The real reason we didn't draft a WR
I think we want to give our 3rd year guys a shot first. As any fantasy owner will tell you, year 3 is usually a WRs breakout year and between Hurd and Austin they have a chance. Jerry also believes TGlenn will be back as well. And the biggest reason? We need to spend money on TO; and Roy Williams and TJ Houshmanzedah are both FAs next year. We can't spend big money on 3 WRs..........

Plus Stanback, too
but you’re exactly right. WR is a long term development position. Wade said this very explicitly in his press conference. All three of their developing WRs have a better chance of making a contribution this year than any that they could have drafted. So they filled in their passing game through a tall, athletic TE and a versatile RB who can line up in the slot.

plus all Jerry's second day trading got us a bucket load of draft picks next year
that we can use to either trade for a veteran or trade up for a draft pick since next year’s draft is much richer in WR.

Agree
There was no one in this draft that could make an impact better then someone who already is on the team and knows the system. Plus theres more value next year with the vet WRs becoming FAs

Austin will not be in our future plans....and Hurd will never be more than a 4th WR
Stanback is the only hope out of our young receivers…and I see him making great strides this year…..possibly starting if Glenn can’t go…

I think Hurd could become our number 3
He’s a very, very hard worker and has the ability to catch the ball over others. His hands are nice and sticky., but he could take advantage of smaller CBs or defenders who play him too loose. He may not ever create enough separation to be more than that.

He could be the vertical threat
if Glenn can’t play this year, and Austin hasn’t learned to catch the ball more consistently. He was definitely drafted in the 4th round to do more than just sit on the bench or be the 3rd or 4th WR. I’m not saying he secures the #2 spot this season, but I hope he starts looking like he could.

As down as I was on Austin...
... at the end of the regular season, I’m actually changing my tune now.
First of all, like emmitt22 stated, year 3 is usually the breakout year for most WRs (I’ve played FF for over 10 years myself) and if Austin could’ve hung on to both well-thrown Romo passes against Washington in Wk 17, they could have gone for long TDs. I mean, the kid can flat-out fly. He’s got some jets.
Not dropping passes is a coachable thing and I believe that he could make an impact this upcoming season. In fact, you heard it here… this will be Miles Austin’s coming out party. I wholeheartedly believe - goin’ out on a limb here (which i don’t usually do) - that Austin’s gonna make some plays and do some damage against opposing defenses.
I’m pullin’ for the guy.

sorry guy....but you can't teach "good hands" and "concentration" or lack there of...
I’m not saying he can’t improve…..but he’s not any better than our 6th WR…..and with several free agents in camp this year that have better hands, run better routes, and are less expensive…...sure thing his Cowboys career is hanging on a thread…

There's another receiver that couldn't catch once upon a time...
TO was bashed in SF for his inability to hold onto the ball in big situations. NOW I KNOW he still drops a lot of passes, but he clearly catches enough to be a huge asset for this team. You can absolutely teach good hands. There’s a limit, of course, but if you make a guy catch 500 balls a day out of a throwing machine or something, his hands are going to get better. Austin knows his hands have to improve. I suspect he’s been working on it.

i hope your right, if he hasn't spent all off season trying to improve, it's going to show come camp time........but we are still talking about our 6th WR.....
He certainly hasn’t stopped our team for looking for a proven vet….or stopping them from praising this urfa from texas tech….It’s just my personal belief that Austin will not make this roster….He doesn’t have “it” ......time will tell…

It's a reasonable belief
Competition is a good thing, and I hope Austin is smart enough to know that he is going to have to show something to make the team now that he isn’t in by default as the kick returner. We shall see. It’s good that we have a bunch of guys that could step up to fill that role. We only need 1 or 2 to pan out. Good situation to be in.

Well, the situation just didn't come along
Do you draft one over Jones or Jenkins? No receiver was a value at that spot, as evidenced by EVERY SINGLE WR sliding to round 2. And by the time our second selection came around, the best receiver left didn’t get taken until the late 3rd (Manningham). Anyone we took after that would not be any more potentially impactful than Hurd, Stanback, or Austin.

Agreed...
The talent in this draft class wasn’t very good to begin with, and then you look at the fact that 6 or 8 of those guys came off the board in the early/mid 2nd, and it just didn’t make sense for the Cowboys to reach for need.
That’s why getting Martellus Bennett was a great pick, IMO… You lose out on a receiver, but you fstill give yourself more options in the passing game with Bennett and Witten both on the line, or one out in the slot in 3 and 4 WR sets… Not to mention Bennett’s upside potential is higher than any receiver from this draft class…

Odds are better that we keep Austin rather than Hurd.
Another thing you can’t teach is speed, and Austin has that big time over Hurd. With Amendola being a good route runner and Wes Welker clone, I say he beats out Hurd. They’ll take Glenn, TO, Crayton, Amendola, Austin and Stanback.
They also have a better chance of stashing Hurd on the practice squad rather than Austin since speed always attracts lots of attention from other teams.
Bottom line is that they go into training camp, and whoever looks best between these two stays and the other one goes, but I’d have to give the edge to Austin at this point due to the reasons listed above.

Not sure about that, Valainferno...
With all due respect, Hurd has had experience proving that he can make plays on the field as a WR and as a special teamer. So they do know he’s proven.
Now how he does in TC & the preseason—in competition with the other WR bodies will be pivotal.
I absolutely cannot wait til then!!!
I do love Austin’s speed (as U well mentioned above), however. Now, if he could just catch the ball more consistently…

Hurd is not eligible for practice squad
He has already been on the active roster for too many games I believe…. I am very excited about Stanbeck as well, but he is probably a year away from really contributing on offense.

That may be right, I forgot about that rule.
I’m pretty certain that TO, Glenn, Stanback, and Crayton are all going to be on the 53. I think they keep, at most, 6 receivers which leaves 2 spots for Amendola, Hurd and Crayton. I also wonder what incentive the coaches and Jerry would have to sing Amendola’s praises at camp if they don’t intend to put him on the roster. Some other team will pick him up if he doesn’t make our roster. It seems to me you’d want to keep quite if you were unsure about whether he could beat out Hurd or Austin so that you could put him on the practice squad.
So, assuming the coaches and Jerry have some common sense (a bit of a leap, I know), I think it comes down to Hurd and Austin for that last spot. If one performs marginally better than the other, then its an easy decision to make, but I think speed will be the tie breaker if its a push in performance at training camp.

Amendola would have been claimed anyway
There’s not much reason for them to be coy about him; he was pursued by at least 8 other teams as a UDFA if memory serves, so someone would probably snatch him up. I think the talk about Amendola is a) genuine delight and b) a message to guys like Hurd and Austin.

Practice Squad
Who ever gets cut will not make it to the practice squad. We had to both on Hurd and Austin on the active roster there rookie year because they would have gotten snatched up then. so there is no way now. Amendola has drawn too much attention too. So who ever the odd man out will be playing for someone else come Week 1..
I just hope TGlenn doesn’t take up a roster spot and then can’t get healthy.

T glenn
I think if Terry Glenn is not 100% by the start of training camp we will put him on the PUP list for the first 6 weeks. Then we can keep the other 6 receivers and cut whoever in’t contributing if Glenn is able to come back. Otherwise it is definitely between Hrd, Austin and Amendola for the last 2 spots. We all know TO, Glenn, Crayton and Stanbeck will be on the roster….....

Just be thankful for TO’s productivity while it lasts. I’m sorry, but the chances of Hurd, Stanback, or Austin developing into a longterm answer at WR is about the same as the Eagles suddenly finding answers at WR already on their roster. Not going to happen.

I am glad to hear the Cowboys are not actively pursuing Chris Henry. Signing him would just be over the top in terms of recent additions with character issues and would probably cause the Cowboys to lose some respect around the league.
