Hamlin close to a new contract
Cowboys, Hamlin nearing agreement on multi-year contract
The Cowboys are very close to signing safety Ken Hamlin to a multi-year contract, according to a source. A deal could be finalized as soon as later today or Tuesday.
The team designated Hamlin as their franchise player back in February and have been working towards a long-term deal since then.
Hamlin finished the 2007 season with 47 total tackles, five interceptions and 15 passes defensed.
Stay tuned for more details.

Potentially excellent
Do I worry that we’re commiting more money to our vets than is advisable and will be confined in the proverbial salary cap hell? Yeah.
But then I remember that the Double-J will get things taken care of money-wise, no matter what.
Prediction: Five years, 32M.

Cap hell is coming either way barring any changes during labor negotiations...
...so might as well make it count! We can keep the band together for as long as Jerry is wiling to pay the bill, so this is great news. It will be interesting to see how this compares to the Williams and Wilson FA contracts.

nah no way
They have done an excellent job so far getting players signed and staying under the cap. All the big guns will be locked up for a long time if we can Hamlin done. The next guy is Ware after next season, but I would’nt be surprised if it happened sooner. The key is to front load the heck out of the contracts. Jerry has no problem giving out the big money up front to keep their base salaries low.

That's the thing
We’re cap-strapped, so a lot (if not all) of these deals are backloaded. That’s why the labor negotiations are going to be key – Jerry is going to have to argue for some kind of soft cap to keep what we have. There’s no other way he got all of these guys in – and in fact, several of these deals increased cap room, a sure sign of backloading.
Now, as long as the players are good, it will work out, and there may be a year when guys can be cut witth impunity to avoid huge cap penalties. But let’s not kid ourselves. These are all back-loaded deals. The key is to game it so that the younger guys’ contracts get huge when TO, Flo, etc. will have retired.
Under normal circumstances, cap hell would be the consequence of this signing spree. Thankfully, these aren’t normal circumstances due to the CBA negotiations.

Here's the funny thing
Hamlin’s cap number is 2.105 mil which saves us roughly 2.3 mil. We have nearly 10 mil under the cap now. That’s 10 MIL!. Keep in mind we have to sign our draft picks, but we will still have a boat load of money under the cap afterwards.

Todd Archer says...
Hamlin’s cap number this year is now $2.105 million, which saves them roughly $2.3 million against this year’s cap. With the franchise tag, he was counting $4.396 million. So as it stands, the Cowboys have more than $10 million in cap room but have to sign their six draft picks. They have plenty of room to do whatever they want this year, either signing DeMarcus Ware or Chris Canty (or both) to deals, but the problem is the future structure of contracts with the change in when the 30 percent rule takes place.

they will restructure their contracts again
to avoid future problems

The only reason that number is low
Is that all of the contract extensions are backloaded. We were like $2 million under the cap when the offseason started, and now it’s $10 million with extensions for TO, Barber, Flo, Hamlin, etc.? That’s backloading. I expect them to sign Ware and Canty to big extensions and probably will then try to sign a WR next offseason going into an uncapped year.
It is true that you can keep doing this and restructuring, as long as the owner is willing to pick up the bill when these guys are all retirement age and making enormous money. If he can get guys to retire with years remaining on their deals, then it won’t ever come to a head. Good luck with that, Jerry.
The important point here is that we have a solid 3-4 year window to win championships. No team is good forever, and that’s as much as you can ask for.

by the way...
The key to loading up before the uncapped year is that good teams won’t be able to sign away free agents, whereas other teams will have no cap preventing them from signing away good teams’ free agents. That’s why we and the Chargers and other good teams are making sure their key players are under contract going into those years, and part of the reason why we’ve seen so many long-term deals.

You can avoid all of that by restructuring
3 or 4 years into the contract when the base salary get’s high.

Yeah
But unless the player decides they don’t want to get paid, you either have to either do another backloaded deal or cut them. While the threat of cuts loom, if the player is still good and knows the team can’t cut him because of the cap penalty, it gets tricky. The piper gets paid eventually. Or at least, this is what Madden has taught me.

there won't be any cap hell
so long as the players we sign are the real deal which I think they are. We have the makings of a mini dynasty with all this young talent signed long term.
In Romo we Trust

If they plan on keeping him long term, they need to get it done now
It’s a waste of money to franchise him at $4mil+ for a year, then turn around and sign him to a new contract next season. I doubt Jerry and Stephen would go that route.

he should have got more
good deal for both sides but i thought hamlin should have got more. hamlin has been to more pro bowls than kerry rhodes and gibril wilson combined. it’s crazy how their all making about the same kinda money. the cowboys defense is gonna be one hec of unit come 2008 season anyway

But Hamlin is smart
and settled for a few million less to be on a team stocked with pro-bowl players and an owner willing to do what it takes to win now. Only an idiot or somebody with little talent would leave the cowboys now (hi jacque reeves!)

I get why you think that about Wilson
He blows. But mark my words, Rhodes is a star in the making.
