How will officiating change affect DWare?
I was just reading John Clayton's latest mailbag post because he pontificated on the Cowboys needing another receiver. But before I digress on that, he answered another question about Julius Peppers and his answer got me to wondering how this officiating change (which I had not heard about) might help Demarcus Ware.
The question was:
Q: Do you think Julius Peppers will rebound this season? How much do you think his poor performance last year can be attributed to the decline of Mike Rucker on the other side, or did Peppers really lose a step?
Dan in Greenville, S.C.
A: Peppers should bounce this year for a couple of reasons. First, it's a contract year. Big money is waiting for him if he can get 10 or more sacks. Second, the league revised the officiating looks along the offensive line after tackles got away with too much holding last season. Now, the ref will watch the left side to make sure the right defensive end isn't held as much. Athletic defensive ends such as Peppers suffered the price of not having those holding penalties called. It allowed the hustling defensive ends such as Allen and Patrick Kerney to be among the sack leaders.
Assuming Clayton's analysis of how this change will affect edge rushers, it would seem to suggest a possible super monster season on top of the already monster season we are hoping for/expecting out of DWare. Thoughts?

i think
he’s due for a great seaon anyway, but if they’re watching for holding more then he stands to benefit. the biggest officiating issue i have regarding D Ware is the BS offsides call when he’s just totally jumped at the right time. I hope they make officials aware of it so they don’t take away from that part of his game.
Good point
Should we expect two offsides penalties a game against Flo instead of the usual one this year ?
i think he means holding
Flo and Colombo might end up with more holding calls, this won’t affect the false starts…
No, I meant False Start
I thought the possible holding call increase was obvious from the initial post. Here I was thinking that the tackles, in an effort to get better position on the edge rushers to compensate for not being able to get away with a little holding here and there, might tend to start jumping a little too quickly. And since Flo always has is obligatory one false start per game it might now increase to two.
Offsides
I just wish they would quit calling him offsides all the time when replay shows that he just explodes off the ball faster than even the guys who know the snap count.

Agreed
I saw him called offside twice on that play last year when he clearly wasn’t and the official just guessed.
I don’t think this is as good a thing for the Boys as it is a bad thing vs rushing DEs like Osi, Taylor, and Cole, all in the division. It will be a big challenge for Columbo and Flo.
I remember an article
talking about one of those. When watching the replay in slow motion the columnist saw “ball, Ware, ... an eternity later everybody else. The refs definitely assume he is offsides when he is running untouched to the QB.
The good news is
that I think Jerry has talked about this with refs and refs review game tape, so they’re becoming more aware of his catlike quickness. Who knows if they will have the guts not to call dumb penalties, but we’ll see.
thats ok
D.Ware is going to get his anyway, yea they was trippn with those off-sides calls,he has developed good instincts.
if the runnung game is good as i think its going to be, defenses would be on their heels, (or at least really watching for the run), leaving play-action big plays down the field all day long.
