We Need a New Name for Our Running Game

We need a new name for the combo of speed and power, strength and agility, sound and fury that is the Cowboys combo of Marion and Felix. I'll throw some out to start, but maybe we can narrow it down to a few options and then I'll put a poll out to see which ones are most liked. Maybe the 'Boys end up adopting it?

Suggestions;

1. Smash and Dash

2. Stun and Run

3. Churn and Burn

4. Romp and Stomp

Others?

I'm yelling it anyway.

I figured if we can get away with the excuse that we’re cheering on the team, I won’t get as many dirty looks when I’m yelling at the Cheerleaders doing their kick line.

Great post

was going to recommend it even before reading it. because i was thinking the same thing. i’m sure some remember the “Pony Express” – Eric Dickerson and Craig James. I wonder when’s the last time any NFL team has regularly used two tailbacks as a base set…

anyway, was thinking about MBIII’s nickname – “Barbarian” which led me to thinking of the game “Gauntlet” – he’d be the warrior of course. so something like
“Running the Gauntlet”

butcher, baker, candlestick maker, and the BARBER – lol

Barber shop quartet (along with Cricket, Choice, and the Cat)

Felix is simple….but we might as well call MBIII “Oscar” cuz he’s acting like he deserves LT type money…....

Haha

I like Shock and Awe, you know, assuming they’re capable of both.

But let’s be real, ESPN will call them the hackneyed “thunder and lightning” or some unholy combinations of syllables of their names (MarJo etc.). My money’s on FeBar.

by grapejoos on May 15, 2008 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Keep in Mind...

that this has to be catchy enough to make the ESPN NFL Primetime highlights, but also descriptive enough of the two backs to be relevant.

Regardless, Gin and Juice will make the final 5 when the poll comes along.

It might be a Trilogy…

"If y'all fresh to death, then I'm deceased."

by Wmillion on May 16, 2008 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

It could just as easily be the Choice-Jones combo if Barber doesn’t lower his price.

As it stands, I’m guessing Choice will get a few 3rd-down carries. But if Barber’s contract situation remains strenuous, we might get to see a little more of Choice that we thought.

by accidental innuendo on May 16, 2008 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

Hopefully we will have a couple of blowouts like we did last year, so Choice can come in for mop up duty..

"If y'all fresh to death, then I'm deceased."

by Wmillion on May 17, 2008 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that's the plan, blowout or not.

MB3 really seemed to wear down in the playoff game, due to his brutal style. If they can get Choice in there to help grind it out and move the chains once we have the lead, that could really help. Sometimes you just need a guy to get 3-4 yards every down and not go backwards, and from what I’ve read about Choice, he is exactly the kind of back that can do just that. Just eat clock and keep getting first downs, mixed in with Jones and help keep Barber fresh, instead of killing himself when we already have the lead.

by Baked Potato Soup on May 17, 2008 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

I kinda think the carries will go somewhere around Barber 60%, Felix 20%, Choice 20%.
In addition, Felix will be moved around (slot, split out wide, in motion) so he can get more touches.

"If y'all fresh to death, then I'm deceased."

by Wmillion on May 17, 2008 1:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

To be quite honest...I'm not liking any of those...and the more I see these combo's the more and more i'm opposed to such a plan to stick a moniker or catchy name on them....

The only one I feel is worthy was one brought up by Tom (APerfectStar)

.....”The Perfect Storm”

The Perfect Storm as it equates to the more logical Thunder & Lightning manifestation we’ve grown to adopt….and it certainly plays into their style.

... and if you throw Adam Jones into the trio …we’ll have thunder, lightning, and rain.......dollars that is..

The one phrase i’ve always enjoyed since it’s first use in the Gulf War conflict is “Shock and Awe” which is the closest to describing the dementions this duo will bring to the field….so if i was compelled to even vote on something….that’s the one I’d select….and should be added to any poll.

Or if we wish to include Tashard Choice and Dion Anderson….we can call it :

The Stable of Doom , which would encompass all of our backfield mates…as I am sure all may play a role in bringing horror to defenses ….

finally….....IF there is a poll, and there is a chosen winner…..please don’t throw this down our throats on every ensuing post that follows….I’m already wavering against it…...FACT is ….they already have “NICK NAMES” Felix Jones = “The Cat” MBIII = “Barbarian” .....which are far better than anything i’ve seen suggested…

Cat and the Barbarian seems much more fitting, fluid, appropriate….and is the only name these two should be addressed with…..

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

but you are in the minority. I think this has been a great post with lots of good ideas. Grizz’s preliminary poll looks good to me.

by Billito on May 17, 2008 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for the shout out Boyz

But actually my suggestion was “The Brazilian”, and I’m pretty sure nobody liked it judging by the lack of response. But I got a chuckle out of it. One of the problems, like Boyz mentioned, is they both have cool nicknames individually. I mean The Barbarian is perfect, and The Cat (or El Gato) is perfect as well. Tough to top those with an all encompassing name.

Out of the ones Grizz listed, I like Smash and Dash the most.

Couple more:

Beauty and The Beast
Rip and Zip
Slash and Burn

“Brazillian” – i’m not too sure “everyone” is in the loop enough to catch the humor and knows it was in reference to a predominantly female genitalia waxing…

by BoyzRback on May 17, 2008 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah...and I gave you a ^5 for it.....perfect name for those two...

I still contend that we keep “The Cat” and “The Barbarian” as that’s what they are already known by friends and teammates…...why change a good thing ? all of us certainly know who we’re talking about when those two names are mentioned….

the negative connotation. we want Barber to crash through the line and Felix to burn the secondary, but “crash and burn” isn’t what we want our offense to do overall. A “crash and burn” offense might not sound so great!

How that one has been chosen by the majority so far is beyond me….it’s not catchy, marketable, or indicitive of their actual skill set…..

It’s gonna get old very quick.

The only choices worth a damn are:

Hit and Run

You’re such a malcontent. What’s not to like?

It’s simple, quick off the tongue, and a pretty good approximation of their strengths. I hope to see it used in more than a few articles next season as the Cowboys’ ground game takes off. Seriously, I really think Romo’s stats are going to take a blow next season at the expense of Barber and Jones.

The poll’s not over, so everyone should still go vote for their favorite. And thanks everyone who has already voted.

Flash and Dash

I just heard the CNN meteorologist refer to storms as “flash and dash” – lightning and then clear – I’d never heard that before, not sure if he just made it up, or if it is sort of a catchy weather term – but that makes it metaphorically consistent as an alternative to thunder and lightning!

Judging by the voting

It looks like Smash and Dash and Smash and Flash together have the most votes. I nominate Smash and Flash as the official candidate. Maybe a runoff?

I’m a little hesitant about applying any nickname until I see Felix in action though (jinxes and such).

by grapejoos on May 26, 2008 7:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

'Smash and Dash' Has More Votes

And this ‘hit and run’ thing just won’t go over well with the non-Grand Theft Auto 4 crowd. No way it ever makes ESPN. They’d be worried about the PR flack…

by 5Blings on May 26, 2008 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok ok

I went with Flash, having originally voted for Dash. I like the sound of it better. But Dash works for me too.

Shock and Awe is my favorite personally, but “Awe” is a lot to ask for out of a rookie RB :)

by grapejoos on May 27, 2008 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also

I don’t like Hit and Run because they’re both RBs. They both run. So it’s not the nice dichotomy you like with stupid nicknames like these.

by grapejoos on May 27, 2008 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

just one tends to run into you, the other past you…

by scottmaui on May 27, 2008 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right

When I think of MB3, it’s almost always him hitting a defensive player and blowing them up. When I think about Felix Jones I see him running right by some hapless linebacker and getting big yards. Simple and to the point, one will hit you the other will run by you. Hit and Run. I voted for this one. Anyway, it’s time for a different poll soon, that one has reached over 500 votes.

by Dave Halprin on May 27, 2008 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That makes sense

I suggested Smash and Flash because MB3, of course, smashes into and over defensive players, and I liked Flash for Felix because of the superhero Flash who could move past people so fast it appeared as if they were standing still.

I associate Hit and Run with car related accidents, kind of a downer.
