T-New

Just saw an article from the Dallas Morning News where it looks like Terence Newman is close to signing a contract extension. I know there has been a lot of talk about this, and whether he would demand too much from us or if we could a hometown discount. It looks as though he wants to stay here and get a deal done soon. All I can say is good for Jerry and Steven! This is huge in my estimation, we need to lock this guy up because I am in the camp that believes he is a top 5 corner in this league.

Now just waiting to hear more about the two no-shows at OTAs. We need to the Barbarian re-signed along with Hamlin. I just hope we aren't overlooking these guys while they are working on T-News deal. That could breed some bad blood.

Like I said

I’ll believe it when I see it. I’ll go through the roof it we strap our cap on an aging CB when we have several other players who are vital to this franchise and will be here much longer than Newman.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll love this deal if it’s cap friendly. The key is not to handcuff our salary cap. I just don’t think it’s as close as some of the reports have indicated or else the Mickey or Nick over at Cowboys.com would’ve had an article out by now.

CB is a critical role on the team

Don’t tell me you are wanting to chance going back to the days of SuperMario and Co – I think we had about 4 or 5 RCBs roll through in Mario’s three years at LCB. I do agree that we look much deeper now than we have in several years, but ultimately, we still have two CBs that are proven. If we have the same type of injury issues as last year, we’ll be starting either Jones or Jenkins and neither is proven as an NFL CB. Jones, while talented, has been out of the league for a year and still isn’t working out with the team. Nobody knows when, how long and what he’ll bring to the table if every offered a seat by the commish. Likely, he’ll be reinstated, but there is a lot to unravel before we can even see what he has.

Likewise, Newman was argued to be the Best Player in his relevant draft year and he still needed time to come on and create an impact on a team that was devoid of CB talent when he was a rookie. Jenkins and Scandrick and Ball all have potential, but potential doesn’t get you there. Its a great start and I like the way we look for the future – IF Newman is apart of the near future.

Also – I think Jerry learned his lesson of cap-strapping the team. He’s looking for a high-level of sustained success. To deliver that, you have to be in a position to manage the cap smartly. Thus, the delay on moving on Barber.

My thing

If he is locked up, I hope it isn’t for more than 4 or 5 years. Currently, I think he’s one of the few shutdown corners in the league, but you can’t expect that to last much longer than that time frame. Would I love to see him pull a Darrell Green and still have blazing speed into his 40’s? Of course. Is it realistic? Of course not. I think considering how difficult it is to get good corners these days, you’d be nuts not to lock down one of the leagues premier guys for his prime. Not to mention you can’t logically expect the rookies to be at his level by next year, regardless of how talented they are.

I hope it gets done..

I think he is more Important to our success then Barber.

I knew Newman would be signed eventually

To me, its a no brainer. Newman is clearly a top elite CB in this league and those guys don’t grow on trees. They’re rare players and you lock them up no matter what, I don’t care if he’s 30 this season, he’ll play at this elite level until he’s 34-35 easily.

+1

I don’t know why some people were so against this move. I think it’s great for the Cowboys and the fans.
