Roy Was Right You Know
First a disclaimer. I am an admitted Roy Williams fan and have been since his Oklahoma days. I was overjoyed that he became a Dallas Cowboy. I own two of his jersies, etc. etc. With that being said, I wonder like many of you what has happened to "The Hammer". Lots of theories abound on this blog and the media in general. No one but Roy really knows for sure. And if it's going to get turned around, only Roy can do it. Campo and the other coaches might help, but in the end it's going to be Roy.
What troubles me is Roy is taking a lot of heat for his comments about how quickly fans will turn their backs on you when you're down. Football fans in general, and as much as it pains me to say it, some Cowboy Fans, can be as fickle as junior high scholl girls. It just amazes me that people can castigate a player for telling the awful truth. It's not like it's a big secret or anything. Probably most NFL veterans feel the same way. And if they do, we have ourselves to blame. Yeah, I know they make a ton of money and according to some with that should come "thick skin". They are also human. Give the guy a break. We all will know by the end of this season if the old Roy is back. If he truly has lost his heart for the game, he will know it before any of us. Is this a Pollyanna/Rose Colored Glasses view of the game on my part? Maybe so. I also disagree with the home crowd booing their own team.

For god sakes how long has Roy been a Cowboy?
like 6 years. And how long has he been sucking? Almost 3 years. Up until the end of last year I was rooting for the guys. But seriously I just had it. If sticking it out for three years, waiting for him not to suck makes me fickle then I don’t know what to tell you.
What even worse is he is getting paid a boat load and he is not making any effort what so ever to improve. Even worse its almost like he is trying to be lazy and a brat. He doesn’t work out with the rest of the team, he skips OTA’s for a vacation, and he calls out his fans and teammates (such as finger pointing on the field).
There is only so much a fan can take. I respect and root for anyone who in turn respects the star. Admittedly, I wasn’t a big Felix Jones before the draft as many people know. But after he was drafted he made such glowing declarations of his love for the Cowboys that I made a 180 degree turn, and I am now one of his biggest supporters. The problem is Roy doesn’t have love and passion for the Cowboys or football in general, so I see no reason why I should give him any love.
I wasn't saying his play hasn't deteriorated
It clearly has. As you say over the last three years. The question is why. How did the switch get flipped off? To my knowledge he hasn’t been hurt (physically at least). Is it a mental thing? Should he put all his change in his left pocket, tie his left shoe in a double knot? ( See Tin Cup). The whole point of my post was just about people getting on him for speaking the truth about fan loyalty. As loyal a fan as I am of him and the Cowboys, this year is clearly important for him to reestablish his reputation. If he feels he can’t do it, he should do the right thing and walk away.
Candy is dandy but sex won't rot your teeth.
So he can suck for 3 years, not go to practices, not workout with his teammates,
and blame others for his mistakes and not supporting him after all that makes me an unloyal fan? Do you think maybe Roy is the problem and not the fans? Do you think Roy is not being loyal to the team? If Roy does not show this organization respect then don’t expect the fans to show him any respect either.
I disagree
If he had only had one bad season, I don’t think any of us would be this hard on him. 2 tough years is frustrating, but going on 3 years is a trend. The thing is, it’s NEVER Roy’s fault, it’s always somebody else’s blown assignment. Yes, he has to cover for others’ mistakes, but he doesn’t take responsibility for ANYTHING.
And Roy makes it worse
with all his excuses and poorly timed comments. First Parcells held him back, then he lost weight and would be faster, then he didn’t understand the defense now he’s lost weight again etc. Then in interviews he says winning a super bowl would be nice but charity work is his passion and then he chides the fans for not supporting him.
All I can say is “Roy, walk your talk or get the hell out of Dallas!!!” I don’t want to hear one more thing come out of his mouth, I want to see improved play on the football field.
And Far Rider, I guarantee everyone on this blog loved watching Roy play during the first part of his career, myself included. I was a little let down three years ago with his play but had faith it was just a hiccup. Then I was worried two years ago but figured maybe a new coach would do him good. Then last year I was just about disgusted and the only thing he had going for him was that he was a Cowboy. After his behavior and comments this offseason the only thing that will make me think he isn’t a useless turd is a season of high level play followed by him keeping his mouth shut.
Billito out!
I will say this
We are hard on Roy because he has set a high level of expectations. I know Pro Bowls are a joke in some ways, and I know that opposing offenses target him, but if Roy got cut by Dallas, he would be signed in a second, probably by a NFC rival. He can contribute and help, but he can’t make dominant plays anymore, and that’s a tough pill for both player and fans to swallow. My hunch is that he is a good enough football player to adjust to his changed abilities and the team’s needs for him.
I have sympathy for Roy, but at the same time I don’t. Fans are impatient and this is a good example of that. As long as he shows he’s not believing his own hype, working hard, and helping his team, the fans will welcome him back with open arms.
Hopefully an NFC East rival!
I’d love to see Witten go against Roy 2-3 times a year.
Roy used to be my favorite Cowboy, but this wasn’t just 1 bad season. Instead of improving each year, he is getting worse. I don’t mind a few blown coverages when you are otherwise making plays and striking fear in your opponents, but he never seems to make the big play anymore.
I used to always tell people that he was the man in the red zone, because – A:he couldn’t get toasted deep on our side and teams don’t throw deep that often from their side, and B: he always seemed to force fumbles and get interceptions inside our 20, or sacks and tackles for loss inside theirs. That’s been a few years, though. You know, maybe he’s another James Washington or George Teague who’s value/ability seemed higher because he played opposite Woodson.
I’m rambling, but man, he used to be my favorite, and now he kind of sucks. That’s not bandwagon, that’s the way it is. I’ve been wishing for a few years that he would return to form, but now he’s sniping at the media and fans because he either can’t or won’t play better and they are noticing. I’m not throwing my 31’s away, but they haven’t been worn in a while and I have no plans to buy a 38.

Yeah! Shame on you dudes
For booing a guy that gets burnt beyond recognition far too often! Shame on you for turning against a guy who instead of wrapping around a players legs tries to go for the hard hit and thus gives up easy yards. You know you should be ashamed of yourself everytime you see an opposing player throw a long bomb and you whisper “Man I hope Roy isn’t the one covering the receiver”
And really, do any of you junior high girls really think it’s right to criticize a guy who still breaks a rule three years later that was named after him? C’mon now! Be real fans and support the player, no matter how overrated they are and how much they suck!
After all, who do you think you are…Philly fans?
lovely
One of our 5 time pro-bowlers is working hard in the off-season to get ready- Losing weight, trying new training techniques, and fans can’t wait to line-up to take a shot..
Roy isn’t going anywhere, he will be here next season making plays, and helping the team win. All of your whining about him in coverage will be taken care of by smart play calling. He will be great in run support, the guy had 90 tackles last year, he was doing something right.
"Why everything that's supposed to be bad, Make me feel so good?"
Was a majority of his 90 tackles in coverage or in run support
Roy has a lot of tackles like a bad corner has a lot of tackles.
If you look at his stats from last season some of his worst games (like the first Giants and first redskins game) had high tackle totals, even though he played rather poorly in those games.
To further my point, if he was truly making plays in the run game you would expect him to have at least one tackle for a loss. He had none, nor did he have any sacks.
If we do, god forbid, keep him for the upcoming season he is going to see the bench a lot, so I doubt he’ll contribute much to us winning games.

Probowl is an overrated stat
and having to use smart-playing only confirms he sucks in coverage. He can’t cover and he’s no longer feared except when he tackles from behind.
wrong
I watched the game and the NFL replay of the Giants game and Shockey caught a fair amount of passes on K. Hamlin. He 9 tackles in 3 other games and no TE had over 60 yds or a TD.
"Why everything that's supposed to be bad, Make me feel so good?"
Roy
He Is no cover safety we know that, but he is great in run support, and he will help our team win.
"Why everything that's supposed to be bad, Make me feel so good?"
Then if he is so great
why did this happen? Maybe you should tell the secondary coaches how good he is.

He is getting Mentally ready for the Upcoming Season..
"Why everything that's supposed to be bad, Make me feel so good?"
Who's going to replace him.
I guarantee you there is no one better we can get. He’s still one of the top safetys in the nfc. The first time pat watkins gets run over everyones going to be like, wow wish we would’ve stuck with Roy. Now I agree, man..does he get burned on occasion. I think he would’ve been a lot better on Coverage if it wasn’t for reeves being the epitome of garbage. The mans got talent, I say atleast give him this last year to prove what he’s got. If not, by all means get rid of the guy. There’s no excuses this year.
Plain and Simple, we lose more than we gain if we get rid of him, by far.
Michael Irvin to Keyshawn Johnson "I know where me and Rice belong on the top ten receivers of all time list, but who do you have in the bottom 8?"
+1
I think we are better team with Roy that’s all. His position has evolved dramtically in the recent years, limiting his snaps.
His contract is steep for a part time safety, it will be up to management to figure that out, but for him the football player we can use him and he will be effective.

I'll ignore your ad hominem
I don’t care to get into a childish back and forth. Anyhoo…
He’s still one of the top safetys in the nfc.
You honestly believe that?
How very adult of you
After mocking anyone who defends Roy
I think he’s still one of the top SS in the NFC. You can down play his 90+ tackles all you want, but the truth is, he would be the starter on almost any team. There is no depth at that position already, why would you cut him. I don’t see him as a big liability, but I will admit I would like to see him make those bone jarring hits on players coming across the middle more often. I’ll chalk it up to a down year (he still made the Pro Bowl) caused by 1)the increased media and fan criticism, 2)a friggin rule named after him 3)fitting into a new defense.
I’m willing to believe he can improve his performance this year, if he doesn’t he might have to be let go. But I don’t see the point of constantly bashing him on a Cowboys fansite like this. What do you hope to gain, except baiting people into arguments?

Easy to say we can't get anyone better now
But we could have on draft day. And Roy doesn’t get run over, he whacks the ball-carrier, who then brushes Roy off and continues to run for 10+yards
+2 just let the guy play.,...they aren't growing viable replacements on tree's nowadayz...
with the upgrades at the CB position….I think it will greatly decrease the probability of Roy being placed in a position or on an island deep trying to help out a burnt(Reeves) CB that was already playing 10 yards off the line…...this is his last chance to redeem himself…..

Sorry but I am still a Roy Williams fan
Of course I have never gone against the grain here before (smile).
But there are 32 coaches every year that select the Pro Bowl players. If Roy is so bad then why do those 32 coaches keep returning him to the Pro Bowl? (Yes, I know you can’t vote for your own player so 31).
1. They are too lazy to go by anything but reputation
2. They are convinced that putting Roy in the Pro Bowl is good for the game.
3. They have to study hours of game film on Roy and scheme around him to keep him from making those high impact plays. So they, far better than we, are in the place of judgment.
I am of the #3 persuasion. Roy is not perfect. He was better in coverage before the NFL outlawed hand checking and other time-honored skills that defensive backs used. Now any back gets burned. The best cornerbacks do not give up many touchdowns because there are easier teammates for the offense to throw against. But they can all be burned now. It is essential that the defense get to the QB. Pressure and sacks change the game as attested by NYG last year. No cover skills? No problem if you have three monster pass rushers.
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."
I Rest My Case
At least I know I’m not alone in voting for him..
Candy is dandy but sex won't rot your teeth.
Does anyone know if there's any detailed breakdown of how the voting works?
I know I’d be very interested to see the coach/player votes for the pro bowl generally. I’m sure Roy gets a lot of fan votes (all Cowboys do because Dallas has the most fans (or close to it), and he has been a yearly pro bowler and those things generate momentum).
That said, I don’t think Roy is as bad as most of you guys do. I can’t name many SS in the NFC that I know to be better than him. Frankly, if he’s not better than the #3 safety on our current depth chart, he’s not going to be on the field much next year. Give Campo a chance with Roy. It’s too early to give up on him, and the secondary around him has improved a lot. If the CBs get burned less, Roy has an easier job in help coverage.
and players, who also make up a third of the vote...
IF Sean Taylor wasn’t killed…Roy would not have made the Pro Bowl…simple as that….but….You can’t name 3 better Strong Safeties in the NFC….....They are a dying breed for sure…..You need two Free Safeties nowadayz….Anthony Henry, Mike Jenkins, Pat Watkins, or Courtney Brown all would be worthy of a spot back there in the near future….I’m rooting for Mike Jenkins to become a Free Safety, and if Hamlin isn’t resigned long term, you can bet that Dallas is thinking he’s the eventual long term solution ...nickle or dime packages…or outright starter in a few seasons if indeed Henry goes back there after this season….....IF Pacman ever decides to get his act together, and gets reinstated, I’m certain he’ll become the #2 starter opposite #1 Newman, not Jenkins…Scandrick will eventually become #3, maybe Ball or Oglesby #4 and #5

Here's My Problem
I’ve only been following football since 1995. I chose the Cowboys as my team and I will never root for another. I was spoiled on one Darren Woodson. Woody could do it all. He and Roy were a formidable force in the backfield because Roy could play the run and stalk the line and Woody was great in pass coverage. I really think Roy lost a lot of confidence once Woody retired. He relied on him that much. I have always wished he would return to the Cowboys as an assistant coach. His leadership and experience would be invaluable. He is up for the HOF I think and rightly so. He should be in the the Ring Of Honor as well.
Candy is dandy but sex won't rot your teeth.
Woody learned the FS position, and eventually became very good in coverage....
There is no excuse for Roy not being able to pick up the teachings of our secondary coaches….unless he’s simply not committed to getting better…..Darren Woodson started out as an undersized OLB and worked his way to All Pro…........how bout you Roy ? got it in you ?
My guess is no…..you already have the money…why not just ride out this unimportant part of your life…..go preach somewhere or wake up and snap back into reality my man….

We'll see
Respect is a big motivator in sports. Roy hasn’t really been criticized that harshly en masse until this offseason. We’ll see how he reacts. I’m sure it hurts him, but it may also be his wake-up call.
