Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Could Roy Williams be cut sooner than expected?

The situation with Roy this off season has been a little fishy.  First he gets all testy and defensive like he always does, and went even further than he ever has and called out the fans.  Then he gets pulled into the "principal's office" to talk about his situation with the Dallas Cowboys.  After that you would expect him to be at OTA's.  Instead he is on a "family vacation" supposedly.  Come June first could Roy be a goner?

Pat Watkins

Looks like Pat Watkins is improving.. I like it!!

“I know where everybody’s supposed to be now. It’s beneficial, helping me out a lot,” said Watkins, who picked off quarterback Richard Bartel during team drills right after deflecting a Brad Johnson pass. “I also like it because we get to cover the tight ends one-on-one. If you go against a good tight end, you’ve got a good chance of getting a lot of PBU’s (pass breakups) and interceptions.”

Looks like we have been trying him at SS also
Safety Net
A team-first guy, Pat Watkins naturally wants the entire Cowboys secondary on the field for these voluntary OTA practices. But with Roy Williams missing Wednesday’s session because of a prior commitment and Ken Hamlin yet to sign his one-year, $4.396 million franchise tag, the bulk of the safety snaps belong to Watkins for now.

“I’m not complaining,” laughed the slender third-year safety, who has added a noticeable five pounds of muscle this off-season.

Watkins has played strictly free safety since coming to Dallas as a fourth-round pick in 2006, starting nine games as a rookie before Hamlin’s arrival last year. He’s now learning strong safety duties, too, which would make him a more versatile reserve with Keith Davis gone to the Miami Dolphins.

That would be great if Watkins could step up and replace Roy.

really doesn't matter FS or SS

they both are interchangeable in today’s NFL, the reason Roy Williams is a dinosaur. Both positions have to be cover guys. Might as well throw out that designation because it doesn’t fit anymore.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on May 22, 2008 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

actually that's incorrect

interchangeabe in the fact both have to be able to cover, but strong safety has to be able to come up and support the run more than a free safety, Watkins doesn’t have the ability to play the strong side since he’s not a banger, so he wont support the run as much and the way he tackles, he’l be more likely paralized.

If Watkins is such a horrible tackler,

then why did he lead the team in special teams tackles last year, which a lot of times are open field tackles on the other teams most elusive players?

and the extra muscle he put on in the off season should help as well.

And besides

Ham is more of a safety tweener anyway, he could switch over to SS easily.

I've always been a fan of P-Wat.

I hope he can replace Roy too.

I’m actually kind of glad that he and Hamlin aren’t in here right now. It’s giving the two young guys a lot of reps, and they’re responding. I think we all know that Roy isn’t the future for this team, so I’m glad we’re getting a look at who might be. Hopefully this play isn’t just a shorts thing, and this level continues once camp and the preseason start.

The earliest Roy will be released will be next year. Now this year his play on the field might be cut if these younger guys step up, but theres no way hes getting cut during 08.

Why do you always post questions like this?

1st it was a poll on if the Cowboys should trade Newman before this season, then it was a suggestion that we could trade Anthony Henry during training camp, now you want to know if it’s a good idea to cut Roy after June 1st. The answer is no. Just like it was to your other ideas. This team is loaded for a Superbowl run, we aren’t going to trade Roy or cut Roy . Coaches Campo and Maxie are committed to give him as much help as he needs and he has been working out during the off-season to shed weight to help him in coverage. If he can’t revert to the Roy of his first two seasons, then he’s probably gone next off-season, but not until then. And it wasn’t all the fans he spoke out against, just fans like you.

I’m all for keeping the conversation going, but to me, this goes to the same point as pondering EVERY free agent that becomes available as a possible pick up for the Cowboys.

by Impatient on May 22, 2008 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow

Fans like him? You mean fans who think he’s been overpaid for the last two years? The fans who think he went SOFT as soon as he signed his HUGE contract? I like the guy, just not as a football player.

by ChrisRichey on May 22, 2008 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, fans that are screaming for him to be cut

Fans that blame all our defensive problems on the guy.

Nobody is blaming him for our loss to the Giants are they?

The fact is, Roy is not playing up to his contract, and his recent statements have been disheartening for fans. I would give him one more year, then either restructure his contract or cut him if he continues to play the same. You should not need to take your Pro Bowl SS off the field in passing situations, that is ridiculous. If he’s going to be a role player, then he needs to be paid like one.

by ChrisRichey on May 22, 2008 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm just hoping he can return to his previous form

I feel like for all he’s done for the team, he deserves one more season to prove he’s still a playmaker. If he can’t do it this season, then even I concede he’s probably not going to be in Dallas in 2009.

Everybody is a critic

Its just food for thought, no need to get snippy.

Not snippy

Just posting my response, no need to get testy and defensive. You’re the guy who made the fanpost, expect some feedback.

NO Need

NO Reason to trade or Cut any of 13 Pro-Bowlers. We had a better roster then super bowl champs last year and our roster has improved.
