Ellis opens his big trap about Roy Williams
Ellis said Williams first expressed concerns about the Phillips 3-4 during training camp in San Antonio.
"He said, 'Greg, this defense does not fit me. I don't fit in well with this defense at all,'" Ellis said. "So when he told me that, I was like, 'Well, man, it's still new. Get used to it and it'll probably be fine for you.'" And obviously I think it came to be true. Just like he said, he doesn't fit what's going on here in Dallas right now...
Ellis went on to say that he was bothered by the way Williams has isolated himself from his teammates. He said Williams is still working out at Valley Ranch, but he's leaving the facility by 7:30 a.m., so he's not spending any time with his teammates.Ellis said he thinks Williams wants to stay in Dallas, but it's just a bad football fit.

This is getting absurd. I doubt Roy will get any better than he is now. He is almost 28 and it is very doubtful he'll miraculously improve. Its time to cut our losses and kick this guy to the curb. I believe if we cut him after June 1st his cap hit will be spread out over next year and this year. Seems like it would be a good time to do it. Maybe then we can move Hamlin to SS and have Watkins or Brown at FS.

The article tomorrow will be about Greg Ellis
the source, Roy Williams stating how Greg Ellis feels disrespected again this year and it would be better for him to be cut since dallas keeps drafting linebackers to take his spot… Gee, haven’t heard that story before…..

His play was slipping before Wade
Perhaps Roy’s responsibility does differ significantly in this defense, but I haven’t really noticed it. I feel like if there are big differences, they were designed to play to Roy’s strengths. I guess not. He wasn’t playing great in Parcells’ last year here.
As for Ellis, I am beyond caring about whether he feels disrespected. Shut up or retire Greg, nobody cares about whether you feel disrespected/underpaid anymore. You’re getting old and do nothing but complain about your contract, so is it any wonder why they draft linebackers? Is Erik Walden really such a threat? It’s like he doesn’t have anything to complain about, so he’s just recycling last year’s complaints.

Are you serious the guy had like 13 sacks last season
I think Ellis has a big mouth, but he is a good character guy, a leader, and is really productive. Ellis is one of my favorite Cowboys despite his constant off season complaining.

I'm seriously tired of his routine
Look, I don’t want Ellis to retire. He’s a valuable member of this team and has been a big contributor for a long time. I’m generally sympathetic to players when it comes to their contracts in the NFL, but I have no sympathy for him whining that the Cowboys picked Walden late in the draft. Last year I understood, because even though he was coming off a season-ending injury, Spencer was a first round pick. The guy has NOTHING to complain about, yet he is doing so (and airing Roy’s dirty laundry to the press?).
I assume everyone will tune him out as usual, but this guy needs to be the leader of the defense and, frankly, the whole team. He’s been here a long time. Instead, all he does is complain.
I guess I just expected that, for once, he wouldn’t be whining all the time. I gotta learn how to tune it out again.

I take it back, for now
Seeing as how I think I misinterpreted something, I’ll take back what I said about Greg for now. It is weird that he was saying all that stuff about Roy. If Roy didn’t ask him to, that could be awkward.

Just tune him out Deke, overall he is a good play and team leader
It could be worse, he could beat someone to a pulp then shoot recklessly at him.

Roy Williams's role HAS changed
But that’s because in his OLD role he was raipdly becoming the 2nd coming of Elvis “Toast” Patterson.

There was a lot of pro and con debate on roy last season
but can anyone really step up and defend this guy anymore? It looks like he has simply lost the heart to play the game and is grasping at any excuse (changing his number, new defense etc.) to shift the blame away from him. If the boys can’t cut him this season due to salary cap restraints, demand a restructuring or just bury him on the bench. This team has too much potential to let one crappy player derail all their plans.

Ellis starting already?
It’s a little early for Ellis to start bitching about things. And why does he feel the need to talk about how a teammate doesn’t fit in to Dallas’ defensive plans? Is he sitting in on the DB coach’s meetings? Greg we love you on the field, but I suggest a gag orger be placed on him restricting him from talking to the media.

Wow
I am suprised to hear someone put a current teammate out there like that.
I personally would rather have Hamlin and Watkins Start…
I wish Roy had some Value.. How does a guy go the Pro-Bowl that often and have no trade value.. Can we get a 3rd for the guy?

It's a shame.
Roy was my favorite player when he was in college and I was soooooooo stoked when Dallas drafted him.
Was my favorite player on Dallas while Woodie was here. After that, I found myself continually cussing at him on TV. Shockey burns him. Ben Watson burns him. Any Moss. Any WR at that. Most TEs. FBs can outsmart him.
This changing his jersey # may be his last hope in Dallas.
That #38 sure can hit!

I listened to this interview on SIRIUS
Yes, I wish Ellis would’ve not volunteered any of this about Roy, but it was obvious that he is Roy’s friend and is rooting for him and was trying to defend him. His only point is that maybe Roy really does fit better in a different system (I’m not sure that position has existed for a few decades though…one where the SS never has to cover anybody…)
Also, Ellis was not complaining at all about his situation in Dallas. He actually sounded really, super up-beat and excited. He knows his career won’t last forever and he seemed pretty up-to-speed with the business realities of the NFL.
I think he is mildly concerned that the whole Hard Knocks thing may distract the young guys. He says the vets have got to step up and stay on top of that sort of thing.
Don’t be hatin’ on him yet.

Point taken
I’m glad Greg sounds upbeat, and I feel a little silly for bashing him above. I’m sure that as one of the fellow graybeards on this team he has a stronger relationship with Roy than most, so I understand why negative talk about Roy would upset him. I don’t really see what he was trying to accomplish with this, but maybe Roy asked him to say something? In any case, Ellis acknowledged that Roy didn’t fit in well last year, and it’s disheartening to hear that he’s isolating himself.
What’s sad is that if Roy made less and didn’t go to the pro bowl every year, he would probably have an easier time in terms of the criticism. Of course, he’d probably also be benched sooner.
I, for one, am rooting for Roy to get back to his old playmaking self. I’m skeptical he can, but I’d like nothing more for him to become a solid link in this defense again.

Greg Ellis is a beast
best D player we have had for the past decade, he has the right to talk and he earned the right to say what he wants. And it sounds like he wants this guy out of here, Roy sucks, Roy apologists, im sorry, but he has got to go or move him to LB, one or the other. He can’t play safety here…

I think that Roy ~*could*~ play
if he takes a large pay cut. He’s not worth the millions that could be used to improve the team at other positions.

whats the big deal?
Ellis isn’t saying anything more negative about Roy than anyone on this blog has stated.
Why do people care what Ellis is saying in the press?

Very Sad....
Roy used to one of my favorite Cowboys; even when the team struggled, I knew #31 would give me reason to smile every Sunday. He was good for a bone crunching hit or two a game, but then something happened – He was asked to cover. It seems as though the Monday night game against the Redskins a couple of years ago marked the begininng of what looks like the end of Roy Williams or maybe it was Kelly Rowland. Anyway, the #31 jersey that I used to wear with pride, now sits in the back of my closet. I miss the old Roy, but I don’t think he’s coming back anytime soon and if he does, it probably won’t be as a member of America’s Team.
