Mike Shanahan ruminates on Romo
I didn't see much notice taken of Shanahan's comments on Tony Romo. I found it fascinating. I respect his opinion as much as any coach out there today, so it carries a lot of weight with me. Instead of the usual "He's a nice player", you get insights like this:
Romo is reading coverages unbelievably. I admire how quickly he reads coverages and gets the ball to the right spot. He is going to have a heck of a year. You could see it out here today and yesterday.
Although he continues to improve his game, that has always struck about his play - the ability to go through his reads quickly and accurately. Bledsoe had a rifle for an arm, but especially later in his career just didn't seem to be able to do that. And of course we all know about Tony's unique physical abilities:
I see a difference just watching (Romo) play last year. He plays with a lot of confidence, he knows where the ball is going and if something breaks down he has the ability to make a play on his own. He can throw the ball at all different angles and he is a heck of a weapon

good find dunk
I’ve always said Romo is going to improve greatly over the next few years, the last few were learning experiences. Once this kid really learns how to play the position, he’ll be right up there with Manning and Brady and will eventually pass them as the premier QB in the game.

Romo
There is something to be said about having a franchise QB on the roster. With El Gato, Austin, and Hurd ready to contribute I expect a huge season for Romo- Barber pounding the rock we will have less 3rd and longs..

I agree
especially El Gato. Ever since they I saw Garrett’s desire to draft him I realized that they are not just replacing Julius, they are intent on adding a completely new dimension to the offiense. Although no one really talks about this, I think in some ways this is how they “overcome” the problem of not having that third receiving threat to take pressure off TO and J-Dub. This has some real possibilities.

you hit the nail on the head dunk
The Cat will take the place of this great #2 wr everyone seems to covet. I look for Romo’s passing stats to be better as a result.

+1 on that
I think most of his stuff receiving will be swing passes and the like this year, at least early on. But once he gets down blitz pickups and some the other intracacies of the RB position, then they will be able to start teaching him how to be a better receiver, running routes, adjusting routes to the defense, etc. Then he can be brought in as RB and motion out as a true WR or vice versa. THAT is when he is going to become an absolute nightmare for opposing DCs.

Right, plus
they automatically generate the mismatches they are looking for – if a team goes nickel, he can run. If they go standard he can line up in the slot or take a swing pass. Very few LBs will be able to stay with him, so if he can show that he’s a threat, he will seriously mess up some defensive schemes. And oh by the way, pick up some nice yardage…

+1
But with the emergence of our running game,Romo, who will be improved over last year and still not put up the guady numbers he established last year. If you guys will remember, last years running attack was not exactly stellar…we won games through the air. This year our ground game will be much improved (dominant…some might say) . So even as Romo continues to improve as our QB his stats may not necessarily show this.
But them again swing passes to El Gato may make up the difference…HaHa
It’s going to be a fun year guys!

agreed
someone mentioned B. Westbrook, Westbrook caught 90 balls last yr, sounds like top WR receptions to me..
I think EL Gato catches 50+ balls next year..

Or he'll generate
more passing yards for Romo if he’s effective catching the ball. For example, Reggie Bush really pumped up Brees’ numbers in his rookie season.

+1 this is the year he does that...
A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.
"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."
