Questioning Authority

One has to question the draft wisdom of GM Jerry with the selection of Martellus Bennett.

Given that it's not a lock that we will re-sign T.O. (he turns 35 in December) and that Glenn is iffy with his injury status, I am still scratching my head over who would be our 2009 Starting wideouts. Right now, it could be Crayton and Miles Austin. My friend says, "you'll see, Stanback is the answer". I keep telling him that being drunk while analyzing the Cowboys depth chart is a bad combo, but obviously, he isn't listening.

Three big contracts are coming up with Ware, MB3 and Newman (not including T.O.) and it makes me wonder if we think that a double TE offense is what we were missing last year when T.O. went down and we suddenly lost our aerial attack.

I just don't know that using the draft for immediate impact is ever a good strategy. Anyone remember the drafting of 3 consecutive CB's several years ago when we had issues at that spot? We know how that worked out. And how about trading two #1's for Joey Galloway? Another winner.

2009 is a capped year, and with all this money we are about to spend to retain our core group, where are we going to find new, top-flight WR talent? I hope I'm not left screaming in anger about Manningham, Andre Caldwell and Early Doucet torching teams in the coming years.

The WR class this year sucked.

That’s all there is to it.

You’d have felt better if Jerry reached in the second round for any of those 3 WRs you just mentioned? Considering none of the 3 came off the board until nearly a full round after the Bennett selection, it’s kind of ridiculous to imply one of the three should have been our selection at 61…

They drafted Bennett because he had hands down the highest upside of anyone available at that point, and after trading that bum Fasano away, we needed another TE. Bennett could prove to be the best in this class…

Taking ANY 1st round receiver was not worthwhile. The best one available at our slot in the second round was Manningham, who slipped an additional 30 spots from that point.Beyond that point, can anyone honestly say that a drafted WR would have a substantial chance of contributing at a higher level than our current projects?

Personally

I was with Jerry I would have moved up and taken Hardy..

I think he will be a beast 6’5”,runs 4.4 40, and he caught 30+ TD’s in college. ONLY DOWNSIDE off the field issues.

Tellus pick was still a good one, but I think hardy will be a dynamic #1 or #2 WR!!

yeah...maybe in like 3-4 years.....

He didn’t run one pro route at all in college…..tons of talent and measurables…but was in a gimmick offense and will take much time to hone his route running skills….

Jerry said that he was trying to move up to get Hardy, but he couldn’t find a partner and ended up going the way he did because of that.

It was Hardy not Sweed

he said it in his post draft press conference. There was no mention of any other WR they were thinking of. Jerry couldn’t find a trading partner to move up so they started trading down.

Bennett could become a better reciever than any of those guys you listed and, like Witten, has the athleticism to play in the slot.

This was a terrible draft for WR’s and next years will be drastically better.

by JamesR on May 12, 2008 11:47 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That COULD make sense but...

How many snaps will Bennett get in this offense? Dallas was missing speed on the edge, Jerry said it was critical to get someone opposite T.O. that could win the single coverage battle and Bennett doesn’t solve that problem this year or next. Besides, isn’t Deon Anderson coming back from injury with the intention to lead block for Marion/Felix (gotta come up with a cool name for that duo)? Are we going to a one-Wr base offense??

As for resumes, I’m not sure that Manningham isn’t much more accomplished than Hurd, Austin and Stanback. Isn’t every pick a boom or bust proposition?

Bennett in passing game

Tom Osborne on Bennett:

Owner Jerry Jones sees all kind of possibilities for Bennett in the red zone. The same goes for coach Wade Phillips, who suggested Bennett could follow in the footsteps of Antonio Gates because he’s a former basketball player, just like San Diego’s Pro Bowl tight end.

"(Bennett) just has a feel for where other people are," Phillips said. "He’s got that body control to rebound, where you have to go up and get the ball. I’ve already noticed him kind of put his hip in there and catch the ball on the side, like basketball players do."

Phillips also raved about the way Bennett, who will wear No. 80, runs routes and gets open.

"I like the way he moves," Phillips said. "He separates from the defensive backs or linebackers. He naturally does that well, which is a real positive."

Another Bennett asset is his ability to block, something he did often for the Aggies. Because of that, the Cowboys can play Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten more in the slot, a move that could result in a mismatch if the defense covers him with a defensive back.

"(Bennett) gives us versatility," Phillips said. "That’s what we were looking for. If (he) can play ‘Y’ (the in-line tight end), you can play two tight ends where you don’t know which one is going to be the receiver."

The Cowboys are counting on Bennett, who had 49 receptions as a junior last season, to make an immediate impact.

It is worth noting that all three of Tony Curtis’ touchdown receptions last year were in 3-TE sets in the red zone.

As a 6’-6” TE with jumping ability and basketball body skills, and he’ll be a real red zone threat.

And next year we go for a WR when the draft class is deeper, or a veteran in FA with all those draft picks Jerry stored up.

Agreed, WR class was NOT strong at all...

so picture it like this… we draft a WR this year with that pick where we took Bennett… are we REALLY any better off???.. probably not, the WR talent was not projected to be that good this year, so why not solidify what you can, RB, CB, and get tat second athletic TE. ALL of whom can contribute this year. It is very possible that MBIII full time, and contributiions of Bennett and Felix, our high powered offense will be even better than last year. Couple that with a corner who will also contribute right away and we are REALLY playing for a Super Bowl NOW.

I can’t belive we will be able to re-sign MBIII, Ware, Newman, T.O. AND bring in a new veteren WR (chad johnson, roy williams, antoin boldin) unless someone some where takes a cut.. and we all know THAT won’t happen in the NFL.

I would think Jerry is hedging his bet on either resigning MBIII to a deal that is semi cap friendly for a year (until there possibly is no more cap in 2010) OR gambling on Felix and Choice becoming a possible tandem in the backfield; letting a high priced MBIII go.
Then picking up someone like Williams, Boldin, or Johnson next year and either letting T.O. go, OR allowing him to stay around, again, at a semi cap friendly price until 2010 using incentives like being on a possible perenial SB contender as his career begins on the downslope.

For the forseeable future we are set with 3rd WRs, could be anyone we have now. Realistically in our O T.O. is a #1 WR for three more years (includes this year coming) if we keep him (in two years he is a #2 reciever on a mediocre team), We can get that #2 young guy who can be the #1, in next years draft or one of the three i mention above. We were NOT going to find that guy in this years draft….

I am extremely happy with Bennett selection over a WR

Instantly improves our rush blocking, pass protection, and check down options, and red zone targets…..There was not one WR in the entire draft that would have contributed to the overall production of our offense, as much as Bennett can and will…...This guy will be a force, fluid athletic ability, large, soft hands, enjoys blocking with power, and can out jump any LB or DB in the league….no complaints here…..Unlike most, I wanted no part of drafting a WR till the 4th (Will Franklin), if at all…We are not in an immediate NEED of a WR…...Unless we were to obtain an elite #1 type via trade, (which obviously wasn’t going to happen, regardless of what we offered) AND we wouldn’t have either Jones or Jenkins right now…..much much bigger NEEDS

I ‘d be content with what we have, and what we could look forward to AFTER this season…Roy Williams, and TJ Who’syourmamma will be available in free agency….and a very impressive draft class, for which we have many extra selections to make a serious move to the top end of the first round.. Let’s go with it….This offense as it stands now is far superior to last years record breaking offensive squad…...btw…...Stanback WILL be starting by mid season. at #2, at least our 3rd when we go 3 wide….....you watch…he is “the answer”

by 5Blings on May 12, 2008 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

steep learning curve <---- huh ?

just thought you should realize he’s actually played WR in college, he’s actually called passing plays for many years and knows exactly what routes are being run…not just his, but every receiver …it’s a huge advantage…..., and is a track star, and has the speed, power, and fluidity and athletisism you look for in a WR…..I see him turning out to be as well or better than Randal El, Bennett, Crayton, and Hines Ward.

I seen enough in his very short window last year to know this kid’s got what it takes…and when Wade Phillips glows while recalling that NOBODY was able to cover him last training camp…...I take it seriously…I already have him as our #2…..and I think he’s only going to confirm that status during this upcoming camp…...pending Glenn’s inability to go 100%

stanback

i would love to see it. wade and jerry were very clear that they didn’t feel pressed to reach or trade for a WR in part because of the potential of the guys in development. i like the idea that stanback is a kind of unknown value that could break out this year and pleasantly surprise everyone. sounds like wade believes he can.

overall, their rationale for not drafting a WR seemed to be:
1) already had a good passing game last year, same guys coming back
2) might get glenn back
3) the younger guys in development have as much potential as any in the draft
4) had better value to help the passing game with other positions, RB & TE
5) can take a look at some sleepers in FA, e.g. Amendola

it is pretty reassuring that we’re in a position that we had 4th overall passing yards last year, have the possibility of getting back a receiver of the level of glenn, have added a breakaway RB with receiving skills, an athletic and tall TE, have exciting potentials in both the developmental players and FA, and some folks still think WR is one of our maybe top two needs, along with SS. it just speaks to the amazing quality and depth of this team.

Our problem wasn't the passing game.

The breakdown for the offense was the inability to run the ball, both early and late in games. We couldn’t establish the run, so by the end of the year, no one respected it. If any back besides the Barbarian was back there, we would have had around 80 yard/game rushing. It would be nice if he could run like that against defensive backs, instead of linemen and linebackers. A 2nd big TE could help out with that, since we suffered even more when our FB went out. Now they can hopefully run a legitimate 2 TE power set. That should also help Romo since he won’t be in 3rd and long all the time.

by Baked Potato Soup on May 12, 2008 4:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You may be right, but if the run game was truly the problem...

Why draft an ex-hoops player whose strength is running the seam routes and whose weakness is in-line blocking? Why not draft more of a power TE who had a history of sealing the edge and pushing the pile?

by 5Blings on May 12, 2008 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

our running game was fixed by just one signing

and it wasn’t even a player, his name is Hudson Houck, offensive line coach, I guarantee our running game will be much improved this year, especially on first and second downs, where this club last year found itself too many times in third and very long situations.

It's odd.

Here’s the problem with NFL draft scouting: there are too many players for the “experts” to really know what they are talking about. Half of the reviews I read said that he was a poor blocker, half said he was a very good blocker. He supposedly started in a predominately running scheme, so I’ve got to think he blocks fairly well. Even if he doesn’t, with his size and athletic ability, they should be able to teach him how.

by Baked Potato Soup on May 12, 2008 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

where'd you get that flawed scouting report ????

A&M didn’t even have a QB that can throw a seam route….and they certainly can thank Bennett for any outside rushing yards they got…..If we wanted some athletic GUARD to play outside and be strickly a run blocker….we might as well throw McQuistan out at TE…..Bennett is a force in the receiving game, and a more than adequate blocker…there’s nothing weak at 6’6” 260lbs…It was his all american football skills that got him on that campus….not hoops..

The running game needs to get better, more consistent. I think with Felix and T-Choice, they have the weapons. If Houck can bring the power running game back to life, this offense will be close to unstoppable.

I don’t know how much better the passing game can get. Our top 2 receivers TO and Witten went over 1,000 yds, Crayton was around 700 yds. Romo threw for over 4,200 yds and 36TD’s.

Yes.

Plus, the most frustrating thing to watch was the inability to close people out strong and put them away. Most games, it felt like teams were still in it, because even if we scored, it was very quick. Often, we didn’t, like against the Packers, where we were up big early, but let them hang around. Look at the Colts before they won the SB, and even the Patriots last year. You have to have a strong running game, no matter how great your passing stats are. That might help with the INT’s, too. I would love to see Romo get down to under 1/game.

we can be sure Felix Jones will be getting quite a few power sweeps out of that formation….maybe with MBIII as a lead back on a CB, Witten in motion knocking out a LB, and Bennett cracking down on the DE.

The strategy will be (again) to blitz Romo (like the Giants did in the playoff game) and double T.O. wit a good shove at the line of scrimmage.

by Wmillion on May 14, 2008 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure I agree with that...

Jim Johnson has always had the scheme, if not the players, to put pressure on our QB’s. There are other defenses out there that have the ablity to ratchet up the pressure on opposing QB’s. Don’t forget the G-Men had like 9 sacks in one game with Osi getting like six of them. I think this has more to do with scheme than players. I also think that to assume Dallas’ offense will whomp on people just because we drafted a 2nd round TE is a bit over the top IMO. In the latter portion of the season, it seemed defenses could slow the Cowboys down by doubling T.O. and single covering the opposite WR.

Who will step up and beat that ne-on-one coverage? Hurd? Austin? Stanback? Amendola? Glenn?

by 5Blings on May 15, 2008 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good Question

If Glenn is healthy the answer is easy..

With price tag being so high or teams unwilling to trade our only is too develop. Training Camp is going to be intense. The young WR’s know the oppurtunity is there, who will take advantage?

You don’t think the Sacks had to do with the players?

"If y'all fresh to death, then I'm deceased."

by Wmillion on May 15, 2008 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Everything has SOMETHING to do with the players..

But in the one game, Osi was eating up a rookie OT from USC. Notice that Ware caught (and passed) Osi in total sacks by the end of the season. The takeaway being the Giant pass rush didn’t dominate everyone for 19 games. Spagnuolo’s scheme started to take hold later in the season.

My point was that the same set of players can perform one way in one scheme, and completely change their stat lines in a different one. Using the 2006 Cowboys defense vs. the 2007 Cowboys defense is a perfect example. With essentially the same group of guys, Dallas put a lot more heat on opposing QB’s in Wade’s 3-4 alignment than Tuna’s.

As for WR’s currently on the roster, no one jumps out at me as a true #2…

by 5Blings on May 15, 2008 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1 Terry.....

While teams are doubling TO and bumping him at the line…they’ll be focusing on Witten, maybe even bumping him with a LB.( a hard task indeed)....while Bennett is chip blocking to slow the DE rush then running a 8-10 yard curl route in the soft spot and Tony will just chuck it up to the big fella….name me one 5’ 10 nickleback that’s going to offer any resistance to this 6’6” leaper ?? Bennett is an option we didn’t have last year….he’s a mismatch on most LB’s or S’s that will try to contain him..

When you look at the playoff game, the deciding factor was our inability to slow the Giant's rush

I think this staff had that playoff game in mind when they drafted a HUGE TE. Not only can he help by chipping off the outside rush, he can then spin off and punish teams that want to blitz us by being a quick release target for Romo.

The offense was dominant at times last year. I agree that without Glenn, we don’t have a natural #2. But I also think TO / Crayton / Witten is about as good a combination as there is outside New England. If Stanback or Glenn or Crayton step up this year… or hell, even Hurd or Austin or Ademola (sp?), this offense has the potential to beat their ‘07 numbers. And that’s not even counting the additional production of Felix or Bennet.

That is amazing to consider.

Guys= Bennett is not going to get that many snaps. We are not going into the 2 TE offense much. Witten of course is starting; and TO. To have two TE’s means running a one back set unless Crayton is not starting. It seemed very clear that Wade and company WANT a FB; and a tall TE is NOT a fullback. Chipping and on sweeps fine; but actually blocking in the backfield takes a shorter more agile person then a 6-6 TE. So Bennett will not be playing that much. Have to laugh at the A & M guy claiming that Bennett is such a great blocker= most of the scouting reports said he needed a lot of work.

Can't say I agree

Dude, you really think they spent a 2nd round draft pick on a guy that “seems clear” to not be part of the plan?

I agree that the 2 TE will not suddenly become a staple of the offense, but Bennett will get his snaps. To think otherwise is to assume we wasted the pick.

red zone target

how they’ve specifically talked about is using him is in red zone, where a 6-6er with jumping ability and good rebound style body control can get up above the traffic in the end zone. They like TEs in the red zone anyway—last year all three of Tony Curtis’s TDs were 3-TE sets. I don’t know how many snaps he’ll get overall, but I expect we’ll see him plenty in these situations.

i'd sure like to see these scouting reports that claim he needs alot of work blocking....you got links ??

I disagree with your premise

that you can second guess the Cowboys staff on their draft picks. The one area that fans can weigh in on this early is arrest/conviction history (or lack thereof). The risky move was Pacman not any of the draft picks (as far as I know none have convictions) We will see in 3 years how those turned out.

I remember the buzz against Jerry Jones when the Cowboys selected Jason Witten. That turned out not so bad,

Bennett is a terrific pick to me in that his measurables are as good as you can ask for including speed. He is over 6’ 6”, 259 pounds has a 34” (combine) to 39” (campus) vertical leap, 9 1/2’ hands, runs a 4.68 (Witten was 4.65) and is reported to be a great blocker.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

I actually thought Witten was a great pick

at the time as he was graded by many as the best TE in the draft and carried a solid 2nd rd grade.

Let me see if I read your post right...

So, you’re saying that as a fan, we’re not afforded the right to call into question the strategy behind who the team we root for, buy paraphernalia from, buy tickets to see and pay extra satellite viewing fees for?

Is that what you’re saying? Because if you are, you’ll probably want to avoid my posts like they were kryptonite, because I plan to call them as I see them, controversial or not.

The other part of your post that jumped out at me is that you suggest we (fans) shouldn’t second guess (much less deride) the choices made by the team, but then you go on to post the player’s triangle numbers and then some, as if to provide validation for the choice. This shas the scent of someone who is a Cowboys War Room apologist and thinks they can do no wrong, and that’s fine, but I would say the right that allows you to support the pick is the same one that affords me the opportunity to question it.

+ although he didn't get all the attention and accolades while at Tennessee...He was rated the #1 TE by Scouts.com at the time of the draft

He was considered an overall (blocking & receiving) the best TE prospect as opposed to the other more heralded receiving TE’s available.
