The new benchmark for Canty signing ??
ok.....The ONLY player left that should be extended sometime soon, in the upcoming months is restricted free agent -DE Chris Canty, who I personally believe is our best D Lineman right now, and has shown many flashes of excellence, has remained relatively healthy, and still has much upside to become a Trevor Pryce, Richard Seymour type impact rush end in our system. I was figuring possibly a little bit more than we gave Ratliff to extend....but a very similiar DE just signed a whopping extension that very well will have an effect Jerry's and Stephen's negotiating leverage.........here's a link to the new contract signed by San Diego's 3-4 DE Louis Castillo, 43.1 million / 18 in bonuses over 5 years.......who I think is a tremendous talent, and still only 24 years old.....but he's missed 13 games over the past 2 seasons.....and STILL got this contract...
http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8096fa47&template=with-video&confirm=true
.It only makes me wonder what Canty's demands will be now in light of this recent signing of comparable talent.....I say Canty gets signed to a 5 year / 35 million dollar contract......15 million bonus.........only time will tell............

That's a good guess
Castillo’s new contract will probably be the template for Canty’s new deal. If Dallas waits too long his asking price could go even higher.

Man
Maybe those numbers are realistic, but pretty mind-blowing. Castillo is very highly regarded, much moreso than Canty, but the numbers you mentioned are probably about right for the next tier down. I like Canty a lot, but I would not commit $7m/year to the guy for 5 years based on his current body of work. Put him on the Thanksgiving extension plan.

Question?
Would you rather have Ware & Spears or Merriman & Castillo?

Hard to say
I guess I would have to say Merriman & Castillo because I think Castillo is much better than Spears, but it’s hard to know how much of those SD guys is football talent vs. pharmaceutical enhancement (both have been punished for steroid use, and I don’t buy any steroid story about innocently trying to recover from injury).
That said, I think Ware is the best LB in the entire NFL, so it’s a very difficult choice. He’s almost worth Merriman & Castillo alone to me.

I tend to believe Castillo
I dont believe Merriman’s story, but Castilo sent a letter out to all the General managers before the draft about the incident and if I’m not mistaken, Castillo was recovering from a knee injury and had doctor prescribed steriods for his knee to help recovery at the time.

Castillo did handle it the right way
But I’m generally jaded as to the whole “I used steroids to recover from injury” excuse (see Andy Pettite, Castillo, many others). For one, it’s a nice way to admit to a little wrong when you may have done something worse (and people will praise you for being honest!). For another, one of the primary benefits of steroids from a performance enhancement standpoint is in the way they boost your body’s ability to recover from fatigue/injury.
But in any event, all else being equal and with Spears as our current DE, I’d swap Ware for Merriman and Castillo with a gun to my head.

can I have a third choice
I’d take Ware and castillo.

I take the 3rd option
Castillo is a stud, but injury prone. Spears has been realtively depdendable the injury front.
Snatching Canty in the 4th round was huge.
Ware, Castillo, and Canty -Nice.

Hell yeah!
Both of those guys have had questionable steroid status. Spears ain’t that bad. He’s kinda funny in interviews too!
Besides, I’d rather have Ware than BOTH Merriman & Castillo!

I remember
Screaming for Castillo at the spot we took Spears in.

that would have been way too high
for Castillo, especially with the steroid issue. He was a late first, early second rd talent in 2005, taking him with the 20th pick would be reaching IMO.
Of course hindsight is 20/20 and it looks like a good pick now and Spears looks bad, but back then Spears was considered a much better prospect.

I agree
I don’t think anyone would have been shocked to see him go somewhere in the range where Ware was taken. I know that the plan was to take Ware or Merriman and hope Spears slid to us at 20.

I remember
the draft talk that year had us taking Spears at 11. Lame.

no regrets
Canty”s gonna get taken care of, im not ready to put Spears out to pasture yet(he was a beast at LSU), this could be his breakout year.
i never saw Spears get took out by a running back, like merriman(maurice-jones drew),im taken Ware & Spears right now.

spears sacks are the same as cantys and he does't play on 3rd downs...
and he’s very solid vs. the run, i dont get why people dont like him…i’d take ware and spears….its a no brainer…

I don't think so
Canty 43 tkls 3.5 sacks (+1 sack in the playoff game)
Spears 30 tkls 2 sacks
Do you see the difference?
Why would they take him out on 3rd downs if he could pressure the QB? They wouldn’t.

Spears will be manning the side
that keeps OL out of Zach’s face. I think Wade & Co. have plans for that because I don’t see Hatcher holding up double teams.
