Giant Steps: George Martin completes cross-country trek for 9/11 heroes
Sunday, June 22nd 2008, 2:28 AM
Former New York Giant great George Martin has reached the end zone, completing a 3,003-mile cross-country walk to raise more than $2 million for ailing Ground Zero heroes.
This true Giant, all 6-feet-5 of him, strode into Embarcadero Park North in San Diego yesterday after a journey of stamina and discovery that began last Sept. 16 in New York and averaged 22 miles a day.

He also lost 40 pounds and found a curious bonanza - more than $190 in loose change.
Martin's 13-state journey, including brutal 50-mph headwinds in Oklahoma and searing 114-degree heat in Arizona, would have made Lewis and Clark proud.

Tough crowd in here.
George Martin was a Cowboys opponent for about a dozen years. This is a great story. Plus, there’s not a lot of news until training camp.
I’ve said many times that the Cowboys haven’t done enough to support our troops, that they’re more interested in Pepsi commercials and trips to Mexico than a trip to Fort Sam Houston. This guy raised two million dollars all by himself. I guess it would be more interesting to you folks if he hung out with hookers, took drugs, got a few DUIs, and had a few gun-related incidents. A story like this about an NFL player transcends sports.
Was the “Does this even interest you oh barry-sann” directed at me or thebigham? Don’t you know that I lived in New York City during 9-11 and later ran for Manhattan Borough President?

this is a good story
not that i’d want the fanposts filled with stuff like this all the time, but we are going into a slow news period, and division rival news is at least tangentially on topic…
George Martin
I’ve always felt he did his best work with The Beatles. But that’s just my opinion.
I agree, while being a nice story, this belongs in the fanshots section. Fanposts are anything to do with Cowboys. Just a reminder.

This is a great story
He finished on Saturday, and was running around doing PR on … SUNDAY. The guy is STILL a beast.
I would be taking about a month off. He went through 24 pairs of shoes and his only ailments were blisters? He has my respect.
And I also like the cause. Those first responders should have our ultimate respect. Instead of the red carpet, we’re giving them endless red-tape and insurance company mazes. This is worth shining the light on… good job, George!
