2nd year players
It's been discussed over and over again, but not more recently due to the excitement of bringing in new talent through the draft. But what about yesterday's song, the sophomores who are returning this year? Perhaps more than the rookies, they have the potential to improve our already good team since they have a year of experience under their belt, have had some playing time, and are practicing regularly against our pro-bowl laden squad of talent. Time will tell but it's time for them to start producing...
While we're on the subject, can anyone think of recent players who have had their breakout season in their 2nd year? Do we really need to wait until the 3rd year to see some fruit?
For purposes of this poll, I decided to include Tank Johnson who of course is not a 2nd year player, but it'll be his 2nd year with the Cowboys. I didn't include Ken Hamlin who has for all intents and purposes 'broken out' already. Same for Nick Folk.

Well..
If Cowboys get creative like the giants or if Ellis goes down (lets hope not) Spencer will have a great year and be a great player when he gets his chance to shine. Idk about the rest of you but i was pleasantly pleased with how he played last year with the little time he had to prepare. Coming straight in as a rookie is never easy not he was changing position too.

Agreed.
Also, I think Anderson will have a solid season just as he was having before his injury last year. And then there’s Tank, a full off-season to get in shape and prepare will work wonders for him.

My Money's on Stanback
I got the guy with 40+ catches and 5+ TD’s this year. Romo likes to throw downfield and Stanback will be seeing a lot of single coverage..

If he truly can’t be covered by anyone on our first team defense (which includes one of the best cover corners in the league!), then we may just have our wow factor on defense. I also look for Spencer to get a lot more work on 1st and 2nd down this year, as I think Ellis will be used more as a situational pass rusher this year. Spencer proved to be a pretty solid all around backer, and really did well picking up on the coverages considering his lack of time to pick up on it.

huh?
can’t be covered by anyone on our D? Where did you come up with that?

Wade

He's lying.
Maybe not lying, but at least exaggerating. If Stanback was even good enough to burn the 2nd teamers, he would have gotten a lot more opportunities already.

Sure he would have
That is if he would have stayed healthy long enough last year to see the field for more than two games. You’re not going to rush along a QB trying to make the transition to WR, even if he is really talented. I’m not saying that he’s to the point where he can read the coverages and adjust his routes accordingly, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that some of our first teamers can’t match up with him athletically.

I meant offense
And not defense when I put the wow factor comment.

It wasn't
in the news. He and a few other people were held up at gunpoint but he got away. The reason I know is I know one of the managers that works there.

Anthony Spencer and Anderson
I like Spencer to have a breakout year, there were signs of that last year when he was in there. Anderson will play a big role as the wedge buster on special teams and if used correctly on offense, could be a real threat out of the backfield. I dont consider Tank a second year player, he’s entering his third year in the league.

I'm going with Tank
He was a big part of the best defense in the NFL before he came here. If Rat is moved to DE, I think we see Tank coming into his own as a vital cog on the line. He’s very difficult to move and has shown in the past that he can get to the QB. Now that he’s been given some time to master the nuances of the 3-4, we could see the Tank show up in a major way during his contract year.

Tank shouldn't be on this list
because he’s more of a veteran player. I’m going with Stanback over Spencer because if TG has trouble with his knee again, that #2 WR position should be wide open after Crayton’s choke job against the GMen.
Ellis will be too good for Spencer to beat out, too much veteran savy.
In Romo we Trust

If you are judging 2nd year guys
There’s not any reason for Tank to be on the list. He’s got 4 seasons under his belt.

I think it’s probably going to be Cricket, as he seemed to get better and take on a bigger role in the offense before his injury. If he picks up where he left off, he should be a critical part of the running game and ST coverage.
Spencer is going to be good, but he won’t get to shine until Ellis is gone.
I voted for Stanback, I don’t have a good reason, just a gut feeling he’ll step it up this season. Although, according to Sgagnola:
Stanback is one of those guys who seems to run as fast as he needs to in order to get the job done. He ran a 10.48 in the 100 meters in college, good enough to finish fifth in the Pac-10 Conference track meet and remember, the Baltimore Orioles drafted him in 2006 after he had not played competitive baseball since high school, another indication of his athletic ability. During the rookie mini-camp receivers coach Ray Sherman, not one given to hyperbole, said he was completely confident Stanback would “contribute” at wide receiver this year.

Spencer
I am really looking forward to seeing what they will do with the D if Spencer develops. We might have the best CB corps in the league. We have the best LB in the league, all due respect to others. Ellis is a great situational rusher and is very smart. Think about all we can do – we have 3 pass rushing OLBs who are converted 4-3 DEs. We have quickness at DT, beef at DE on the 3-4. Oh, and our MLB group of Zach Thomas, James, Burnett, and Caveman isn’t shabby by any means. I wish Madden was complex enough to really play with the potential player packages there. I expect a hellacious pass rush this year.
I also think Cricket will have a good year. The guy just refuses to fail. As for Stanback, I have high hopes, but no predictions yet.

apologies
to those who disagree with including Tank on the list – as mentioned, i just decided to throw him on there since he’s a 2nd year player for the Cowboys. In some ways it’s interesting to see that he’s actaully gathered some votes. I’m very intrigued by Tank – with the Bears, he did the grunt work while guys like Harris, Briggs, and Urlacher made the plays. What kind of impact will he have with a full training camp under the Phillips 34?
Many here were clamoring to draft a backup NT – we didn’t. Many wanted to go out and get a veteran WR or draft someone early – we didn’t. A few had their sights on Hillis or Schmitt as FB’s available in the mid-early rounds – didn’t touch them. Players we already have in those positions are the ones we’re staking on for having breakout years for various reasons. At least there’s reason for optimism!
