sure thing.....A two Headed Monster.....is what I envision.

Coach Hudson Houck back at the helm….look for some gapping holes for these two “featured backs” to run through…......vintage early-mid 90’s style…..woooo hoooo…

hmm

so what you’re saying is that since he has similar measurements to all time greats he will be one of the top all time rushers..

See:
Julius Jones 5’10” 208 lbs. etc. etc.

by bryangene on May 1, 2008 9:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't understand what you're trying to prove with this Fanpost

Being around 5’10” and 200 pounds makes you an elite RB? I should’ve played football I guess…

by hiafex on May 1, 2008 9:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the point is

that Jet isn’t too small, on paper at least, to be a feature back.

But yeah, most running backs tend to be 5’10” 200-210lbs, so this isn’t a slam dunk or anything.

by grapejoos on May 1, 2008 9:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow you guys completely missed his point

he was not saying being 5’10 and in the 200-210 range is sufficient to being an elite back. He was merely saying that its ridiculous to say someone with Felix’s body type can’t be a feature back when most of the greats had very similar body types.

by quincyyyyy on May 1, 2008 10:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

thank you quincyyyy.......point well taken....

cuz it’s merely his body type or size, and his lack of collegian starts behind the consensus best overall player in the 2008 draft that have anyone even remotely questioning his ability to be a productive featured back in the NFL….when of course, added to this is the fact Brian Westbrook and Willie Parker were ranked #2 & #3 this past season in the NFL rushing leaders rankings, yet are the same exact size….The icing on the cake is he was able to amass over 5,000 total yards from scrimmage in the SEC as a “complementary” back…....interesting…

Solid point, Boyz

The more I think about it, the more I like this pick. Name me the last ‘smasher’ running back who carved out a hall of fame career. And before you say Jerome Bettis, keep in mind that he was more of a fullback.
That’s not to say that Felix is Brian Westbrook as opposed to Julius Jones, but an interesting fact to keep in mind.

Didn't necessarily paly fullback

But he was built as one, and used primarily in that manner in his later years. True, he got more carries than any fullback, but his role was not that of the mainstream runner.

well.....to be fair....

I actually like Rashard Mendenhall….I would have loved to have him on our team…He’s a tremendous talent, who I think is going to have an great career in Pittsburgh because of their style of play…He should have lots of opportunities to flourish…I’ve been around quite a few athletes that have been “workout warriors” , some who have also “juiced” to be all they can be…I’m not implicating anyone here…but I found it quite odd that Illionois RB Rashard Mendenhall was listed at 5’11” 210 lbs. ON NFL.com’s Draft bio page….And I have seem on other draft sites Rivals.com…him being listed in the 5’11” 215 lbs. range…..I realize players bulk up over the offseason, and in preperation for scouting combines, etc….I noticed Mendenhall on some skills competition shown on ESPN…and sure look like he was “built up”....or had the look of “prison muscles” ....makes me wonder if “with no drug testing” after this past season…..he didn’t do a “cycle” or two….looked like “roid” muscles to me…...something to keep an eye on….

While most of these following players were much taller, heavier, bigger…I’ll run down the list of all time greats that were deemed “big backs”

NFL ALL TIME RUSHING LEADERS :

5. Jerome Bettis- 6’0” 255 lbs, FB
6. Eric Dickerson- 6’3” 220 lbs.
8. Jim Brown- 6’2” 232 lbs.
11. Franco Harris- 6’2” 230 lbs. FB
13. Edgerin James- 6’0” 220 lbs.
14. John Riggins- 6’2” 230 lbs.
15. Corey Dillion- 6’1” 225 lbs.
17. Fred Taylor- 6’1” 228 lbs. (current)
19. LaDamian Tomlinson- 5’10” 221 lbs. (current)
21. Eddie George 6’3” 235 lbs.
22. Ottis Anderson- 6’2” 220 lbs.
25. Earl Campbell- 5’11” 232 lbs.

like EVERYONE….I don’t have a large scope of work to go by to evaluate how he’ll project…....But I see Mendenhall with a similiar game to players highlighted with BOLD…..IF he turns out like any of them…...Pittsburgh got one hell of a player….

I personally feel he's very similar

to Edgerin James, only much faster.

Jerome Bettis

It’s amazing he lasted as long as he did at that weight.

While Earl Cambell is a cripple sadly.

Evolution of the RB

Boyz….I understand your point, and it’s a good one, however all the active RB’s are on the “Big Back” list. Understanding that guys like Emmitt & Tiki are not far removed from their playing days, I would also argue that the evolution of the RB (just like every other position) is bigger and stronger than in previous eras.

With that said, we are also seeing much more of the two back system in the NFL. I think Felix is an incredible talent, but I’m more than happy to see him prosper as a role player along side MB3. I think Felix could be a feature back, but I would rather see him wearing a Dallas Cowboys uniform for a longer period of time by playing a complimentary role in a two-back offense.

I agree Cowboy....this 2 back system will prolong everyone's career...

Felix Jones has “fresh legs” ....and will remain “fresh” as long as he wears a Cowboys uniform….people keep talking about “franchise” or “every down backs”...because they are bigger ? stronger ?.....I’d rather have a back that can “elude” big hits, than have a back that can take big hits….Emmitt was the best at “deflecting” big hits… Guys like J Bettis, E George, E Campbell, C Heyward, M Alstott.. types take a beating every single play…..sure they get everyone worked up with their style of a “bruising” .back….but I am sure they wake up every monday with more bruises than anyone…and most are still waking up every monday in pain….

.M Barber, B Jacobs, L Johnson, S Alexander, J Lewis, D McCallister, R Brown big “bruising” featured” “everydown” type backs will be feeling those big hits long after their playing days are over…..

I thought Felix was 6 ft tall

Not trying to be picky, but I see your point. Size should not be the issue.

But the question remains. If people question if MB3 is an every down back, it seems reasonable to question if FJ can be one. Even Jerry brought up this question, so it must have been on their minds too.

To me an every down back has to block and be able to run it up the gut and break tackles. It seems FJ can catch and take it outside no problem.

by BigE on May 2, 2008 6:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I just wish EVERYONE would get off this "featured" "every down" garbage.....

Like me and anyone else who’s played the game tend to embelish their physical stats on the team program guide…lol….turns out Felix lost a couple inches at the combine.

There is NO such thing in this league…NOWHERE in this league is there a “every down” 25-30 carry a game back, even the teams with “big” backs have somebody that comes in to spell them or offers a change of pace. Any team that doesn’t prescribe to the RB by commitee system are completely assinine…......It’s old news…..just like having to explain this to everyone anymore…

I like Felix

but your point on body size doesn’t work with just size and weight. Smith had a much more stocky frame when compared to Jones. Jones has a similar build to the guy you usually compare him to, Dorsett.

by Romo9 on May 3, 2008 5:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

great point Romo

you can’t judge whether a RB can be a feature back by size and weight, you have to go by his body structure.

RBs like Emmitt and Sanders might have weighed around 200 lbs, but they were stocky and thick below the waist, which is the key to having a RB body, low center of gravity.

Every great RB has that build, even taller backs like Dickerson and Peterson have a thick lower bodies.

and I guess you didn't hear about Jerry explaining Felix's "bubble"

Felix Jones has room to throw on another 10-15 lbs without losing speed or quickness…
