Pacman Jones

So it seems everyone here is overall happy with the Pacman trade.

I have a different take. First off my first memory of the NFL is the 1971 season where the Cowboys beat the Dolphins for the Super Bowl to claim their first title and most likely that game is the reason the Dolphins went undeafeated the next season.

Now it has been a tough off season for me. I really don't want to support this team any longer. Don't get me wrong I love the Star, but with the way Jerry is picking up the trouble of the league it really has made it hard for me to sit with my son and tell him root for the Cowboys even thought they have guys like Pacman who is responsiable for a shooting in a strip club because he want to make it rain. The he asks "what is making it rain?"

It's tough. I would just like to know does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

I voted yes, but I understand your point

I was against the Deion trade way back when, as I never liked the ice-dumping stunt he pulled on Tim McCarver (deserved or not, it was bush)...

As for these guys, I have absolutely no problem with Tank, and believe what I’ve heard about his leadership contribution to the team. Pac is another story, and will need to earn my respect, but I’m willing to give the guy this last chance.

As far as the son goes...

Discussing “second chances” ... and when they are / are not appropriate, might be a good course of conversation?

Another angle to take

Point out how many high character guys the Boys have on their team. Dont make the same mistake the media does and always focus on the negative. Use it as an example to teach him to pick his friends carefully and to surround himself with good people and not thugs.

Big time Cowboy fan

I like both moves for Tank and Pac-Man, especially if Pac-Man can stay out of trouble. I think people can change, especially with a a change scenery..

Doesnt hurt that I believe they are going to make big time plays this season.

It’s tough. I would just like to know does anyone else have this problem?

My answer is no.

I voted yes

but will always support the team, don’t necessarily have to like all the players.

Hmm

I see how that could be hard to discuss. What I’d focus on is how we all can make mistakes, some bigger than others but ultimately it’s beneficial help those who are in obvious need. PacMan was headed down a bad road and giving him this chance may save a life or two, including his own. Treating people like scum only makes them act like scum. A second chances is just what Pac needs, now it’s up to him to show he’s interested in growing up.

Teams are like Families

I understand the desire to have only “high character” guys.

I personally was against the Pacman signing. Since the signing, the thing that has come to light to me is that the community and team is coming together to support this young man to better his character and support him with one last chance. I never thought this would happen.

You’ve seen it with the New England organization and the Cowboys…a team with strong leadership and support groups can take players and make them a part of a team with character.

I hope Adam Jones seizes this opportunity and becomes a positive story of second, third, or whatever chances.

The main problem I have with bad character guys is...

...the TRUST issue.

That’s it.

I’m not gonna judge anybody and preach some holier than thou sermon here because nobody’s perfect.

However, when you sign a contract to play for a team, that team (owner, coaches, teammates, fans) is putting their trust in you to stay out of trouble, give 100 percent effort, stay totally focused, and be a team player.

And if someone has had multiple offenses, the trust level is gonna be a hell of a lot lower than with someone with a clean record.

That’s the only issue I have with these types of players.

Without Question

YES!!!

My point of view differs though. Especially when it comes to Tank. I could not sit and watch games with my daughter and tell her why everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. That people make bad decisions and that doesnt always mean they are bad people. To embrace the idea that once you burn me or society, thats it, You are destined to life of serving burgers in a fast food joint goes against all I believe.

My other question to you is this: How could you be a fan through Michael Irvin, Bob Hayes, Charles Haley, and the host of other second chance guys this team has had and won with? Did you cringe at having to tell your son what hookers and blow were? This is not a league of role models. There are plenty of them in this league but my no means is it a requirement for entry.

My suggestion would be to point to guys like Roy Williams (off the field) and Jason Witten and tell your son that helping another person turn their life around is a part of being human. Throwing them away or refusing to offer that hand back to one reached out to you for help is…

Good Point

I will give you that but back then I was single, no kids so my views were different. I agree on focusing on the postive and to tell you the truth this post has really made me regain my trust and postive outlook on our Cowboys. Thank you

good write up Impatient...fully agree with your take on this...

I have a feelin’ this guy’s (afl) is goin’ to jumping out of his seat with excitement when Pacman takes a few balls to the house, and helps us win a few Super Bowl Championships…....I believe Pacman will be a changed man here in Dallas…........If people want to believe every one sided story about a guy they read in the media….they’ll living in an isolated shell of reality (Pacman is no saint, but he’s never been to prison either)....I’m a firm supporter of believing half of what you read, and none of what you hear…..

After agonizing for 12 years awaiting a playoff win, I’m willing to take some chances on a player or two….And I’m so proud Jerry Jones is too.

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."

No so fast

I disagree with you about me jumping out of my seat. It took the entire first season TO was with us for me to cheer for him. The first season when he scored I would just go alright Cowboys way to go. I refused to root for him. I just felt he would tear our team apart. I WAS WRONG! He has been great. I truly hope I am wrong again but I will not cheer for Adam Jones until he proves he has changed.
I heard a great quote today on Sirius NFL Radio
“Root for the Uniform not the Players and your heart will never be broken”
Tha tis a great quote!

The cowboys are a football team

not a parenting manual. Tell your son that superior athletes who make plays get big money in the world of sports and the same rules that apply to society don’t always apply to professional sports. Jerry gave Tank and Pac second chances and a chance to turn their lives around but make no mistake, if they both weren’t highly talented, they wouldn’t be here.

I am a Cowboys fan for life and anyone who helps this team win is fine with me because I watch football for entertainment, not as an example of how to live.

The real question is how come nobody cares that the majority of these guys came from terrible backgrounds in the first place? How about the millions of guys who don’t make it into the NFL and lead depressing, poverty stricken lives? Your questions run deeper than a football team and just as Impatient pointed out, Pac and Tank are certainly not the first guys of questionable character to wear the star and certainly won’t be the last.

Oh yeah

And read Blogging the Boys for your Cowboys news and stop watching ESPN and you might actually get the real story and not Ed Werders sensationalized half bs dog and pony show. :-)

of course I'm still as big of a fan

even though I don’t agree with signing Pacman. Its a trust issue with me, I just don’t think he’s actually changed and will evetually screw up again and hurt the team.

Its like when your kid makes a bad decision, you’re disappointed but you don’t love him or her any less.

Thanks

I have to say thanks to all of my fellow Cowboys fans.

My heart will not let me give up on a team I have rooted for all of my life. Hell just to let you know I was born in 1966, my Dad named me DALLAS for the team, so how can I not root for the team I am named after?

The love of this team was put in me at birth and one that will never go away, it’s just hard at times. I trust Jerry and think he is a great owner (minus the fight with Jimmy).
We ahve great guys on the team (Whitten, Romo, Roy) who do great things for our community so I will focus on the postive and leave the negative behind.

wow

to be named after the team is like the ultimate fan responsibility! i can understand why you especially take seriously what message it sends to your son. thanks for sharing it here and i’m glad the responses have helped focus on the positive. there’s valuable lessons to learn in the game of football, and it’s important to have a perspective on it, and he’s lucky to have a father who takes these questions seriously.

I hope you have taken this statement back
Now it has been a tough off season for me. I really don’t want to support this team any longer.

It is ok to doubt or disagree but Cowboys fans have endured lots of negativity and lows to go with even more positives and highs. Thick or thin we are still supporting the team (not the owner or all the players necessarily but the team).

be glad

Our team is not on self distruct like the Bengals. That team makes some horrible decisions..

Ahh True that

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Tank can't even be compared to Pacman....

Tank Johnson got caught with some guns that he wasn’t supposed to have, supposedly. I would argue that the 2nd ammendment protects us all, and supersedes all of these bs regulations that have been passed over the years that limit where you can carry a gun, and what types of guns you can have. How you have to have them stored in your vehicle when you transport them, etc etc etc…. Tank is a victim of the liberal politicans. He is not a criminal! He’s never shot anybody with one of his guns…

by hakrjak on Jun 13, 2008 11:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Tank made the mistake of not checking out the fact that around Chicago like many cities the laws are different then they were in Texas. He made assumptions that were very wrong and has paid the price. He also hung around with a guy that he should have dumped but as an old friend could not. The guy is now dead. I think Tank has shown that he learned.

Nice answers

As others suggest, I would emphasize that it’s never too late to turn your life around and when you do, there are always others around willing to either drag you back down or move you forward. That’s what Pacman is facing now and we’ll all see which he chooses over the coming years.

I think the characted of the team is going to change the problem children, and not the other way around. There is strong leadership on this team with guys like Witten, T-New, Romo and James.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

Amen

I think the network of former players is huge too. If Pacman turns it around, so much credit is due to Deion Sanders. I really think that a guy like Pacman just needs to see the correct path. For him to come to the Cowboys and have his idol take him under his wing, invite him to live in his house, train with him, and show him how much good the game can do for a person is invaluable. Pacman saw first hand what happens when you take immense talent, become famous and make your fortune, and live like an upstanding citizen. Instead of being an outcast or pariah, Pacman saw that you can become a hero in the eyes of the community and have the world be your oyster.

Perhaps I’m overly optimistic at his chances of not making more mistakes, but I think between the solid leadership in the locker room, the great relationship that the Joneses have with the players, and the network of former players who remain actively interested and involved with the team, the Cowboys are the perfect place for talented but troubled players to be.

And on this same note,

I think Michael Irvin’s HOF initiative is such a great idea. His interview in the fanshots section about it is really worth watching, for those that haven’t seen it yet.

i live and breathe the star

its not an obsession, this love i have for the cowboys, its a job. the message sent out to te league is the same on the statue of liberty. we take the tired, poor ,weak , bad, and show them that life is and will be good again. we are a franchise that will do whatever it takes to support our players, as long as they are ready. sometimes it takes seeing something so beautiful , something put here from heavens …to put a life into perspective.this star…this star is everything, and dont doubt it for a second.believe in it, and believe in its power. teach ur son that things happen in life, but pick urself up everyday and believe. in 20 years ur son will be telling you to believe….like the cowboys do.
