Sunday afternoon Cowboys headlines
I’m traveling over the next couple of days before I leave for training camp later this week. So my posting schedule will be curtailed, hopefully Brandon and Tuna Helper will pick up the slack.
Robertson, along with Nfldraftscouts.com, assumed he would have been a third-round pick in the 2008 draft, but the harsh reality of a muscle injury crushed the possibility.
"When I was training for the combine in March, I tore my pectoral muscle," Robertson said. "This was a major setback for me. It shot a lot of hope of what I wanted to do."
Lucky for us. I’m telling you guys, this guy could play at Georgia Tech.

The final linebacker spot might come down to Roberston and Walden
depending who shows more during training camp and preseason games. The odd man out will probably be a candidate for the practice squad.

next question
Can Amendola make it to the practice squad? Probably premature question since camp hasn’t started..

why couldn't he?
If Glenn plays, he’ll definitely be practice squad material.

I assumed he meant this:
“If we cut Amendola, can he make it to the PC before another team snaps him up”
I think no. I think there are plenty of teams that would snatch him up, if only to deny the Cowboys the chance to have him on the PC.

exactly
That is what I was wondering, do you think he would get signed if we cut him, and tried to put him on the practice squad.
The hype has kind of died down around him, but I do remember him saying he had other offers.

Just like that TC guy from last year
Forgot his name, but he was impressive during preseason and as soon as we cut him AZ picked him up. He played as their 3rd or 4th WR last year and ran back punts.

most of our castoffs end up in Arizona
Urban, merritt and Rector, all our Wide receiver castoffs

Yeah Urban, thanks.
He seems to be a reliable possession guy.

TG
sounds like the Glenn situation is nearing resolution and is likely to come down to a compromise in the split contract as expected. Of course the bigger question of whether and how long his knee holds up will remain indefinitely, but it will be nice to at least have his contract question out of the way and know Glenn will start, knee allowing…

Your word on Robertson is good enough for me
Add him to my cat carrier along with Scandrick. Another pressure guy sounds good to me. The Giants did well bringing those guys in waves…

Good, he's going to be ready for TC
He knows he’ll have to earn his spot by playing well on ST. Don’t know if he did that at GT, but I hope he makes it. He sure does look and sounds like a possible steal. 6-5, 252 pounds with speed off the edge.
I’m rooting like heck for him to make it.

I also think Rbertson was a steal
Just like signing Romo as an undrafted FA when he was projected as a 4th or 5th rd talent, getting a projected 3rd rd talent as a FA was grand larceny.

Glad we have depth
We are going to need that depth at Pass rusher..

Can we petition Goodell to increase the roster limits?
Guess we’d have to wait until next year, but I would hate to lose out on developing a guy like Robertson, even Walden.

I'd like to see the roster expanded
From 53 to 58, atleast then you have a chance to develop some players on your roster. Too often players are kept because they can contribute on special teams where another player is cut who doesn’t play special teams but has an ability to develop in another position with time. example(guard, tackle, receiver) because that player may have come from a small school.

I'd like to see roster exceptions
for long snappers or a punter/kicker exception. That’d create 2 more roster spots for guys who have minimal field time.

Roster increase
This will probably be the next hot topic for the league to debate, other than the CBA and rookie contracts.
The game is too violent and unpredictable (see WASH’s 1st day of camp) to limit the number of players to only 53. A few key injuries and your team could be in serious trouble, even if they are playing good football. Seems like increasing the roster to 57 or 58 would be a good thing for the league.

El Gato
After hearing so many positive things about El Gato’s work ethic, makes you wonder what Dallas’s research uncovered about Mendenhall.
There has to be a reason so many team passed on him, especially since he was the consensus #2 going in to the draft(by draft experts). Getting passed over for a guy who had foot surgery right before the draft..
Things that make you go hmmm…

Mendenhall wasn't the consensus number 2
Jonathan Stewart was and that’s the reason he was taken thirteenth overall by the Panthers. Stewart was thee best overall running back in the draft this year and a player the cowboys organization loved and so did I.. The minor toe surgery was just that, minor.
If you listened to jerry because of all the double talk, he said that he thought barber would be the starter and that they wanted to go with a third down/change of pace speed back, that’s why they took Jones. You draft a change of pace back in the first round!! HUH!!! Felix Jones, a back Jerry doesn’t even think is a carry the load back. Then when the cowboys drafted Choice, a value pick IMO, jerry then said they were looking for a guy that could come in and has the ability to start. Prime example of Jerry at his best double talking, more of that to come thursday with the state of the union cowboys pre training camp hour long double talk ramblings—Get your extra-strength tylenol ready!!. So we spent two picks in the draft on running backs.
Mendenhall wasn’t drafted earlier because teams didn’t have running back as their top need for when they were drafting, Both Detroit and Chicago needed backs, but they both were burnt drafting backs in Benson and Jones. The cardinals needed a corner because Rolle was moving to safety. The Broncos needed a back Shannahan doesn’t like draft backs early. The Steelers took Mendenhall because of his abillity to carry the load and was a great value for them at 23.

We needed the bodies
back there at RB behind MBIII, especially the talent these 2 have. Jerry’s plan will prove right. I’m looking more forward to watching Felix and Choice carry the ball than I would have if we just picked Mendenhall.
The knock on Mendenhall is that he was a one-year wonder in college and that can have its goods or bads. He looked like a beast in highlights I’ve seen. But they’re highlights.
BTW: Did anyone catch Tashard Choice’s acting skills at the rookie symposium? He’s pretty funny and assertive. Good guy to have on our team.

We all hope it works out for the best
But we have a history of it not working out when we passed on the best runnning back in the draft when this organization passed on Steven Jackson four years ago who fell right into our laps who wasn’t expected to be there. I dont like the philosphy of selecting a change of pace back over a lead type back in the first round. Nobody, not even the cowboys organization thinks Felix Jones is a lead type back.
by Deke on Jul 21, 2008 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not convinced they liked F Jones less
than R Mendenhall, so if they grabbed the best pick (in their scouting) they didn’t pass on a better player.
I think they were serious when they said they were looking for a change of pace guy. They want a guy who can both run and line up as a slot receiver. That adds a threat and puts more pressure on defenses. Until Reggie Bush lost his concentration on football, he was pretty successful doing that in NO and may well be again. And I am not sure he can’t be a lead back. We don’t know because he was behind a phenom in college. Time will tell…

Mendenhall
I heard on several publications he was 2, then I heard there was debate between him and Stewart.
I have to agree you draft the best RB available. You don’t want to be like NO and have Reggie Bush back there rushing 3 yds a carry as the lead back..
