Kevin Burnett to have knee surgery

Luckily, he's only having his knee scoped, but he'll be out for a couple of weeks at least.

Linebacker Kevin Burnett will return to Dallas to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, according to two sources. The surgery is scheduled for Friday.

Burnett's availability for the Sept. 7 season opener at Cleveland is in question. Normally, players miss three to four weeks to recover from a scope.

I got news for you

I had my knee scoped before and it’s at least 4 weeks, if not more before he can make a full recovery. He’s going to miss the first 3 weeks of the season, if not more because they won’t rush him back.

it depends on the person

I had 3 knee scopes over the last 4 years and my recovery period was 3 weeks at the point where I was 100%. It all depends how hard you work during your rehab IMO.

A professional athlete should have no trouble recovering in that time frame so he should be ready to go by the season opener, there is no way he should miss the first three games.

took here a weak before she could chop firewood, and 10 dyas before she could carry the 50 gallon metal trach can to the curb tho!

Burnett is no Grizzly Adams

Take it from a athlete. This is not a major injury, but not minor either. It’s going to be awhile before he’s back up to where they want him to be.

horse shit!

Knees scope is as minor a operation as there is! People have them done every day and are back up and to work the same week. Now, I know with a baller it takes longer to get back to were they trust it , but its more a matter of the pain from constent ponding.

by bad knees on Aug 14, 2008 1:04 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

it is a matter of pain tolerance. Actually, on my second scope I was walking without a limp the next day. Its just a matter of icing and rehabbing, as the knee is actually structurally strong. The scope is just removing loose bodies and debris from around the joint.

I can remember a few years ago Hines Ward had a scope and actually played 2 weeks later.

at least 4 weeks no less.

before he sees the field.

I had my knee scoped during college playing ball and it took me 4 weeks with rehab for it to feel 100 percent to the point where I could run and cut without it bothering me. The average joe with a desk job can be on their feet in a week or so, but it’s a little different for an athlete.

by Boyzfan94 on Aug 14, 2008 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

well, I was at 100% not at my desk job

but as an athlete as well where I running and cutting and at a much older age than Burnett. Him seeing the field depends on how much he wants to work on rehab so its certainly possible he could play opening day.

I know your claim to be an athlete is something we are all impressed by, I know I sure am. But I don’t expect Burnett (who might be a bit more athletic than you, and definitely has access to better trainers than you) will miss the Cleveland game. If he’s scoped on Friday the 15th, that gives him 23 days before opening day on Aug 7th.

Hey know it all

he may not miss the game, but if you know anything about the injury which it sounds like you don’t it’s a 3 to 4 week process to get back as stated in the article. That doesn’t mean he will be in football shape. He could very well make it back for the Clevleand game, but something tells me they won’t rush him back. Well see, but my guess is he will miss the first game.

He's not going to miss the game

But please, do go on about your first hand knowledge, I’m really fascinated to hear all about it.

well see

Carpenter is going to get all reps in his place which mean he will be the backup to Zack more than likely come the start of the season.

His injury history

should keep his price tag down..

True

But even if he’s the heir apparent after Zach leaves you have to ask yourself if you want to depend on a guy that has to go under the knife every year.

He's not the heir apparent

Not with his injury history. Jerry is not committing to a player like that long term. If there is a heir apparent to Zach it’s going to be Carpenter, not Burnett.

if that turns out to be true

we’re in big trouble at the ILB position after Zach retires.

Keep up that positve thinking Terry

Everything about Carpenter has been so postive this training camp I don’t know why you have to think so negative about the situation. Support the guy at least……geesh….

Is a spot rookies can come in and make an immediate impact.. We can find a player in the draft.

positive?

You think him getting knocked around by SDs second string FB is positive? Thats funny.

Sure he’s looked good running around without much contact in camp, but I’ve never seen him look physical enough in real games, he’s always getting pushed around.

Carp would be a really good 4-3 OLB protected by a DE where he can run around use his natural athleticism to make plays, but he’s not tough or physical enough to play ILB in a 3-4, and until I see him toughen up some, thats my opinion.

Guess you missed what Wade had to say about Carpenters game

against SD. Wade thought he was light years ahead from this time last season and had a very good game.

Burnett got pushed around in the SD which you failed to mention. He is a China doll of a ILB and has one foot out the door which you don’t realize.

Q & A from DallasCowboys.com

Q: Kevin Burnett has a been plagued by injuries during his career as a Cowboy. Although I like the guy, we can’t re-sign everyone. Do you think Bobby Carpenter’s emergence and Zach Thomas’ ability to cover combined with Burnett’s injury history will make Burnett expendable?

Rob: Depends on how Carpenter progresses and how Thomas performs on what amounts to a one-year deal. Burnett needs a productive, healthy year to get a big offer elsewhere next off-season. He wants a bigger role on defense but has used his range and athleticism to become a fixture in the substitution packages. That’s technically not a starting job, but it’s still valuable, and Cowboys special teams coach Bruce Read told me that Burnett also is emerging as the vocal leader Keith Davis once was for the coverage units.

Mickey: While Burnett has a long injury history, he hasn’t missed that many games during his career, like three in three years, and all his rookie season. Let the thing play out, see how he plays compared to the other guys. Remember, while Carpenter’s play during camp has been encouraging, he hasn’t done it in a regular-season game much. And as for Thomas, he essentially signed what amounts to a one-year deal. No, you can’t re-sign everyone to starter’s pay, but let the market decide if the Cowboys can re-sign Burnett.

Nick: As it stands right now, I would be surprised if the Cowboys re-sign Burnett after the season. In fact, he’s going to be looking to start somewhere and it’s unlikely that would happen here. But with his injury history, including the surgery he will have Friday, he might have a hard time finding the contract he thinks he deserves

Nick nailed it right there.

Don’t buy any Kevin Burnett jersey’s this season.

ha! Carp being light years ahead

of what he was last season isn’t saying much because he completely sucked last season and would have been cut if he wasn’t a 1st rd pick.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Aug 16, 2008 9:07 AM CDT up reply actions

can't suck if you haven't played any games

It was his first season as a backup ILB. If you know anything about football you know changing positions isn’t something, rarley you can be good at immediatley.

If you want to go that route, I can say Burnett sucks because he is a one dimensional LB. The reason he is not a starting LB in 4 seasons.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

Carp is in his 3rd year

he’s played in plenty of games in preseason and hasn’t shown anything and if you know anything about football you know Burnett is not a one dimensional LB.

If he wasn’t a china doll he would have been starting by now.
