good evaluation by Scott Wright.....
he was right on with this statement -
the Cowboys have a lot of depth at outside linebacker and unless he really impresses the best Walden can probably hope for is a third-string spot on the depth chart and he could even be a candidate for the practice squad as a developmental guy. Also, it’s hard to label someone who was a 6th round pick as “a reach” but it doesn’t sound like many teams had Walden graded as a draftable prospect
I’m still scratching my head over this pick.

I figure that we really wanted him and we didn't want to risk him going
to another team in UFA.

I think that's right
Personally I hope every GM laughs it up so that we can stash him on the PS.

I don't know about Walden either, but
I have no problem with a 6th rounder at OLB. We have three guys at OLB: Ware, Ellis and Spencer. I think that fourth guy is important. Ellis is year to year and it will take a late rounder a couple of years to develop. I imagine 4 OLB’s will make the team this year – so that fourth guy should have the upside to someday play.

I think Walden will make the team as an ILB
we are going to need another one of those soon. Burnett and Thomas won’t be here that much longer.

Wright also lists Walden
As one of the Top Reaches in the draft.
I think Darrell Robertson from GT will make it as the 4th OLB.

Really?
Can a 6th round guy really be a top reach? Especially on a team that was already loaded with talent and depth? Who did he think we should have taken in the 6th that was a lock to make the team over this guy? I can’t think of a single position where we needed someone that was available in the 6th over who we already have.

Who was available?
Some safety depth would be nice, but I doubt anyone that was available in the 6th would beat out Watkins or Ball.

3 guys I can think of off the top of my head
Rubin, NT
Corey Lynch, S (could play SS or FS)
Peyton Hillis, FB
Those guys could have more likely competed for a roster spot
I don’t know anything about Walden, except he wasn’t listed in any draft guides or sites I was using to follow the draft. It doesn’t mean he definitely won’t make the team, but if he does, then one of our scouts deserves some bonus money.

They don't have a need at any of those positions.
If they were going to carry 2 FBs or 3 NTs, they would have kept Hoyte and Ferguson. They’re set with their safety depth since Hamlin and Williams will start and Watkins and Brown are backups. If Roy gets hurt, Hamlin will move to SS and Watkins will come in at FS. That’s not to mention all of the other DBs that we are carrying, especially if Pacman gets reinstated.

Disagree Soup
I could make the same argument that Dallas has Justin Rogers, Khari Long, and a couple other guys at OLB. So that negates a need for OLB. It comes down to the draft rankings, and Walden was not even on the chart. Like I said, he might make it, but he’s a longer shot than the guys I mentioned.

You'd think
but the team seems to be really high on both Watkins and Brown. They also had to realize that there was no way that he would make the team. It’s going to be tough for any 6th round pick to make this team. They didn’t go 13-3 for no reason, this is a very talented and deep roster, as shown by the fact that they produced that record in spite of the fact that there were several injuries at key positions.

I'm actually alright with Walden if he gets moved to ILB
but I thought we wasted a fourth round pick on Choice. We could have easily picked someone up in UFA to compete with Coleman for the 3rd spot.

you won’t think that pick was a waste anymore

Please do.
I’m still failing to understand how a marginal guy at any of those positions is less of a reach than the marginal guy that we picked.
At best, any of those guys would be a long shot to make the team, so I’m going to go ahead and trust the scouts and coaches to pick out the guy that they think has the best chance out of that group. The Cowboys consider themselves set at safety for this year, they’re not going to carry 2 fullbacks or they would have kept Hoyte, they would have kept Ferguson if they wanted more depth at NT, but they have 2 NTs with Tank and Ratliff, who they just paid big money, they’re happy with their depth on the OL, and a receiver with poor speed and quickness plus an injury history is as much a reach as anyone. At OLB or ILB, the Cowboys clearly thought Walden was a better pick for what they need than an injured D3 guy who is just an internet sensation.

I'm not gonna bother.....what's done is done....If he doesn't make the team..It was a poor selection...
