Dallas Cowboys sign Marion Barber to seven year deal

Per the DMN blog:

The Cowboys and running back Marion Barber have come to terms on a seven-year, $45 million deal, with $16 million guaranteed, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. Barber will earn $21 million over first three years of the deal.

This is a GREAT deal, for both sides. Barber now has long term security with the Cowboys and doesn't have to worry about whether the team is committed to him or not. Jerry Jones is able to keep a top running back for a decent price as well. 7 years is a long time for a running back, but it helps to spread that money around.

Ok boys, who's next to sign?

Holy cow, busy day

To be honest, this is a bit surprising. It seemed like the two sides were pretty far apart on numbers.

Wow

So is the opt out of the CBA forcing deals to get done today?

I keep hearing that

Don’t know how many of you guys are Ticket listeners but they keep mentioning that they had to get the deals done b/c of a deadline since they owners opted out, but they haven’t explained what the deadline is or anything about it.

7 years....

wow, that is a long contract considering the Barbarian’s style of running. I’m glad they got something done.

Yeah

Doesnt mean the team has to keep him that long though…

Hmmm, is Hamlin next?

Things come in three’s you know. That would be QUITE a day!

by John Boy on May 20, 2008 3:14 PM CDT   0 recs

That is a ton of money for a part time runner

But I’m sure Stephen is going to gather a ton of that money into 2010 and make a lot of the following years very low-risk.
And before y’all lynch me for besmirching MB3, let me say that I am elated that we get to keep him. Next to Demarcus Ware, who I might be gay for, Barber is my favorite player in the NFL. I’m just not so sure if keeping him is the smartest decision on a financial level.

by Longhorn on May 20, 2008 3:16 PM CDT   0 recs

So very Disappointing

I am so disappointed with this move. A franchise contract for a part-time running back who is good but not great, and eminently replaceable. Poor, poor allocation of scarce resources: a first round draft pick AND a huge deal spent on the running back position?! The Cowboys could have gotten 90% of the running back production without spending a first round pick and a ton of $$$$.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Damn I’m frustrated. This has a significant negative impact on our ability to sign Canty and Hamlin, two players who I believe are far more critical to the success of the Cowboys than MB3 and much harder to replace. I think I’ll have to drink some beers this evening. Well, at least I’ll have a few months to blow off my frustration so I can start cheering for Barber again.

The Newman signing rocks though.

I agree in part

but I was all for MB3 and less for Newman. I’m sure they front loaded the heck out of both contracts and both are probably more like 3 or 4 year deals. After that, I’m sure the contract goes up like crazy.

by Boyzfan94 on May 20, 2008 3:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

bigger signing bonuses

up front and less amount per year on the contract. Keeps the base salary down.

Just a theory, but if MB3’s deal is more like a 4 year deal that would pave the way for Choice to replace him since that will be the end of his rookie contract.

by Boyzfan94 on May 20, 2008 4:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think you have to give the Jones

the benefit of the doubt. They have proven to get quality players at very reasonable deals and I know Jerry has learned about messing around with the salary cap. I seriously doubt we’ll see MB3 running here in 4 years and I have no doubt the deal front loads the $$ and gives the boys every option to cut their losses should injury or declining play occur. We’ll sign Hamlin and Canty next, wait and see.

by Billito on May 20, 2008 3:40 PM CDT   0 recs

You do

They have done a great job of managing the cap and keeping this team together.

I don’t think they would have signed this deal if they thought it meant they couldn’t keep Canty or Hamlin. Hamlin is a huge key but he’s also in line for a huge payday. Somehow I think all of the deals will get done.

There is a master plan at work, and the goal of that plan is to give this team a core capable of winning the Super Bowl until TO retires, essentially. The framework is in place. Who knows how much longer we’ll be able to keep a roster this good together, but to have 13 pro bowlers last year (say what you will), not lose any, add 2 first round picks, AND add Zach Thomas and Pacman Jones to the team, with very little cap room to play with, is pretty impressive.

We'll have the opportunity to draft someone else between now and then

I don’t think Choice will get the opportunity to really show his abilities in whole unless Barber gets hurt for an extended period of time. Four years from now – We’ll more than likely have a new backfield all together.

well....if we were going to sign anybody....these two were essential...

MBIII’s contract falls right in line with what i predicted, albeit I had him signing for 6 years 36-39 with the same 16 million bonus….the 7th year equates to the same monies…I’m sure the length of this deal had alot to do with the structuring….as i’m sure it has to be a cap friendly 4 year deal in reality.

.I also figured Newman would get 6 years 48-50 million….which was right on…22.5 mil bonus leads me to think it’s more on the lines of a 3 year extention in reality…with much of the bonus paid in the first three years….which is true with the 3 year 21 million in first three years…..’with the last three being cap diluting years…..

Overall good day…..lol….this may have swung my thoughts of moving to DFW….woooohooo..

got to be hamlin, followed by canty. And I don’t know when, but I hope they’ll sign a veteran #2 WR. Crayton needs to be a #3.

by g8tgod on May 20, 2008 4:14 PM CDT   0 recs

Unless you can get some cap savings. . .

I’d play Hamlin on the Franchise Tag. Guarantees he plays at market value and gives us another year to evaluate the players in the backfield. If Henry is a target to potentially move to Safety. . .If RW finally steps up to expectations. . .if Courtney Brown improves as a second year Safety – let alone a second year NFL player. . .if Watkins takes a huge step forward. . .

There are several scenarios that might not require a long term deal on Hamlin. Then again – with another year in the can, you have more knowledge about your need to have him here longer term. Just my thinking.

Great Moves

Marion will earn his money. The guy is going to get 20 Carriers a game.. Choice will not see the field unless he is needed and this fine with me…

Hamlin may have to wait until next year..

I wonder what type of money Canty wants.

if MB3 gets 20 carries a game

he’ll burn out by December. If the Cowboys coaches are smart, he’ll only average 15-17 touches per game and allow the youngins get some PT, thats why we drafted them, not to sit on the bench.

We need MB3 fresh for the playoff run.

Every running back is different..

I just don’t see him only getting 15 carriers a game…

He wanted to get played like a top back , he got paid, and he will be expected to carry the mail like one..

LJ, LT, Sjackson, etc.. all get 20 carriers a game.

those guys don't run as hard

and tough as MB3. If he gets 20 carries a game he’ll be useless to us in December and January and he’ll only play a few more years.

love that picture.......wooo hoooo...

MBIII 15-18 carries a game…
Felix Jones 8-15 carries a game
Choice 3-5 carries a game

Look for more of a ball controlled 55% pass- 45% rush sequence from Garrett this year.,...I’m sure they’d like to keep Romo under 30 passes a game…A big reason we got Bennett at TE…expect about 30-35 rushing plays per game with Barber getting about 18, Jones 12, and Choice possibly 5 per…....

I agree, Hamlin's chances not looking too good

As far as getting a long term deal right now. He should have told his agent to take the original offer, if they weren’t that far apart as reported. I have to think his agent is a moron who saw what the Raiders gave Gibril Wilson and was blinded by the $$$. I think they leave him franchised this season and then reassess the situation later. He’s not going to hold out with over $4 mil at stake.

Not this season anyway, but I thought MB3 didn’t have a chance either so…lol. Well see, but the odds are he will have to wait until after the season.

by Boyzfan94 on May 20, 2008 6:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hamlin is going to get paid

The question is where. Dallas is in a good situation with him and Canty. They will play here for a reasonable rate on the “Romo plan” – show you’re the real deal, and you’ll get rewarded. If the Cowboys can’t afford him, someone will.

Personally, I think our safeties may change a lot. If Roy returns to form, who knows, we may be set at SS. If Pacman gets reinstated, we can seriously consider moving Henry to FS (and Hamlin to SS). And keep in mind those two kids in Watkins and Brown, who just might be something.

Canty has us in a tighter spot in terms of need, but thankfully run-stuffing 3-4 DEs aren’t all that pricey/sexy in comparison.

by quincyyyyy on May 20, 2008 6:19 PM CDT   0 recs

well...

this will finally put to bed those silly MB3 and T-New are leaving after this year rumors….

this also reaffirms that MB3’s contract demands weren’t outrageous….he pretty much got the money he was looking for….

this also reaffirms something that i hate to admit…drew rosenhaus is damn good at his job….

this should also make people think twice about complaining about players asking for more money when they’ve already signed a contract….the owners had a contract….a binding contract…guess what? they opted out of it….

i’m very pleased with the MB3 signing. he’s only been a spectacular player for us and beat out a back many of us thought was the back of the future…..he works hard, keeps his nose clean and is a great teammate….i’m glad we have him and I’m glad he got paid…

Also no doubt

that Rosenhaus did a great job for Barber. A lot of agents couldn’t have got him that money, though I don’t think it’s unfair. He’s proven more than Turner, so he should get paid more (BTW, that Turner/Ryan backfield in ATL is pretty pricey!)

I can see the shift in emphasis towards the running game, what do y'all think

Which is going to give the offense a more balanced attack. Take some pressure off Romo, and the passing game.
1) Houck is back
2) Locked up Barber
3) Drafted 2 really good rookies, and picked up a nice UDFA in Lattimore
4) Locked up Adams, to go along with Gurode and Bigg
5) Drafted Free and Marten last year, should give us good depth
6) Now have 2 TE’s who can block and also beat most LB’s in coverage
7) I think McQ will be able to beat out Kosier with Houck’s coaching, that’s going to give Dallas one of the biggest O-lines in the league.
8) Cricket looks like the best true FB we’ve had since Moose

Just my 2 cents

by APerfectStar on May 20, 2008 10:00 PM CDT   0 recs

I totally disagree

Even though we drafted Jones and Choice, the Cowboys will always be a passing team first and foremost so long as Garrett is the OC and Romo is the QB.

I’m just hoping our running game is more successful than last season in terms of yds per carry.

And I'm hoping Tom's mention of Houck returning...

... means the Cowboys will bring back the effective type of run blocking that Dallas consistently executed during the Triplets era.

I’d love to see Bigg pullin’ more on sweeps a la Larry Allen.

Maybe I should have been clearer

I don’t think the Cowboys are going to emphasize the run over the pass. I just meant the offense will be more balanced between rushing and passing. It’s fun to watch Romo light up the opponents, but at the same time, the team needs to be able to rely on the running game. Even the Patriots ran the ball more than Dallas last year.
