My impressions

Austin - A++ - caught every thing thrown his way 5 -64 yrds

F Jones A++ - Great moves

Z Thomas A+ - made some nice plays

Choice + - nice backup would not mind him playing for MBII if he gets hurt

Scandrick A+ - had hes nose on every play

Curtis - he just seem to find the open spot

A Spencer - made some nice plays

Carp F - how do you let a little full back knock you on your a** for a touchdown -

might as well trade him

B Johnson F - we need somebody besides him

Stanback F+ - drops a kick off - oh he caught one pass  for 5 yards our future number one WR  - Might as well cut his him

I actually thought Carp looked decent

Especially down the stretch, he clearly stood out from the rest of the backups. Tearrius George kind of surprised me, I didn’t expect him to make the team, but he looked better than most of the backups also.

Carp was everywhere.

Burnett was the one getting blown up. I think on that TD Carp just stood too high—he is taller. Zach is the real deal playmaking LB, though. R-E-A-L D-E-A-L.

What’d you think about Scandrick blowin up that QB? Hope he’s cool; any word?

That was a serious hit he put on the QB

The ball popped loose. He probably just got a burner, as he was back in later in the game.

And another thing

I didn’t realize Bartel was so big. If he could get some zing on some of those intermediate passes instead of rainbowing them out there, he could really push past Brad.

wow..

im in NY so i had to go online to watch.. but by the time i did it was already almost half time.. i put it on just as Felix was takin a dumpoff from johnson for like 25 yards.. weaving in, cutting back downfield.. effortless.. i really only wanted to WATCH so i could see 28 in motion, and that combined with being deprived of football for so long… gave me goosebumps.

o and the little i saw of tashard choice impressed me too.. backfield = locked up

There's no way they cut Stanback

First of all, it was one preseason game lol!

And He didn’t look too bad anyway. He was able to make the corner on the reverse even though it was read by a defender, and pick up 7 yards, that looked good. He caught one pass. He made two kick returns that were nothing spectacular but not horrible either (and that’s not likely to be his job anyway). And he made one special teams tackle. Not a bad debut.

But the fact is, he’s almost looked at as a rookie as he basically redshirted last season with the injury. This was his first training camp as a receiver. His upside potential is huge, but they don’t expect him to be able to contribute much this year. They are going to give him at least a year and probably two to develop, and rightly so. Dude is a great athlete and at this early point still in his transition he has shown at least as much progress as they were hoping. His performance in the preseason may determine whether he sees much actual playing time this year or even makes the 45 man roster on game days, but he’ll be on the 53 man roster, that’s for sure.

What has Walden shown you ?

He was invisible in that game, whereas Carp lead the team in tackles.

Even though Stanback didn’t do anything in that 1st pre-season game he’s not going anywhere, the guy is still learning the position. Jefferson and Bradford can be placed on the PS with little risk since no draft pick was spent on them, but it would be a risk to put Stanback on it. They certainly aren’t cutting Stanback.

How is Johnson's inability to throw

the ball down field Stanback’s fault?? He clearly beat his guy a lot but the qb, either Johnson or bartel, couldn’t get him the ball. Not his fault.

The Cowboys will never cut Stanback, too much talent and potential. So glad you’re not the GM.

It wasn't Stanback who dropped a kickoff, It was A Coleman..........

Stanback showed excellent acceleration during his kickoff, Did you not see him hurdle some would be tacklers ?.....gained 7 yards on an end around, and made a nice grab in traffic ….he got a B from me if we were to put grades on players..

Miles Austin certainly caught my eye, and he’s improved the most in the offseason, showed great concentration, and could catch the tough catches in traffic.. A….....AHEAD of Sam Hurd at this stage of preseason.

Felix Jones is everything I thought he’d be ..A….the next Tony Dorsett

Tashard Choice. A…a keeper no doubt…..you gotta love our backfield….set for the next 5 years there

Brad Johnson was everything I thought he was- D-....JERRY PLEASE FIND A LEGIT #2 QB

To be somewhat fair to Brad….Our second string Offensive Line was not exactly holding the fort….I couldn’t pin point who was failing…but as a unit…C-

Scandrick is one quick mofo, and gets to every play on his side…has Deion Sanders like tackling style though….an ankle grabber….but if it works it works…B+

Mike Jenkins impressed as well…a good nose for ball, and is certainly the shut down corner we coveted in the offseason. B+

Bartel actually looked like he has some promise, needs to get some throws in there quicker, but that will come with more reps…should at least be our #2 ahead of Brad for the moment. C

Did anyone notice Kevin Burnett was off his game last night ?....was gettin juked and didn’t tackle with any tenacity…grade C-

Martellus Bennett….C….He’s got a ways to go ….blew a few blocking assignments…had some tough balls thrown his way….showed good, fluid moves, and accelleration once the ball was in hand though….he’ll get better as time goes by.

Tony Curtis impressed me…seems to have trimmed down a little…looks quick…B…..we’re set at TE for the next 5 years.

Adam Jones didn’t play well…...C-

Carpenter was getting his nose to the ball, no impact plays though…but signs of improved play were noticed….C+

I missed the starters in the first cuz of NFL Network…...but we already know what we got there….that’s all for now….my grades on players that i recall…..The second and third string Defensive Line showed me nothing….no push, no pressure, no containment….LB’s didn’t make plays either….special teams…....yuck…..that is our biggest hole right now….better be shored up soon….WHERE THE HECK IS JOE AVENZANNO ???......special teams coach should’ve been replaced after last season….

Stanback's end around was nice.

He just needs to get his hands on the ball more. Thought he had a couple nice catches too.

I don’t know what was with Burnett last night. He usually blows people up in preseason. Maybe someone was talking too much in that speaker helmet.

I watched Carp exclusively on several plays and he sheds blockers pretty well. He’s not a thumper; he’s athletic, so to me that TD run was his only bad play.

The runner was already past the end line by the time Carp got hold of him....from a tough angle...Carp showed more toughness than in the past..

still has a ways to go …..but if Burnett continues with that uninspired play..I can see Carp getting some of his reps on earlier downs…

I agree but Jerry will never

trade for a backup so whoever this qb will be, he’ll be picked up on waivers. Since there is only three more weeks until the regular season, whoever we pick up will come in as the #3 qb until he can learn our offense.

I’m hoping that Romo will play some more throughout the preseason so the younger receivers will be able to play with a qb who can get them the ball.

Stanback had one play where he blew right by his man. BJ saw him and tried to get the ball to him but had a DL or LB right in is face. BJ threw up a lame duck which may or may not have gotten tipped. And Stanback had enough awareness and quickness to cut off the fly route and make his way back towards the ball. It was to far underthrown to make the catch but I still found it impressive.

by WB3forMB3 on Aug 11, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Great Analysis

Pretty much my thoughts all the way around. Bartel isn’t ready to be the 2nd QB, he needs to learn to read defenses and not stare down receivers…whichis the most important skill of a QB. Brad Johnson does this very well, but he can’t make the out or deep throws any more. If a decent veteran gets cut, we should take a long look at him.

It’s too early to evaluate Stanback, this is basically his first camp and he’s got a long way to go. We’ll be able to begin judging him next year. He’s still to raw and inexperienced.

Amendola's fumble

was the result of a good hit (helmet to the ball) and not carelessness on his part. Granted he has to grip it tighter but he wasn’t swinging it out away from his body or anything like that. It was a good defensive play by the second guy that hit him.

plus it was a decent return before that

and his first return was pretty good, too. obviously he’s going to really hold onto that ball extra hard now, but I don’t think they’ll hold it against him too much. he’ll be given some more chances and minus the fumble he actually looked pretty good.

It was stripped after the ball was dead because of forward progress....+1 Wm....

but if you remember…..He went into that area of contact at full speed, showing superior speed, and hurdled two would be tacklers like a gazelle, than slammed into a swarm of tacklers cuz his wedge blockers whiffed on every Charger in the area…..But you must appreciate the tenacity he showed going full bore into that crowd.,....one missed arm tackle, or any sort of decent blocking and he’s off to the races….....102 yards…...see ya later…..nobody is catching that dude running full steam ahead like that….

One word: Preseason

Babe summed it up very well last night. The first team was very, very good, and It’s what you expected to see. The rest of the team played like crap, and now the coaching staff has ammo to ride them hard for the remainder of the preseason.
Our running game this year could be completely dominant. If I had to take one thing out of that game, this would be it. And the versatility we could employ with those three and the genius of Garrett… it blows the mind.

Garrett needs to remember that the other QBs don't have Romo's arm

Paul Smith

this kid is a winner

Smith threw a combined 82 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions while taking his team to 3 straight bowl appearances. Smith holds the NCAA record with 14 consecutive games passing for more than 300 yards.[1]

Although possessing many skills sought in a good quarterback, Smith's career prospects in the NFL are hampered by his size and mobility.

This was not a move dictated by Paul’s performance but because of the roster,” Slough said

I don’t think by any means that Paul’s football career is over,” Slough said. “He can be a quarterback anywhere in the NFL. This is just part of the business.”

Strengths:
Very competitive…A decent athlete…Adequate bulk…Good accuracy…Terrific touch and timing…Pretty mobile…Can throw on the run…Moves well in the pocket…Real smart…Hard worker…Team leader…Has a lot of experience…Was very productive.

Weaknesses:
Lacks the ideal height that you look for…Does not have a great arm….Has trouble throwing the deep ball…Struggles under pressure…Worked mostly out of the gun in college…Will force things at times….Stats were inflated by a wide open offense.

Notes:
Was a three-year starter…Cousin, Kirk Rogers, played in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs…May not have all of the physical tools you look for but is a gamer and a true football player…Could eventually develop into a decent #2 or #3 in the NFL

Carpenter is at his best when he is able to chase the ball carrier. When asked to shed blocks he was pretty bad last night. IMO the staff is still playing him out of position. He needs to get time at the MO linebacker position because he is not strong enough at the POA. I believe he would be a better player than Burnett if given the oppurtunity to play that spot. I’m not high on Burnett either, IMO he is not a 3-4 linebacker period. He is athletic but he lacks instincts and is not a sure tackler.
