Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Surprise, surprise surprise!!!!

Greg Ellis is upset again.  DMN has a story about it here: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/football/cowboys/stories/052908dnspoellislede.3e6cf92.html

Now he's saying he isn't coming back to the OTA's till her gets more reps, says he doesn't "trust" the teams motives.  I bet some more money would increase that trust, eh?  It never seems to stop with this guy.  He's a heck of a player but I'm thinking that after he retires we'll hear that he has some sort of "complex" or something.

Yawn

Actually, I was sympathetic last year. He was getting old and insecure because the Cowboys drafted his replacement. Well, one year should have been enough time to come to terms with it.

It’s a young man’s league, and Ellis needs to shut his piehole and practice.

What would spring be without greg Ellis whining about something

This week it’s reps, next week, Greg will be saying he isn’t respect by the cowboys, Meaning, I need more money!!! His act is certainly getting tired….

MAN

Can we trade him for Jason Taylor straight up? I’ll even throw in a 7th rounder. Taylor just wants to be on a winning team.. That’s us..

I have been thinking this for quite some time....Wm

I’d love nothing more than for us to trade for Jason Taylor….He’s MUCH better than Ellis….Tuna OWES us big time too for all those sweetheart deals we gave him…..I actually thought something was gonna go down during the draft when we were giving Miami all those ,IMO ,one sided trades…...Ellis and a late rounder seems fair enough for me…..Do it Jerry….I’m tired of Ellis….

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."

I Defended Roy Last Week...

So I’ll jump in for Greg this week. I don’t think anyone would argue he is one of our most valuable defensive players and has been since he became a starter. By all accounts he is also a mighty worry wart. He is also extremely honest, almost to a fault. He will express his concerns for his future without thought of how it’s going to be perceived. I wouldn’t worry about Greg Ellis for a minute not being there when it counts.

Just like...

He was there when it counted last year? NOT! Unless the games didn’t start counting until he had $2 million more thrown his way. This team will be much better using Ellis strictly as a pass rusher. Spencer is turning into a fine linebacker, and he is having trouble dealing with that. Instead of helping and encouraging the young guy as a veteran and leader should, he’s being childish and selfish. I’m real excited to see Spencer get more reps. I think he’s going to be a stud in coverage.

Correction Or Two

Greg Ellis has been nothing but supportive of Spencer and his development. It is well documented.
He also is looking out for himself, albeit a bit too much in the public eye in my opinion. Jerry Jones gladly gave Greg his equivalent of that insurance policy. I would assume Jerry Jones knows just a tad more than we do concerning his players. And how best to spend his money.

If he's so good about being supportive,

then why is he whining because the young guy is getting some extra reps. If he’s the team player everyone makes him out to be, he’d see that playing on obvious pass downs is where he has the most value.

by Mandmeisterx on May 29, 2008 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

not if he thinks he's the better

all around player and will help the team more as a starter than a situational pass rusher.

Bottom line is that Spencer’s game isn’t quite there yet and Ellis has 1 or 2 good years left in him. To me, he’s the superior player right now.

Ellis also has played the position more than a season.

The fact is, we haven’t had a chance to see what this kid can do. He’s getting some reps with Ellis not being there, and he’s been impressing people. No one is denying that Ellis might be the better player, but they both can bring you different things, so why not take advantage of that. Ellis has that great first step and can get to the QB. Spencer is younger and a little more athletic, so why not get him in coverage and out in space making plays against the run. Beyond that, it’s not like Ellis can play forever. Why not start preparing yourself for life without him.

“Instead of helping and encouraging the young guy as a veteran and leader should, he’s being childish and selfish.”

Spot On. I find Greg Ellis’ behavior completely disgusting, petty, unprofessional and as you aptly stated, childish.

I used to really like Greg Ellis. Now, the first thought that comes to my mind is What A Loser.

Enough is enough

For the third year in a row Greg is whining. I was with him the first year and understood his concerns. I was even sympathetic last year and was glad Jerry ponied up the cash. But this year? It’s enough already. Greg, shut the hell up and play or retire. I say if he wants more reps, put him on the field and run his ass until he so tired he wont have the energy to complain. Once the season starts, everytime he complains sit him on the bench and point out that “Spencer is in the game because we are tired of you whining like a teenage girl”.
Seriously Greg, I love you man, but enough is enough. You are getting older, face it. And the team is protecting itself from the day you’ll be too old to go anymore. It’s a business as is exampled by the rather large checks you get to cash. So just shut and play or retire.

The greatest two yard run ever!

Chill out guys its not a big deal

Ellis is a team player and he’ll help us win a superbowl. Just ignore him in the off season. That is what I do.

by quincyyyyy on May 29, 2008 1:41 PM CDT reply actions

well said quinc

Ellis likes to whine, its part of who he is, however, its all harmless babble and the Cowboys know that.

When the season starts, he’ll be our starter at OLB opposite Ware and he’ll be a big part of us winning the SB.

Greg needs to understand

that he is a player, not a coach. Nobody is going to bench him if he is the superior player but he needs to shut up and lift weights and let the coaches figure out how to maximize the talent on the roster.

by Billito on May 29, 2008 3:13 PM CDT reply actions

It's all about money

Does Ellis really think the Cowboys are going to cut him? The guy put up 12 sacks last season. Say what you want to about Wade being soft, but I think he’s a straight shooter. If he says unequivocally “Greg Ellis is the starter” then there’s no reason to doubt it. Say what you want about Jerry, but he’s shown Ellis he’ll pay him fairly to make those plays. He’s in no danger of being benched. That excuse is total BS. Ellis is a well known worry wort, but this time there is nothing to be worried about, except how much more money he can squeeze out of Jerry.
