rodney Hannah and Martellus Bennett both could break out. Also at FB, where Deon Anderson could play a full season and catch a whole lot of passes.

What about these players:

FB Ronnie Cruz
DE Marcus Smith
DT Junior Siavii
LB Tearrius Goerge
LB Khari Long
LB Tyson Smith
CB Tyler Everett
CB Justin Phinisee
CB Jerron Wishom
