There are good things in Texas afterall
Yesterday I may have found my new brew for the summer. I'm pretty picky about my wheat and dark beers, but I gotta tell you, the Shiner guys know what they're doing. I got a mixed case of the Hefe, Dunkel, Bock, and black Lager. They're all really good.
I was just curious if Shiner is something thats pretty prevelent in Texas or if it's still a Microbrewery.
I think out of the four, the black lager was my favorite.

Just fall of the Turnip Truck?
Shiner is the unofficial, official beer of Texas.
Go visit the brewery, good times.
You need to get out more.

Get out more?
I’m from PA man. I dont think they sell it much further north than here. In fact I bought in MD so I’m not sure they have it PA…
yesterday the guy at the checkout told me that he had a guy drive 5 hours down from Boston to buy 6 cases of it.
Thats hardcore. No beer is worth a 5 hour drive… atleast not with Yuengling a block away

Shiner is good stuff
I’m not sure where they sell it outside of Texas, but I haven’t seen it up here in NY. I’m glad Yuengling is finally available wide – it’s the best cheap beer, in my opinion.
Another beer I wish I could get here is Fat Tire; seems like you can get it anywhere west of the Mississippi.

Fat Tire!
Joos, I agree: Fat Tire is one of the best beers out there. Up until recently, they were not selling it east of the Mississippi. However, I can now find it in selected areas around Milwaukee, WI. Seems New Belgium Brewing Co is doing a slow rollout eastward. They also have a few other less popular, but equally tasty beers.
Fat Tire was available in Chicago in early 2008. Someone from here in WI was heading down that way, so I got a case. I couldn’t believe my lucky stars: my favorite team ready to make a playoff run and my favorite beer, all merging into one glorious Sunday. Alas, the Giants spoiled the day.

Great news
I hope to see it on my local taps if it’s made it to Chicago/Milwaukee. I first had it in California and Oregon, but I noticed it on tap in Texas when I was down there recently. I think it’s from Colorado originally, but could be wrong.
And speaking of beers, the “old” Belgium makes some pretty good ones as well. Delerium Tremens is still my favorite – it will get you blitzed (9% alc) and it tastes like candy to me.

+1 on the praise for Shiner
I have tried almost all of the different Shiner brews and they are all good, though I’m not a big fan of the black. Thankfully I’m in Texas so I don’t have to worry about being able to find it. There’s nothing worse than finding a great beer and then not being able to find it on a regular basis.

The cheesesteak deserves a nod
Even though it’s gross if you get it at the downtown mainstays (seriously, wtf is up with the cheez wiz, I don’t care if it’s the traditional way, actual cheese is so much better), I give Philly kudos for the concept.
A couple of friends of mine have a loft in Chinatown in Philly, it seems like a decent place to live. But with my sports team allegiances (Cowboys, Braves, Capitals) I really, really hate every Philly team but the 76ers.

The fans are better in Philly
I dont care what stories you heard about Santa clause and all that jazz. No championships for 48 years and the Eagles are still one of the hardest tickets to get in the NFL.
Furthermore, it’s easy to root for a winner. Not so easy to suck it up and continue rooting for a team that continues to break your heart. Of Couse i guess you guys can understand that too over the past 11 years… especially after last year.
Ok… best fans might be a stretch cuz there are great fans everywhere… however, most are not as dedicated as in Philly.

Scum is Scum
It wasn’t just a few fans that were booing when Michael Irvin was carried off on a stretcher. It was the large majority. That is an unbelievable lack of class. I cannot imagine that happening at the football stadiums I frequent in Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Arizona, etc. There are other examples of very poor behavior, and that jail was not placed in the Vet on accident. Perhaps it is an East Coast thing, but by Midwestern standards, Philly fans are scum. The fact that they are dedicated scum makes no difference. I despise them above all others.
700 Level, you seem like a decent guy (or perhaps gal). But it will take many more of you, and years of good fan behavior in general to change my opinion of Philly fans….not that you will care about my opinion, but since you are visiting our blog I thought I’d share it.

48 years is a long time.
so i’d say we’re not really a winning franchise in terms of championships… thats obvious…
However, a couple more years of the cowboys not being able to win even one playoff game could probably erase the memories of the early nineties completely!

Possibly
I’m going to just say it: Dallas fans are pretty fair-weather (in terms of the city as a whole). Loving the Cowboys is an honored tradition there, but when the Cowboys are good, it elevates to a whole new level of insanity (I was there last weekend and on Sunday night like every local station had a 30 minute show about OTAs).
Philly has seriously dedicated fans. They’re so tortured that they’re truly insufferable (and sorry, this is not some base generalization based on them booing Irvin’s injury and Santa Claus, I endured an NHL playoff series this year against the Flyers where the entire arena chanted “F* Ovechkin” for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON), but their dedication cannot be questioned. I admire that about Philly fans. But the dedication combined with frustration leads to lashing out against opposing players and fans that really makes the city and its fans look bad. Philly has a lot of great fans (whom I respect very much), but it has more rude, obnoxious, violent, and classless fans than any other city, and that’s just a fact. I’m not saying all stereotypes are based on truth, and I know Philly fans (good and bad) are tired of getting smeared with that brush, but there is a reason why fans in every other sports market in America believe this particular one to be true. I realize this is the result of having consistently good teams that can’t get over the championship hump, and I know that’s extremely frustrating (Cowboys fans, imagine the last 2 years stretched out over 48), but it’s not an excuse.
All that said, I would love for the Cowboys to have had the playoff success (limited though it may be) that the Eagles have had this decade. But have all the fun with the 11 year thing that you can this year, because we all know it’s coming to an end this postseason.

I’M SURE THAT WOULDA BEEN SAID LAST YEAR AS WELL!
That was a good post man. You’re pretty much right on the money.
What i think will be interesting is when the Eagles actually do get over the hump some day, are we all going to say, “wait, thats it? This is all the better is?”
I think a championship or two would actually settle the fans down more than it would make them crazier

Fair point
As a person that was certain the Boys would beat the Giants in the playoffs, can’t argue that. Expectations are getting a little out of control, but winning a playoff game isn’t too much to ask.
I’m curious, do you honestly think the Cowboys won’t win a single playoff game this year? I’m not sure what to make of the Eagles this year. They always scare me and are always a threat but they just give McNabb no help and he gets hurt every year now. How has DeSean Jackson looked in OTAs?

Oh and
I think that a championship would be a great thing for Philly. Look at Red Sox fans – they won one and all of the existential angst melted away. Then they they won a bunch more and the whole city is insufferable in the opposite direction.
I think Philly just needs a championship because it’s simply wrong that an entire generation of great sports fans could go their entire lives without a championship.
The Phillies have a shot this year, I think. As long as it’s not the Eagles or Flyers, I can deal.

I like you man! I like being able to have a decent conversation with a cowboys fan without, the “your team sucks!” crap.
First of all… the cowboys absolutely scared me to death last year. Because of the way TO crapped on us, I cant bear to see him win a superbowl. I’ve always disliked Dallas (actually my dad is dallas fan), but TO made me HATE them.
Dallas, on paper should win the NFC… but thats why they play the game. I will tell you though that I do think Tony Romo is a choker. I’d have given him a pass on the botched hold, but after last year I think its a head problem.
If Dallas doesnt win a playoff game this year, its all gonna blow up
But if I’m betting… Dallas is playing as far as the NFC championship game….
where they obviously lose to the Eagles :)

McNabb in the SuperBowl...
If you want to call out QBs for choking you don’t need to look any further than your own team… I don’t recall Romo puking in the huddle.
Everybody knows that Owens was at half speed and Crayton dropped a key pass and did not make the proper adjustment on a play that should have produced a touchdown. You can’t pin the playoff loss on Romo.
The Red Ball Express will be rolling this year!

How do you justify your QB dry heaving between plays while your team is trying to drive down the field to possibly win the SB. That is “THE” definition of choke. Meanwhile TO overcomes a broken leg in superhuman style to play like the MVP.

Agreed
Nothing says opposing fans can’t have a contentious chat without things getting ugly.
I understand your position on TO. I hated him before he was a Cowboy, and he definitely screwed the Eagles over like few players have ever done. I don’t know that Reid and higher ups handled him the right way, but the Eagles are no-nonsense to a fault at times. At least they’re consistent.
I’m not going to label Romo a choker because he wasn’t able to beat the Giants D. A couple of guys named Brett Favre and Tom Brady were undone by the same defense in a similar manner, and I don’t think they’re chokers. I think the Seattle game was more of a “choke” situation, but I don’t hold it against Romo because he never should have been holding in the first place (and the team should have gotten that 1st down). That said, Romo made some mental mistakes in the Giants game, and I think he’ll improve them. I also think he’ll get more help from his receivers when TO is healthy/Crayton catches the damn ball.
I unfortunately must agree that if the Boys don’t win a playoff game again (unless it’s due to a Romo injury…knock on wood), heads will roll. Then again pretty much every Cowboys fan knows Wade is gone after this year no matter what happens.
By the way, I don’t think McNabb is a choker. You can fairly criticize him for the Super Bowl loss, I guess, but it’s not like they lost to the Giants or something. I think Philly fans are actually way too hard on the guy. The one year he had a truly good WR to throw to, they almost won the Super Bowl (and I know TO was out for the playoffs, but still). The way Philly has penny-pinched at the WR position is kind of tragic. And I definitely still feel for McNabb over the TO thing. That wasn’t fair.
I kind of hoped McNabb would have left Philly, just to get appreciated elsewhere (and not facing him twice a year would be ok with me too).

Two quick comments
1) Thats is a good point about the other guys who got beat by the Giants.
2) My opinion is McNabb will have to retire to leave Philly. The last thing the Eagles front office could handle is McNabb going elsewhere and winning a superbowl or two… which he would with the right team and him staying healthy

Favre is one of the greatest
QB’s ever to play the game but unfortunately he is a tremendous choker. He has crapped the bed in more playoff games than any other HOF QB and the fact that he played for so many years and is such a great guy have fueled his reputation as an all time great QB. The fact is, he has wayyy to much faith in his arm and threw so many bad passes that lost games that nobody seems to mention. Take a look at his last offensive possession ever – overtime, lambeau field, a field goal wins the game…whoops! Horrible pass right into the hands of a giants defender, have a nice retirement.

actually 700 club
Romo is the exact opposite of a choker, there isn’t a qb in the league I’d rather have under center with the game on the line than Romo. He’s like they say, as cool as the other side of the pillow.
Just because he failed to win his first 2 playoff games means nothing. It took Aikman 4 seasons to win his first and Manning 6 seasons, I guess those guys are chokers too, huh?

sure you can
You always go to the top with blame first.
And i DEFINITLY never said McNabb isnt a choker! But I could make the same argument as you made about Romo.
In 2002 in the loss to the Bucs, our Defense didnt show up. Everyone remembers mcnabb’s pick for a TD to ronde barber, but forget that the receiver ran the wrong route.
In 2003, in the loss to the Panthers, 2 of mcnabb’s picks were off the hands (or breadbasket) of my aligator arms Todd Pinkston.
In the Superbowl loss to NE… well yeah McNabb gets that one.
Oh one last thing… Puking doesnt make anyone a choker. Not getting it done when you should’ve does.

The thing that baffled me about McNabb in the SB
Was his lack of urgency in the two minute drill. It was like he thought he had all day to march down the field to score, and just ran out of time.

you think you were yelling at the tv?
try being an Eagles fan. To this day, I’ll never understand that drive.
The other thing I’ll never understand is why when the Eagles got the ball back with like 30 seconds to go, why they ran deep routes and threw a pass to westbrook in the middle of the field for a two yard game.
Just to set the record straight one more time since a couple on this thread havent heard me the first time… I NEVER SAID MCNABB IS NOT A CHOKER.
In fact lets just be honest, until you retire the jury is out. If Mcnabb wins the SB this year, or if Romo does it, no one will remember the previous failures.

You're absolutely right
The choking label only really sticks after you retire, when they’re carving your sports tombstone. Elway is a great example. Peyton is a good example. Look at KG and Ray Allen this year, their legacy is totally redeemed as a result of winning it all. It doesn’t matter how many games you lose, as long as you lead your team to a championship.
And I heard you on McNabb (does that mean you’re saying he is a choker?), but I don’t think he’s a choker. It was unfortunate loss for the McNabb, but when you’re on a desperate comeback drive, you’re not a choker if you don’t win (unless a winning pass bounces off of your hands or something). I don’t know a bunch of chokers in the NFL. Mike Vanderjagt is the only one that immediately comes to mind. I wouldn’t even put that evil on Scott Norwood, because he only botched one tough and difficult kick.
I guess McNabb threw a short pass to Westbrook because it’s all Andy Reid lets him do (I kid). I can’t imagine how frustrating that was. We went through something similar last year, but at least Romo wasn’t puking and it wasn’t the Super Bowl after years of almost getting there.
And I get the Romo bashing, he’s a guy people love to hate because the Cowboys are the most hated team. Until he at least wins a playoff game, that label is going to stick (it may require a super bowl victory in his case). But once it happens, the label is gone forever.
