Seriously...we need a legitimate backup QB
I know that this could be said about almost any team. If Tom Brady goes down the Pats are an 8 win team. If Peyton Manning bites dirt and reinjures his knee, the Colts are nothing more than a 6 win ball club.
If, if, if....thing is I don't care about those other teams. I care about our team...the one that wears the Star on their helmet...the one that goes by the America's Team monicker.
The Dallas Cowboys.
God forbid, if Antonio Ramiro Romo missed any significant playing time during the regular season we are flat our screwed.
I know, I know, we have an excellent D and a Running Game that has a severe uptick pointing toward it's potential. And Teams have won like this before: the Ravens of '00, the Bucs of a few years ago, the '85 Bears, etc..they all won with great D's, above average Running Games and mediocre QB play (sorry McMahon fans...all 8 of you).
That gets me to my ultimate point (yes, finally). Brad Johnson and Ricky Ricardo Bartel aren't good enough to be considered mediocre!!!! Seriously, did you watch them suck hind tit last night? Brad Johnson dresses and plays the part of a 40 year old qb. The elbow pads he had on last night were reminicent of the Pistons and Lakers of the 80's. His Eli Manning like "why me?" pouting is irritating. And seriously, is he using the same exact helmet that Drew Bledsoe wore two years ago? If that doesn't transcend a big bag of SUCK, what does?
Speaking of helmets, did anybody happen to notice that Bartel's helmet had a very RB feel to it? My bet is that Jason Garrett read Richard Bartel's bio and found out that Bartel was not good enough to play QB at SMU!!!! Upon finding out of Richard Bartel's awful bag of nothing, he decided to hide Bartel's helmet. Bartel then took the helmet of the ghost of Curvin Richards and proceded to diarrhea up the backup QB position.
Can't we bring in someone that has potential NOT TO LOSE? I don't even need him to give us the ability to win. I don't want a bus driver...I want the guy that takes up the coins for the bus driver.
Okay...any suggestions out there in COWBOY NATION? Maybe wait until Sims is cut from the Bucs? Does Daunte Culpepper have a gig? I know he worked out for the Steelers, but what aboue Big Byron Leftwich? Tim don't call me Matt Hasselbeck? What about Kelly Holcomb, does that dude have a job somewhere? Tim Rattay, Chris Weinke....hell even Quincy Carter?
The last Cowboy Nation faced this dilemna was in 1990 when owner Jerry and coach Jimmy had the bearded wonder, Babe Laufenberg, holding Troy's jockstrap. When Troy went down to injury the fake Chuck Norris was flat out NOT GOOD. We missed the playoffs that year. The following year(s), Jerry, Jimmy and some times Barry brought in more servicable QBs in Steve Beuerlein, Rodney Peete, Bernie the mullet Kosar and current O-Coordinator Red Ball Garrett.
Lesson learned.
Get better backup QBs!!!!
NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Q-Smoke...seriously?
I’m fine with bringing someone in, there is definitely a need. But I don’t want to trade away any picks for a back up. Out of all of the guys you mentioned I’d go with Leftwich.

yes he was..
Culpepper the most capable, but he wants to start. Not much out there now, we waited too long.

re: Q-Smoke
The Q-Car mention was a combo: hyperbole to indicate our dire need for a reserve QB and to poke fun at the Daltunafins.
Leftwich is the only one worth a crap…but what about Holcomb (as a short term solution)?
I’m not asking that we mortgage our future by trading a high pick (1-3) or even a mid rounder (4 or 5), but is it not worth giving up a (conditional) 6th or 7th Rounder to a team for a better than average back up who (pray to Dios) we may or may not need?
Or would you prefer us wait until final cuts to try to pick up a guy like Sims, Quinn Gray (who might not make the Colts) or something of the like? The risk(s) there is that if we pick up a guy that late in the process, we are left at the mercy of quality of QBs cut by the other teams and/or that individual Qb having to learn a new playbook ‘on the fly’ during the regular season.
All I’m saying is the GM Jerry, Wade (Wilson) and Red Ball have to know that the pine-ridin’ Qb situation in Oxnard/Valley Ranch/Irving/Dallas is no muy bueno. And something MUST be done about it…..before guys become unavailable.
Oops there goes Leftwich.

Cleveland’s got him buried at #3. He doesn’t have a rocket arm, but he can hold the fort and win with this offense if needed. Not too young, not too old. Had a good college career. Maybe get him on the cheap.

Oh, man great rant
Seriously laughing over here. Babe “the bearded wonder” Laufenberg, holy god. To this day I name him as the worst QB I’ve ever seen play for an NFL team.
I agree with your point too.
Simms, TB
Josh McCown, MIA
Quinn Gray, IND
Brian Griese, TB
are some of the vets that maybe be soon available.
I’m still hoping Dallas brings in rookie Paul Smith for a look. I mean Jeff Terrell stood on the sidelines holding a damn clipboard all night, why is he still on the team.

But if they don’t at least bring him in for a look, they’ll never know. I’m not a fan of the Bartelman, I don’t see anything there. Maybe with more work (he’s already had one year, you’d think he could at least throw a nice pass by now) he’ll get better.

this is why Johnson won't be cut
and is a lock to make the 53 man roster as there is no way another player can come in and learn our offense in 3 weeks, just won’t happen.
My prediction is that we pick up another qb as our #3 qb and remain our #3 until that qb learns the system whoever he may be.

Why not look on our own team
Isaiah Stanback could be a reserve QB and who knows he could be backup and play receiver. He did play the position in college. Just a thought…

that will never happen
because he has to concentrate on becoming a receiver, so therefore him getting reps as a qb will never help that transition whatsoever.

There is a reason..
Stanback was converted, they don’t convert QB’s to WR if they can play QB..
I would rather have Bartel as a back-up. I wouldn’t mind seeing what he can do with the 1st team O.

I noticed Culpepper worked out for Steelers
He knew that he wouldn’t have a chance to compete for the starter job, yet they elected to go with Leftwich..
Possible Reasons-
1. he wants too much
2. Leftwich was actually better..
What is going on with Culpepper? Is he really waiting for a start to go down?

Here's your evidence!!!
The Steelers chose Byron Leftwich over Daunte Culpepper in part because Culpepper wants a chance to compete for a starting job.
Then why did he fly to LaTrobe to try out for the Steelers? If Culpepper believed he was going to be competing for Ben Roethlisberger’s job, then his grip on reality is even more tenuous than we thought. Until he comes to grips with the past few seasons of his career and accepts a backup job, he’s going to be out of work.
http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=NFL&ID=1227
The source for this was ESPN’s, John Clayton. He reported it on sportcenter from a source in the Steeler organization. They wanted to sign Culpepper, but he wanted a chance to compete for the starting role, Pittsburgh made it clear he wouldn’t get that chance and decided to sign leftwich instead..

Here's another article for you
The reason the Steelers picked Leftwich over Culpepper is because Leftwich felt more comfortable with the role the Steelers were offering. Ben Roethlisberger is the starter and Batch is expected to be the backup when he gets healthy again. Culpepper was hoping for a chance to compete for a starting job

umm....I've been saying Culpepper for months now...
He knows he has absolutely no chance of starting anywhere , especially this deep into camp….BUT..you know damn well he wouldn’t throw away an opportunity to back up a Tony Romo for a season, with hopes of being on a championship team and grabbing a ring, and getting paid….and IF Tony went down…he’d be able to fill in admirably with this great O Line ,and the basket full of weapons to work with….....people keep mentioning this “He wants to be a Starter thing…” he knows damn well that’s not happening….that fact that he showed up at Pittsburgh confirms that notion….....he wouldn’t need to learn thee entire playbook in three weeks…he’d be given a base play book to work with, then absorb more as the season went along…I say we get him in camp right NOW JERRY….

If Culpepper is truly happy to be a back-up with no chance of ever starting
Then I’d kick the tires just because you all have said BJ was awful on Saturday. The guy was good once, and he’s not as ancient as BJ. But make no mistake, Culpepper sucks in terms of a starting QB in the NFL in 2008. His productive days are over. If he’ll take a minimum contract, I’d give it to him at some point just so we have some insurance if Romo goes down for 3-4 games midseason.
I’d rather wait for Indy to cut Sorgi/Gray (bad the other night)/Lorenzen (good the other night), though.

The cold hard truth is that, regardless of his SuperBowl history and years of experience, Brad can’t get the job done any more. I’d rather bring someone else in now to learn the offense. I hate the idea of carrying 3 QBs and cutting a promising player that we may need later on.

It hasn't hurt in a game
But we lost a good young QB by letting him hit the waiver wire and now nobody behind Romo is both accurate and strong armed.
We keep Moore on the roster last year, and one less headache this season. Thats the lesson.
Any backups we get now will cost more in cap space and possibly future draft picks and also have to learn the play book from scratch.

Not saying it couldn't happen....but Stanback surely has the tools to be an adequate back up QB....
the dude can chuck it 70+ yards…..so the arm is there….footage I’ve seen showed great touch and accuracy as well, and you already know he runs like a beast with an attitude..
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1SIYmzKmX3E
of course i’ve just seen highlight video’s like the one above, so nobody knows for sure…....if the Cowboys had him 100% devoted to learning the system under Garrett and Wilson to play QB and WR…..he’d be a stellar back up QB / slash WR…..He’s every bit as good and more athletic than Kordell Stewart coming out of college…....I’d play Stanback on 3 weeks of practice at QB over our other options right now…......He knows the system, he’s been practicing at all three WR spots , so he knows where each receiver will be during every given play…..I say…go for it….He can still be groomed at WR, while playing scout team QB against our D throughout the year to prepare him for spot duty if needed….cuz I will say it once again..With this current bunch of back up QB’s…we would win ZERO games if Romo were to be out of action for any length of time.

Kordell Stewart should of switched positions, he had a brighter future as a receiver than a QB
Stanback’s only way to make it the pros is as a receiver. He was more of a running back/QB in college than just a quarterback. He’s not a pro quarterback.

well...ok....if you really wanted me to compare the skillset of Stanback to recent QB's of similiar style...
i’d have to throw the names of Jamarcus Russell,Vince Young, Michael Vick, Randell Cunningham, Dante Culpepper, Donavan McNabb, and Steve McNair…...every bit as athletic as these QB’s…....and if given time to focus on QB/hybrid running style ….he’d succeed in this league….but I used Stewart as an example of a player being used in different areas to fully expand his talents….
example…:
The first pre season game we have Stanback in on an end around play that gains 7 yards, The play developed slowly, and should’ve been recognized and stopped for little or no gain….his speed around the corner gave us 7 yards…....ok…now ….this take on the play….
..the DE kept contain…an OLB is coming on strong around the corner….ok….Stanback…with little room to advance, spots Witten doing a drag route across the field…..There is no doubt in my mind that Stanback hits him in the numbers and Wittens runnin’ down the sidelines for a big gainer…...To be honest….I’m quite suprised former college QB Crayton isn’t used occasionally in some sort of creative WR screen option like the scenario i mentioned…guess it’s my old OC memories coming to the forefront….but if i had the options we have on this team….i’d be a whole lot more creative, and hopefully Garrett will open up the playbook a little more this year….later in the year last season I generally didn’t think Garrett called good games,.....and it showed on the scoreboard as well…

Only thing
Every one of those other guys except Vick throw 20+ TD’s in college, Stanback threw 10. Vick is running back playing Qb and not what you want in a back-up QB with a team that features TO and Witten catching the ball. We all know about Vick’s troubles as a passer..
Vick was a winner, Stanback’s college record is average at best.
I watched Stanback in college wasn’t impressed with his ability to play Qb outside of him pulling it down and running..

Jerry is sticking with Brad
Jerry Jones downplayed the possibility of the Cowboys finding a QB to bump Brad Johnson down the depth chart.
“We really are moving along here real good,” Jerry said when asked about acquiring a QB via trade or the waiver wire. “I can’t give that a high likelihood.”
Jerry added that the Cowboys’ priority regarding the backup QB was giving Brad Johnson more time with the starters. If Johnson plays during the regular season, it’ll be behind an offensive line featuring three Pro Bowlers, so the plan is to get him more reps with that group protecting him. Wade Phillips mentioned the same thing during his press conference.
“As I’m standing here right now, I think he can be the answer,” Jerry said of Johnson.
While some have speculated backup quarterback Brad Johnson should be replaced, Cowboys officials said he would actually be receiving more reps with the first-team offensive line and receivers.Head coach Wade Phillips said the team would try to get Johnson more time with the starters in Saturday’s preseason game in Denver. The 16-year veteran wasn’t very effective against San Diego last Saturday, throwing an interception and taking a pair of sacks. He was just 8-of-15 passing and had a passer rating of only 43.5.
Johnson did have a couple of nice completions, including a 16-yarder to Patrick Crayton.
Phillips said the second-team offensive line Johnson played behind was hit-and-miss in pass protection. He chalked the interception up to a miscommunication between Johnson and Crayton. The pass wobbled straight into the hands of Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer, 10 yards away from any Cowboys receiver.
“Both of them were trying to read and they didn’t read the same thing, and he was getting hit when he was throwing it,” Phillips said. “He had to get rid of it.” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the likelihood the team would bring in another quarterback was slim, at this point.
“We want him to have more reps,” Jones said. “So when you bring somebody else in here they’re going to have to, at some point, get some time. And we think, looking at last year and just how much time he had last year in the preseason, that we need to get him more work. As I’m standing here right now, I think he can be the answer.”
While Johnson’s arm has never been the strongest in the world, he has looked better in this year’s camp than last year’s. Additionally, if a quarterback was added to the roster they would have the disadvantage of having to learn the offense. Jones made light of the difference between the starting offensive line and the group Johnson worked behind.

I figured as much
Johnson is ok if he gets time, something he didn’t have against the Chargers. His arm is very average but I think he could get by if we needed him for a game or 2.
