Around SBN: Purdue wins Paradise Jam Tournament 73-72

I remember reading one of Blogging the Boys articles when a QB debate sprang up. I'm a member of Hogs Haven and frequent this site a lot because I enjoy all football and the commenter's here have good perspectives on things. Reading the article game me the idea of trying to tackle "who really is the best QB of the modern era." I welcome all opinions so check it out if you want.

How Do You Define the Modern Era?

Since they started playing Super Bowls?
Since the passing rules were liberalized in 1974 and 1978?
Since the passing game was standardized in 1933?

You have to give strong consideration to Johnny Unitas, Otto Graham, Dan Marino and Joe Montana. But based on my review of the quarterback’s performance, I’ll surprise everyone and say Steve Young. He was the most effective QB ever, and the knock against him (he couldn’t win the big one) was mainly because the 49ers defense was falling apart when took over the reigns in 1991. Once they had a half-way decent defense in 1994, they ripped through the entire league.

If things continue going on their current path, I think Peyton Manning will eclipse Young.

One QB I always want to mention, because he’s always neglected, is Ken Anderson. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

great Question

How Do You Define the Modern Era?

I was listening to Peter King talk about Otto Graham, his accomplishments are amazing..

And Look at His Yards Per Attempt

In some of his prime years, they’re just ridiculous. And this was twenty years before the league made passing much easier.

Elway threw too many interceptions the first ten years of his career for me to think of as one of the truly great QBs. But around 1993 he became a great QB, got a great running game around him, and walked away with two Rings. A nice story.

I defined Modern Era

as when the league started playing Super Bowls. In my post I mentioned that the pre-modern era QB’s should be listed but I excluded them from the discussion because the majority of people aren’t knowledgeable enough to compare them to today’s QB’s

Thanks to the BTB members for their participation and I’ll respond to peoples thoughts on their “Best Modern QB” sometime tomorrow.

Here’s to another season where the NFC East shows the NFL how football is played!

Indeed

The East is back. Would you guys please help us put the Eagles back in the basement, where they belong? Then we can slug it out for a Ring?
