Glenn cant pass a physical
Terry Glenn’s surgically-repaired right knee still has not passed a physical and owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday the Dallas Cowboys will wait as long as possible for the wide receiver to sign a $500,000 injury settlement -- possibly through training camp and up to the start of the season.
But Jones reiterated that it was something that needs to be done if Glenn is going to get on the field in 2008.
Jones said Glenn’s right knee -- which was operated on twice last season, keeping him out of the first 15 games -- failed a physical after the season and still has not passed.

As I mentioned yesterday, if Glenn was cut by the cowboys, he woudn't be able to pass another teams physical. Glenn cant pass a Cowboy physical. I'm sorry to say it but the writing is on the wall with Glenn, his career looks to be over. Dallas wont allow him on the field unless he signs an injury waiver, I dont blame them, it business. I just dont see why the cowboy organization continues to hold out hope with Glenn, it's clear its time to cut ties with Glenn and move on. This was another blunder by the cowboy organization by not filing a need at receiver either through the draft or the offseason free agency or trade.

Wow, I didn't know this...
...this is definitely not helping Glenn. I feel for the guy, I really do. I agree Deke, his career seems to over, I just think there are a lot of hopes around the Cowboys organization that he’ll recover, that’s why they’re keeping him around.

How is that a blunder?
Who would you suggest fill Glenn’s void? A rookie WR from a crappy selection? Ocho cinco or some other fantasy trade that was never going to happen? Deke, your crabby atttitude is endearing sometimes but if you aren’t happy with the offseason moves the cowboys have made then prepare for a lifetime of misery. Have a Captain Morgans and look on the bright side for once. The boys held out hope the knee would recover and it hasn’t but it wasn’t like they had a plethora of options either way.

Not a Blunder
The cowboys stated several times they wanted to make a move, but didn’t find a trading partner, and they didn’t think any of WR’s available via the draft were better then the guys on the roster.
I am confident one of the young guys will be able to step in and contribute!!

no market for trade, no value in the draft. but glenn is/was only one option for the air game. several young receivers already on the roster have bigger and more immediate upside than any in the draft. And they picked up some in FA that have potential to at least explore and develop. So while a known deep threat would be nice, instead of reaching for a receiver or trying to force a trade when the market just wasn’t there, they focused instead on adding dimension to the air game through RB and TE positions. Meanwhile, Jerry’s trading left them stocked up on picks next year that they can package for a veteran trade or a first day pick in a much deeper WR pool. Seems to me a pretty wise course given the circumstances and options available. Even without Glenn.

except i should say
not first day pick, more like top 5 pick. he could trade up to get the top WR in the draft next year, if a trade doesn’t work out to his liking,

trading up
And Jerry’s already giddy about the possibilities for wheelin’ and dealin’ in next year’s draft. He picked up extra ammo with the Browns’ third-rounder and Lions’ fourth-rounder and hinted that the Cowboys might move up for an elite receiver next year.“You can look pretty crafty if you’ve got a lot of picks,” Jerry said.
This year there was speculation that he would try to move up in to the top 5 to get McFadden. He had two first-round picks to work with, but the next year he’ll have an extra 3rd and 4th round to work with, along with all the regular picks (hopefully only #32 in the first round). Maybe it isn’t the top 5, but it is at least into the top half of the first round. But not impossible he could trade up into the top 5 with several of the other picks packaged together.

no team wants to move up into the top five in the draft
especially for a receiver, the money for that player kills your cap. The prime area for receivers is second and third rounds, there are too many busts for receivers in the first round especially in the top ten, ask Detroit. Charles Rogers, Roy Williiams, Mike Williams, Calvin Johnson. Two busts, one with back problems in Johnson and Roy Williams, who would really rather play somewhere else.

you could be right
my point is simply that he has the picks to package to move up to wherever the value is, and there is likely to be a lot more value next year than there was this year.

I have no doubt Jerry will be wheelin and dealin next year during the draft
But I dont see him moving up into the top fifteen though, but in the second and third round, I see the Jerry moving around quite a bit in next years draft.

possible
if he really felt the value was there, he could end up moving up in the first round, but again you could be right that that isn’t where the real value will be…

Holding out hope for Glenn's knee to get better!!!
WOW, it that how you manage your team. It was stated time and time again by the team that Glenn needed Micro-fracture surgery last year. The guy had his Cartilage removed from his knee, meaning bone on bone contact. How the hell was that going to get better with two surgeries last year without micro-fracture sugery, thats what I call wishful thinking and poor management by the GM. For three years now Dallas has neglected finding another speed and lead receiver for this club to groom knowing the age of their lead receivers and to take over the spots of Glenn and T.O.
What were the first three issues for this team heading into the free agency and the draft, running back, cover corner and receiver. Two were adressed, one was not, AGAIN!!! It takes atleast two years to groom a young receiver, the position had to be addressed over the last three years, it has not. You cant continue to sign free agents and tie up all that big money through free agency or resign thirty plus year old players.
Crayton is a good third receiver, but not a number two, he’s a seventh round pick lacking speed. Hurd is another third type possession receiver, an undrafted receiver. Austin is a straight line speed receiver with stone hands and is nothing more than a bubble player at best, another undrafted receiver, reminds me of Randell Williams, if he doesn’t show major improvement in training camp, he’ll be cut. Stanback is a project with some upside, at this point, nothing more than that, a project!! I’ve never seen people have so much faith in undrafted players, if they were so good with so much upside, why were they undrafted. Although I would never draft a first round receiver unless that player is a Calvin Johnson type receiver, there are always receivers available in the middle rounds where there is value and upside to develop for a receiver. Glenn is done, if this club loses T.O or Witten for any time due to injury, this offense will struggle badly. Jerry was smart not to throw ridiculous money at some of these free agents, like Berrian and Walker this offseason, but he had chances of getting some upside receivers over the last three years, but didn’t address the receiver position. Takng another Tightend in the second round was a head scracther to me, with Curtis already on the roster and Hannah with so much upside, taking Bennett instead of moving down picking up picks and still drafting a receiver should of been the thinking
The best offensive move this club made this offseason was rehiring Hudson Houck, this offensive line struggled at times on first and second down running the ball early in games leaving third and long too many times. This offensive line will be much improved this year, you’ll see the difference early.. The best hiring on defense was Dave Campo and Todd Grantham. This team will have a better pass rush with Grantham coaching the linemen and Campo will clearly help our secondary, but there is only so much you can do with Roy Williams back there, you cant hide him. My preference at safety would be Hamlin at strong safety and Henry at free safety. Dave Campo is a very good secondary coach.
From the last offseason and training camp, I been saying it for three years, Roy Williams is nothing more than an average safety, Reeves is nothing more than a fourth corner at best, Nate Jones is a spare, Akiin Ayodele is solid but not a play maker, nothing special. Three out of the four are gone, Williams is running out of time with is one tirck pony act. I dont agree with resigning or bringing in more aging 30+ players, Zach Thomas is an upgrade over Akin but is one hit away from being lost for the year, he has concussion issues, Signing an older Thomas stunts the growth of Carpenter and Burnett, Carpenter never gets time on the field other than special teams, the only position where he actually spent time at for more than one year. Burnett, who I thought was a great second round pick, he's a play maker, but cant stay healthy and will surely will be lost via free agency, I dont see him resigning here unless he gets to start.. dallas draft picks rarley see the field, instead are kept on the bench for years where teams like the Giants get their rookies in actual games to get them game reps, which clearly helped them in their playoff run.
Overall, this defense has improved greatly by the offseason moves and coach hirings, but there are still a couple of positions that need upgrading, Williams, Spears and James. James is a team leader, but he doesn’t make alot of plays behind the line of scrimmage and is more of a two down player. I dont care what the name is on the back of the Jersey, its about the position and the team overall to me. and what positions need upgrading that will cost the team a chance to win the division and a superbowl. If you think thats negative and rather talk about complete fictional, never going to happen daily trades, or who Romo is dating, welcome to it, I fiind that a waste of time.

I agree that WR is a thin position
but you can’t have quality depth at every position all the time. Who would you have selected at WR to be on the roster this year? We didn’t draft a WR last year because we had bigger needs. If you want to look at all the smart moves the cowboys have made this year and highlight the lack of acquiring a WR as a major blunder, have at it, I choose to be more like Impatient and acknowledge that my GM and team are improving and trying hard to win now.

It hasn't been adressed for three years
putting Stanbach aside, who was drafted as a project, because of his measureables more than his ability as a receiver. Dalas hasn’t addressed an area on the team that has been glaring. This team struggled again down the stretch last year on offense when T.O was injured and not 100%
I choose to be more like Impatient and acknowledge that my GM and team are improving and trying hard to win now
Just remember where that same kind of GM thinking got the cowboys in the ninties, three 5-11 seasons, Jerry signed high priced free agents, trading two first round picks, resigned aging veterans and restructured contracts, instead of gutting the roster and rebuilding it. That got us no championships, in salary cap hell and no talent and an aging roster. All you have to do is see what the Patriots have done managing their roster and salary cap, they compete every year for the dividsion and a championship, they dont panic and throw all their eggs into one basket. If they have a down year, its usually for one year and not five.
Another example is Greenbay this year, they have a roster full of good receivers, and they still draft another in the second round in Jordy Nelson allowing them to release another older receiver in Koreen Robinson, a reject player many now want dallas to go sign.
This year, I didn’t get the Bennet draft pick in the second round, dallas should of moved down and picked up earl Bennet, Caldwell or Douglas. Caldwell or Bennet would of made a nice number two speed receiver, but those are players that need to be on a roster now. maybe if we drafted a lead back in Mendenhall instead of Jones, maybe we wouldn’t need to spend two draft picks on the running back position, and thats not a slight on Jones or choice in any way, both are goo players, its about drafting philosphy. If dallas signed Tatum Bell as i thought they should of, a player thats the same type of player as Felix Jones, that would of given dallas an extra pick for a receiver, nose tackle or a strong safety this year, three positions not addressed in the draft.
I’m hoping Stanback shows alot of improvement in preseason, because with Glenn pretty much done, if T.O or Witten goes down with an injury, this offense and season will be in serious trouble..

You've got to be kidding me
Just remember where that same kind of GM thinking got the cowboys in the ninties, three 5-11 seasons, Jerry signed high priced free agents, trading two first round picks, resigned aging veterans and restructured contracts, instead of gutting the roster and rebuilding it.
What on earth does that have to do with the current offseason? You don’t agree on passing up Mendenhall, okay, I’ll give you that one but other than that I give Jerry an A+ for the moves he had made. Don’t you think if a viable option at WR had been there, the trigger would have been pulled? As for Green Bay, I would never trade our current roster for theirs and they had no choice but to stock up on WR because they are not sure what they have at QB. The Pats had pure crap at WR two seasons ago but Miami and Oakland were stupid enough to give up Moss and Welker for nothing so they got better in a hurry. I’m sure if Cincy had offered Ocho Cinco for a sack of beans we would have him too but Cincy and Detroit wouldn’t give up their WRs.
I agree that WR is a concern but to single out that one move (or non move) in the offseason is nitpicking, that’s all I’m saying. This is not the nineties, Jerry has learned his lesson and if the boys don’t make some noise in the offseason this year, it is not his fault.

Super Bowl champs
Had one big name WR, who was gimpy all season.. An aging WR as a 2 who is no faster then Crayton, and Rookie. There TE was another rookie..
They got it done by effectively running the football, limiting turnovers and pressuring the qb. We can do all of that just as good, if not better then them..
So let it play out, we will be fine.

If he can't pass a physical
then the Cowboys’ position on the waiver makes much more sense to me (as long as they didn’t tell him anything different last year, when he elected not to have surgery). If this is the case then the waiver is actually Glenn’s best option and, while it’s a cold-hearted business decision, I understand much better where the team is coming from.
by grapejoos on Jun 3, 2008 11:40 PM CDT 0 recs
Glenn should have opted for the microfracture surgery in 2007
As the Cowboys staff apparently advised him. I understand his reason for not doing it last year, but now it looks like it cost him maybe 1 or 2 more seasons if it had been successful.
With all the good news surrounding the Cowboys lately, it’s hard to get upset about it.
I don’t think our offense will suffer, as he didn’t play last season and look at how productive they were. Now with upgrades at RB and TE and maybe Stanback progresses, I don’t see a reason to panic.

If any player is going to make an impact this year it will have to be stanback, as we pretty much have seen what the others can do. Hurd is a solid guy but no game changer. Crayton is a very good #3 that does OK as a #2 (though Witten really is the #2). Austin cannot be relied upon to catch. That is why the Boys have been hoping for Glenn to come back.
by burmafrd1944 on Jun 4, 2008 3:58 AM CDT 0 recs
I don't see a need at WR
so long as T.O. is healthy. Now if he gets hurt, thats a different story, but when on the field, T.O., Witten and Crayton is all we really need, I think Romo’s 36 TDs and 4200+ yds proved that.

It was a calculated risk
not to address WR, no team can address all its position issues in a single off-season, the Cowboys have done an excellent job at doing as much as they can. That said, this WR corps, minus T GLenn did set a number of team records last year. What they don’t have is depth past TO, but who does ?
by tdships on Jun 4, 2008 2:50 PM CDT 0 recs
who does!!! Greenbay and Patriots did last year.
The first three areas that needed to be addressed was receiver, running back, and cover corner. Running back(s) addressed, Cover corner, addressed, receiver, ignored again for the third straight year.
While everyone likes to throw out that team record for our receiveing core last year, try to remember, alot of those yards came against alot of depleted defenses we played last year with third and fourth string corners playing and depleted defensive lines. We got alot of breaks with the schedule playing teams that ended up with alot of injuries on their defenses.

So please, spare me the whining about the Cowboys not having the kind of No. 2 receiver who frightens opposing defensive coordinators. If you can’t win with 13 returning Pro Bowl players, then there are issues far greater than a No. 2 receiver that must be addressed.

Tired of the "Blunder" comment
Glenn is done and WHO CARES..aside for him as a person?
I am getting sick and tired of the arm chair GM’s saying the Cowboys made a huge “blunder” by not addressing the WR position in the draft.
A)Free Agency is not done.
B)Who in the draft could come in and play better than Crayton?
C)Where did the Cowboys passing offense rank last season?
D)Who are the free agent WRs in 09-10?
E)How did we acquire TO and T Glenn?
The best way to add wr talent is in free agency. It is one of the hardest positions to draft and develop. By the time they develop..they are free agents and can be had.
