Dallas Cowboys training camp 2008: The Battle of the Backups
The countdown on the left says 0 days and just a few hours remaining until training camp starts. I thought we would never get to this point and now the season is just around the corner.
As the Cowboys head into camp this year every single starting position is pretty much a lock. The only real fight for a starting spot could be between Anthony Henry and Adam Jones but I forsee Henry starting on opening day against his old team. No, the real battles this year will be for those coveted backup roles, specifically #3 receiver and the #3 cornerback. Will Miles Austin finally start to realize his full potential this year? Will Orlando Scandrick push first-round draft pick Mike Jenkins (who isn't in Oxnard just yet) for the coveted nickel cornerback spot? All intriguing battles that will shape the depth of the team.
To me the most important roster spots to be filled will be on special teams. Last year our coverage wasn't all that spectacular and we lost some key players to free agency. It will be interesting to see who will be able to step up into the role of leader on special teams. On a team like the Cowboys, where all the starting spots (and much of the backups) are pretty much spoken for, young players need to make a name for themselves on special teams. Being aggressive and yearning to improve upon last year will go a long way for these fringe players to make the active roster.
Just a few more hours now until we get to read Grizz's first practice report.
Various articles covering the start of camp:
Todd Archer says the Cowboys face high expectations this year.
The Cowboys have no doubt what their ultimate goal is.
Nick Eatman says that although camp is starting, there are still some unresolved issues.
According the JJT this is Wade Phillips' last season as coach, no matter what happens.

TC
IS almost here!!!!! :)
thanks BTB for bringing us through this desert journey…
now back to discussion: i’m hoping that the LG position is up for grabs – may the best man (not Kosier hopefully) win!
the other question mark i have down is NT – granted it’s a small question mark, but all the same would like to see what happens there in terms of Tank at NT with Rat at DE, etc.

you missed a few battles
Roy Williams vs. Pat Watkins. If Watkins performs really well and Roy turns in a stinker you’ll see Roy on the bench a lot this year. Marcus Spears vs. Jason Hatcher vs. Ratliff. If NT Junior Siavii makes the team then you will definitely see Ratliff push for a lot of time at DE. I don’t think Tank and Ratliff are competing against each other. If Tank does well in TC, we’ll just give Rat more time at end to give him more playing time. Also on offense second TE will be a battle. I am not sure yet if Bennett can beat out Curtis.

Tony Curtis
He is already a better pass catching TE then Bennett.

And battle for the #2 WR position
is probably the only starting spot up for grabs.
Maybe FB, because I hear Cruz is good.
I see Siavi making the team and Ratliff squeezing into DE.
That #38 sure can hit!

I forgot about Hatcher and Spears
I would really like to see Hatcher push Spears for playing time. I do think though that Spears might be a tad underrated by us. While he doesn’t have gaudy numbers he does a pretty good job of holding his ground in the running game and disrupting the lanes. If Hatcher can start causing some problems in the backfield while showing discipline in the running game I think you start to see Spears get worried a little bit. But competition is good for everyone.
It will be interesting to see what the dynamic at NT will be. We have a very vesatile and rotating defensive line so I don’t think you can look at the starting spots in black and white. Just because Ratliff is listed as #1 in the depth charts at NT, expect to see a whole lot of Tank in there. If Tank really comes into his own however, Ratliff will be able to move freely along the line and cause havoc.
I don’t think Watkins will be able to push Roy too hard for the starting spot. Expect to see Campo really work with Roy to get back to being his old playmaking self.

Considering the depth we have,
I’d like to see every couple drives, a whole new front three come in to spell the starters. Especially if they decide to start Rat at DE and Tank at NT.

spears is a lock..
if you go back to last year and watch what minnasota did to S.D. while castille was out, A.P. rushed for almost 300 yrds. then fast forword to the last cowboy v. washington game where they were putting hatcher in more in favor of spears so he could rest, and bingo you get the only guy to rush for over100yrds. against us, hatcher may have the speed to get after the qb but that does no good when he’s running right past the rb that has the ball….spears still has that parcells mentality of not giving up the edge in a 3-4 and he does his job well, teams just dont run against us. and he hardly ever gives up that edge for a rb to make a big play…i’m ok with bringing in hatcher on 3rd down and letting him go ape s@&t but no way would i trust him on 1&2 downs to contain the edge…i feel bad for spears because he’s just solid game after game and everyone say’s he’s not getting pressure on the Q.B. well if thats the case then canty has more to worry about in my mind because he’s his production is about the same as spears but he gets one more down to do it in. so i could see ratliff coming in on third downs with canty, tank, and hatcher, ware ,ellis, and spencer. then man in the secondary and a free for all to the q.b.
but dont discount spears and then hype up canty beause thats not even close to fair…sometimes the ones you dont notice in the trenches are the ones doing there job…sorry if my spelling gives anyone a headache but i’m kind of in a hurry…as for new scemes i think if our corners are good to go you’ll see alot and i mean alot of man coverage and i see us leading the league in sacks, q.b. strips, and interceptions, this year you will see why wade was the right chose for the cowboys….i’m so pumped to get this going…..

stiff competition
with the talent on the team now, there”s no room for lazy play. to get the playn time you must be on point at all times. this can only make the squad better.
