The Roy Williams Paradox

I've been stewing all off-season about how Dallas needs to think differently about the Safety position. It seems that ever since Roy Williams arrived in Big D, no one's been really sure how to use him. First there was the 'let Darren Woodson and him split the field in two' notion, then there was the 'let him play in the box and make plays' idea. Now it seems we're minimizing his deficiencies by taking him off of the field in certain downs and distances.

Time for you all to weigh in...

Poll
What do you think Dallas should do with Roy Williams this year?
  • He's a Pro Bowler so play him!!
  • Play him, but pull him on 3rd downs and obvious passing downs
  • Trade him
  • Cut him after June 1st
  • Other

Ain’t nobody going to trade us for a washed up player getting ever so closer to the dreaded 30. Cut Him!

by quincyyyyy on May 12, 2008 8:08 PM CDT   0 recs

That is just crazy

If did cut him we should save 3.7 mil in salary, but it would accelerate 4.4 mil in bonuses. so it would be a 700k cap loss, not bad..

BUTYou can’t cut him or trade him(unless you get a safety in return). We have zero depth at safety if we cut him.. You can’t cut a 5 time pro-bowler and hope a 2nd year player with 4 tackles can fill if someone goes down.. No way!!

Hamlin or watkins goes down, get the vaseline ready…

As much as you guys hate Roy, our roster doesn’t make it possible..

Pro Bowls Don't Mean Much

They’re as much about reputation as accomplishment. Williams is a major liability.

by kindablue on May 12, 2008 9:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

really

Don’t mean much, I disagree.

Sorry still not buying cutting Roy, no depth.

Not having roy is a bigger liablility, then having him in coverage on a limited basis..

Probowls are nothnig more than a popularity contest

almost eighty players in each conference gets voted to go because of all the alternates.

I heard Nate Newton say that the whole team took five minutes after practice to fill out the probowl form, he said he didn’t know alot of the players on it, he just checked the names he knew.. The fans are the same way, they vote for their own teams players, over and over, you’re telling me that makes you a probowler…..it makes the probowl a joke!!

I highly doubt Roy will be cut ths year, only because of his salary, but next year is what he has to worry about if his play doesn’t drastically improve….

Salary

is only 700k Cap hit!

We couldn't do any worse

Replace Roy with Watkins or Brown.

Get SS out of your minds. There is no such thing anymore. Both guys have to be cover safeties. Move Hamlin to SS and Watkins to FS and have Brown, Henry or a FA pickup as the back up.

Agreed

What the French?! Toast!

by thebigham on May 13, 2008 2:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

disagree

I am not going to trust Brown or Henry to back them up..

I love how you can just plug anyone back there..

I agree on the statement about theres no thing as SS anymore really its more of a cover saftey.

I agree with that

More Laron Landry’s and Less John Lynch’s..

Roy is just caught in the new NFL

He’s an in the box safety in a league that’s more and more of an attacking spread offense, forcing Roy out of the box and forced to cover, and since he’s not a very athletic player, he has serious problems covering, he’s not OK, he’s horrible.

If Roy played in a different era(80’s), he’d be a star, less passing offenses, tighends weren’t thought of as much of a weapon, but in todays game Roy’s out of his league, Enjoy it while it lasts, what, if anything there is to enjoy the way he gets beat and the excuses he now throws out there, I dont see him in a cowboy uniform in 2009, its time to move on and stop making excuses for his play, he’s nothnig more than an average safety.

by Deke on May 12, 2008 8:22 PM CDT   0 recs

How sad...

Do you think he could beef up and play a linebacker spot?

by 5Blings on May 12, 2008 8:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

tough to do.

already lost 25+ lbs

Unfortunately, linebackers

Have to cover, too. Maybe if he gained like 100 pounds, we could try him at DE?

The biggest problem

is that his heart’s not in it anymore so he doesn’t have the drive or desire to adjust. He will make a lot of empty promises, be the same spotty player this year as he was last year and be benched by game 10.

Next year, the Redskins will sign him to a $55 million contract.

by Billito on May 12, 2008 8:57 PM CDT   0 recs

If he gave up?!?!?

Then why is he training so hard this off-season? He has heard all of the gripes and whining. He is doing something about it and you won’t even give him the benefit of the doubt, to let the season play out.

He is right , where is his supporters.. It is easy to hate!!

Roy brush your shoulders off!

by Wmillion on May 12, 2008 10:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah and last season

he was trimmed down, flying around the field and so excited to not play for Parcells and what did we get? The same missed plays and broken coverages. Wmillion, you are about to blow a gasket defending Roy so I don’t want to get you riled up but you are wrong when you say it is easy to hate. This is my team for all my life and I want nothing more than a successful season. Its just that after watching Roy blow it time and again, the words “Roy” and “Sucks” come together in my head and just won’t seem to go away no matter how many promises he makes.

If he comes back and has a great season I will admit I was wrong and buy you a virtual beer but unfortunately, I don’t think I will be changing my tune anytime soon.

by Billito on May 13, 2008 5:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agree to Disagree

I got Roy doing a great job in Run Support next year. I see them really minimizing his role in Pass coverage. Roy has lost even more weight, now his weight mirrors the new age safety..

Roy didn’t suck last year, he didn’t cost us any games. He doesn’t suck, he hasn’t been the player he was in the past. When start calling guys with quality stats for a safety sorry, you are hating. I see that as prety clear cut. We were ranked 13th in pass D last year with him back there. J. Reeves was the guy everyone was targeting..

I am starting hear a little skip bayless out of you guys..

"If y'all fresh to death, then I'm deceased."

by Wmillion on May 13, 2008 6:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Skip Bayless?

I was okay agreeing to disagree but that is a cheap shot. Obviously I don’t think you are correct about Roy but I don’t infer you are an idiot because we don’t agree. That was as cheap as one of Roy’s patented horse collar tackles.

hey yeah!

Dem’s fightin’ words!

Billito-

Your right I take that back(skip bayless comment). I owe you a beer, or 2, or a six pack, if we ever meet.

I truly despise skip bayless, not sure what I would say or do if I saw that cat on the streets..

Right on Wmillion

And I shouldn’t say “Roy sucks” but he is just such a huge disappointment to me – his declining play, his salary and now his way of using every excuse in the book instead of just re-commiting himself and trying to get better. I just hate to see and hear how he is carrying himself in regards to football.

by Billito on May 14, 2008 1:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I can agree to that 100%

Mickey says it best
Jeff Peters, Paris, Texas: Look, I am tired of all the fans just ready to ship off Roy Williams for “whatever we can get.” Are you kidding me? For who? With the unfortunate passing of Sean Taylor, who was a free safety, not a strong safety, who is a better strong safety in the NFC? Maybe LaRon Landry in a year or two, but right now, no one. After the 2004 season Roy was entering his second Pro Bowl and was probably the No. 1 player on the roster to Cowboys fans. Now he’s a bum? Look at the statistics from 2004 and 2007. Almost identical. Where is the loyalty?

Mickey: Boy, there still is a Roy Williams fan club out there and a bunch of you over the weekend certainly have rushed to his defense. (There is a joke in there I’ll refrain from using.) To answer your question, Williams had more than 100 tackles in two of his first three seasons with the Cowboys and totaled 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage in those three seasons. He also had 17 pressures and seven forced fumbles. This past year, while he did have 115 tackles, none was for a loss, no forced fumbles, no sacks and only five passes defensed. But more than numbers, it’s not making plays that bothers you.

Seems pretty clear to me!!!

by Deke on May 12, 2008 10:21 PM CDT   0 recs

I am going to give him one last chance before i'm ready to bury him....although I'm ready....with shovel

If he can actually get down to 215-220…I think that’s going to help him out tremendously….I still do think he’ll be taken out during obvious passing plays though when we employ nickle/dime packages …..and we’ll insert speed all over the place…I can see Henry & Jones at the outside corners, and Newman at the slot with Hamlin and possibly Jenkins playing deep ....

that’s one bad ass secondary right there….

It's scary is what it is

When you have Ellis, Ware, and Spencer coming at you, and nowhere to dump the ball off.

I think the Cowboy’s sack rate is going to jump this year with Adam Jones, Scandrick/Jenkins, Newman, and Henry taking away the passing game, leaving more time for the pressure to get to the QBs. Even the Almighty Patriots were brought low by the pass rush of the New York Football Midgets.

How Bout Them Cowboys!

+1

Someone from the blog predicted 20 sacks for Ware.. I agree.

by Wmillion on May 13, 2008 8:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i did...lol...and it should be close...

just imagine the amount of pressures that Ware gets, always within a stride or so of getting a sack…......now give him .5 – 2 seconds more each rush….and those pressures start turning into sacks…the secondary improvements will also lead to more blitzing…..more sacks, more picks…I see Dallas with at least 10 more sacks than this previous year, which in turn would lead the league. And of course more pic’s as well….in which we’ll be right near the top as well. If Dallas isn’t ranked in the top 3 in total defense by the end of the year, I’d be totally shocked..And Brian Stewart should be fired if we aren’t.

I agree

I mean, it’s a lot to ask for, but this defense is loaded with talent. Spencer’s development is going to be key. If he becomes a bonafide rusher, we can get really creative with pressure packages. Ware, Ellis, and Spencer are all converted DEs…there are loads of possibilities. I am really excited by how good this defense could be.
