Draft pick signings begin
Signing a draft pick a full week before the team departs for training camp might not be that early for some teams, but it's rather unusual for the Cowboys, who normally wait until the last few days to ink all of their rookies under contract.
But the Cowboys got an early jump on the process, agreeing to terms Thursday with fifth-round draft pick Orlando Scandrick, a cornerback from Boise State.

Good to see the cowboys getting a jump on these signings, usually the cowboys wait until the last few days before camp to start getting draft picks under contract. I suspect most picks will be signed before the plane trip to California, the two first round picks probably wont be signed until the day before camp begins.

Nice
One down, five to go.
Plus, Pacman needs to get reinstated.

I thought Goodell said
Sometime before TC. Did he change his tune?

Thanks, I was misinformed on that point
As long as he gets to go thru TC and pre-season.

Awesome.
I don’t know why, but I’m really excited about this kid. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was him that initiated getting signed a few days early. I think with him, Pacman, and Jenkins, we’re set for a long time at CB.

I find myself Really excited about Scandrick as well
I know they say he’s not technically sound yet. But at least when you are that fast, your margin of error is a little bit wider.
I hope we keep 6 corners so we can see if Ball has improved.
I like Henry, but I dont see any way he’s around in 09. Whether Pacman behaves or not.

Ball
I really like Ball last year, and I was peaved when they let him on waivers. I thought for sure someone would snag him up. They seemed to be real high on him at the end of last season.
by Mandmeisterx on Jul 18, 2008 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
During the season, I think you mean Nate Jones
Ball wasn’t placed on Waivers, he was promoted from the practice squad because teams were sniffing around about him.
Nate Jones was placed on waivers for a day in order to make room for Dallas to sign Tank, but no one even inquired about him, when Tank was placed on his 8 game inactive list(suspension), Dallas then resigned Jones.

Ball was placed on waivers after training camp
whenever we picked up Oglesby, so that they could place him on the practice squad.
by Mandmeisterx on Jul 18, 2008 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but there no chance that someone was going to pick him up then
He was a raw seventh round draft pick weighing about 170lbs. You lose guys like that towards the end of the season when teams with losing records are looking for players for the next year and sign players from other teams practice squads. I mention last year dallas should get him on the active roster before they lose him as other teams were sniffing around about him.
The sixth corner making the roster this year will either be Ball or Oglesby.

Matt Moore
Matt Moore wasn’t even drafted, and it didn’t stop the Panthers from snatching him. I’m not saying I thought last year Ball was Deion Sanders or anything, but he’s decent.

I see us keeping 7 CB's this year.....
CB’s-
Newman
Jones
Henry
Jenkins
Scandrick
Oglesby
Ball

A lot of db's
I see oglesby not making the cut.

Not if Deion has anything to say about that.
Oglesby might be a better special teamer than Ball. But it seems they have plans for ball.
Can Quincy Butler still qualify for the PS this year? I know the WRs like him!

special teams
is what could make the difference for some of these guys, who might not make it just as a corner, but if they show they can contribute significantly on special teams and be there as the 6th or 7th corner they just might make the roster.
by scottmaui on Jul 18, 2008 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Which is great
because those guys could be 3rd or 4th CBs on other teams

I just watched an interview with Mike Jenkins at the Rookie Symposium.
He looks huge!
This is going to be a really nice mix. We’ve got big CBs like Henry and Jenkins to handle big WRs and blow people up. Then, Newman, Scandrick, and Jones are all VERY athletic with a ton of speed. I’ve seen Newman and Jones hit people too.
These coaches probably have a crapload of new coverage packages they can’t wait to put into action.

Add to me the list
I really get a good vibe from this guy. Like Jenks he may lack the polish, but with A/P Jones and the incumbents, they should have time enough to learn. Add Campo to that mix and the team is looking strong in the secondary for the foreseeable future.

I like his speed
he can make up for the mistakes with his speed – he might be the best CB drafted
I have not heard nothing about Jenkins – but guess we will find out during TC
I agree about Ball – an I see Henry moving south to Maimi next year
can’t wait until TC and preseason

I see him moving right

why would he move..
How can you say Scandrick is better and neither one has taken a snap in the NFL. Jenkins is the better corner in my eyes. I firmly remember every corner on that boise state team getting cooked on several occassions.

Oh I was thinking waaaaaaaaaay down the road
if they have things around for Scandrick to get on the field. Like after some guys like Henry get up there in age three or four years from now.

I agree....Court Brown will be starting Safety by 2010 season....
after Roy is released, and Henry’s contract expires.

Can't wait to see him.
If he has ball-hawking skills he could make a good FS. Is that where they play him when he and Watkins are in? Or has Watkins been at FS during mini-camps?

SECOND-ARY TO NONE
Our secondary is going to be the best in the NFL this season. All of the corners on the team are good enough to be starters anywhere. If one of the corners goes down, we have the luxury to replace him with a pro bowl caliber back up. And what about the front seven. Wade is gonna be cookin up some new pressure packages that he never got use last season. This is gonna allow the secondary to make BIG plays throughout the season. ‘BOYS IN 08!!!

The drafting of Jenkins & Scandrick with the AJ signing...
not only adds talent to our corps of DBs, but also an infusion of youth.
Plus, the holdovers of T-New, Henry, and Ball should make for a very competitive training camp. And talented competition always brings the best out of players.
Here’s to everyone staying healthy.
