I don't think we are keeping 10 o-lineman this year
McQ and Marten have been underwhelming so far this preseason. Which is kind of sad, because it seems like Marten was a wasted pick and McQ has been overhyped. One of them is probably going to be cut in order to keep someone like Hannah, who really helped himself in the second preseason game and has a lot of upside. So what do you guys think? Which one of these two disapointments will we keep?

If It Were Me
I’d let Marten go first. From what I’ve seen, neither his footwork nor strength are good. McQuisten at least can be stuck in at tackle for a few plays and be given some help with a tight end or back in a pinch.
You’re thinking the same thing as me. It doesn’t make sense to hang on to a waiver wire lineman to fill a precious roster spot. At some point, we have to recognize he isn’t NFL caliber and move on. It would make sense to only carry nine linemen this year.

Something to keep in mind
Marten was a Phillips/Garrett pick, McQ was a Parcells pick. If we cut one, that could play into who it is.

Then again
They may just tell Houck he can keep 9 lineman and to pick em. He didn’t have a say so in drafting either guy, so he may be more objective.

This is a billion dollar business
and you think if a player makes the roster, its because of who picked him. That’s nonsense. They keep the player that has the most ability, potential and upside..
This is the kind of bone head logic that I’ve read for three years now with regards to bobby Carpenter, he was picked because his dad played for Bill, pure garbage..

Parcells
I keep wondering if Parcells hyped up McQ to screw with Flo or Colombo.
He loved those kinds of games and McQ has show so little that I keep wondering if he was trying to get under someone elses skin. Maybe MQ looked good then stagnated but when I think back to Grizz’s note I cant ever really remember him being as good as Parcells hinted.

Im not suggesting they play favorites Deke
Im suggesting different people evaluate players differently. For example, Miami picked John Beck last year in the second round when Cam Cameron was the HC. Ive read that Ireland as our GM didn’t particulary care for him when we scouted him. Then this year Miami used another 2nd rounder on Chad Henne, different regime, different view point on player talent evaluation. Doesn’t mean Ireland doesn’t like Beck because he didnt draft him, just means he doesn’t think he’s that good. So back the F off on the bone head logic comment and make sure you understand what you’re reading before you pass judgement.

It's not bone head logic
If it weren’t for head office personnel having preferences, then everybody would just draft off of Mel Kiper’s board. Where the combo of Jerry and BP preferred Bobby C, the combo of Jerry and Wade would’ve probably preferred Manny Lawson. The combo of Jerry and Jimmy preferred tiny, fast Dexter Coakleys. It’s not about WHO picked him, but WHY they picked them. They pick them to fit in their system or who they think would best fit their coaching style.
Called it!

And another thing Deke
Egos DO play a role in decisions like this. You draft a guy and you have an investment of sorts in that player. If you draft a guy say in the 3rd round and he has just a horrible year you aren’t going to be as likely to cut him as another coach coming in would because that new coach doesn’t have any ego invested. If Bobby C had been a 5th or 6th round choice, he’d been gone last year no more than he plays. It’s harder to cut him because you spent a 1st rounder on the guy and it’s hard to admit you may have made a mistake. I dont care how much the NFL brings in, that’s just human nature.
Plus, money figures into it too. Don’t you think it would be much more likely for Roy Williams to have been cut if doing so wouldnt incur such a large cap hit?
So it’s not ALL about potetnial and upside.

Look how even the poll is.
I’m with you WB3—Marten sticks. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Miami pick up McQ after he’s cut.

It can go any number of ways
There’s a ton a scenarios that could play out. Didnt Houck bring in Lerkerkerkerker? He may wanna keep him instead. Marten’s a 2nd year guy and a 3rd round pick if I remember correctly, as opposed to McQ being a third year guy and a 7th rounder. Maybe they think McQ shoulda stepped up if he was going to by this point and keep Marten. Im no OL eval expert as far as footwork, leverage and balance goes so Im just running my mouth.

Yeah, I have no idea about Lerkerkerkerkerkerkerkerkerkerker
or about Marten’s progress. I just know about McQ because he’s been around and survived several years of TC cuts.
Good point about Houck. My thinking is he’ll keep the best run blocker since all these guys are versatile enough to swing from G to T.

Looking at it..
I don’t expect either one to contribute as a starter long term.. Free looks like the next tackle, so we have time to draft or pick up roster causality..
If we definitely going to keep Columbo, I really don’t care..

If you asked this before pre-season started...
I would have said McQ for certain. I’ve never liked the Marten pick, especially in the the 3rd round (I know he was rated highly, but I didn’t read anything promising regarding his footwork), I thought McQ would be a good guard/backup tackle, maybe even push Kosier a bit. But he’s struggled for some reason and looked bad in the SD game. I think it could go either way at this point, but I don’t think they’ll keep both.
Like Bigrigga said, I’d like to see Lek play, I haven’t heard anything about him yet, good or bad. I thought with his experience and history with Houck, he’d be in the running for backup RT.

There is no way we’re going to keep 4 TEs.

Hannah could see
I think they try to put him on PS, with drafting of Bennett I don’t see the need for 4 TE’s.

He has too much size and athleticism
Now that he has proven he can play the TE position, I just don’t see him getting through waivers. Moreover, he would just be one of the 8 inactives on game day.

that's fine
We should have Witten, T Curt, and Bennett for the next 5 years..
Best thing for Hannah maybe to go to another team and get his money..

From what I've seen in preseason
the TEs have been a featured part of Garrett’s playcalling. I think with what happened to Cricket last year, the OC wants to see the different abilities each TE offers early on.
Hannah does wear #44. Don’t know if that means anything, but it’s a FB number. And he’s definitely a guy they can keep on and off the PS.

Need an H Back
Fasano filled that role last year. I havent seen Curtis do it and seriously doubt that ask that of Bennett right now. He’s got enough on his plate trying to learn to be an NFL TE. SO if Hannah has some H Back ability I can see them keeping a 4th TE.

H Back
I agree. I haven’t seen much out of Cruz and that Crosslin, but I haven’t paid too close attention to them.
If Hannah has another good game, then I think they keep him. He’ll only be activated if #1 or #2 gets hurt. It’s going to be a big year for TEs in Dallas.

which is why we should be investing a #1 on an O Lineman next season...
If we don’t trade it away for a #2 WR….
I’m getting very tired with Jerry missing on O Linemen over the past 5 years……Hudson Houch around is a plus when we go to work out prospects after the season ends….Next years draft is loaded with prime first day talent at OT and OG……..I don’t see any of our current second teamers making an impact in this league, with the possible exception of Free…and he hasn’t exactly won me over yet either…
