Who will be the 6th WR?

Who will be the Cowboys 6th wide out?

Star-divide

We can all pretty much bet the mortgage on Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, and Isaiah Stanback making the regular season roster. Before the preseason began, many of us were also pretty sure that if the Cowboys kept 6 WR's, Danny Amendola would fill the final spot.

While Amendola has made some positive plays in the preseason, he has made two turnover causing plays in two preseason games.

Now I'm not getting excited about the two catches that Todd Lowber made against the Broncos scrubs, but the fact that he got some burn this week means that the staff at least wants to get a better look. There are really two questions that need to be answered.

Is Lowber's potential more valuable than Amendola's polish and added value in the return game, considering that neither player will play a big role this season anyway?

And secondly, do the Cowboys believe that they can sneak Lowber through waivers and onto the practice squad considering all of the exposure he has gotten on Hard Knocks.

Who makes the cut?

The interception was against Lowber

not Amendola, I think. There’s no way Lowber is making the final roster, imo, he’s just too raw, and that play showed it. He’s playing for a spot on the practice squad, and may have done well enough in this game to ensure that.

But Amendola is actually competing against other positions more than he’s competing against other WRs. The question is whether they keep 5 or 6 WRs and 6 or 7 CBs. If they keep 7 CBs, that probably comes at the expense of the 6th WR spot. Before this game, I think it was a three-way competition between Ogelsby, Ball and Amendola. Now, with the injury to Austin, even though it hopefully won’t keep him out of more than one or two regular season games if that, it might make them more likely to want 6 WRs as insurance. And Amendola played well enough, getting one catch with some good yards after and protecting the ball well, and getting open in the end zone for Brad if he’d kept looking downfield. Meanwhile, Ogelsby made some plays, but Ball had a tough game and he’s likely out, unless he really shows something these next two games, but his opportunities will get thinner.

At this point, I’d say Ogelsby and Amendola make the team, and Lowber makes the practice squad.

No the pick was on Amendola

they kept saying Lowber, but it was Amendola. You can see it clear.

I was going by the announcers, sorry Lowber, I take back what I said.

Amendola got open in the end zone on Bartel's scramble

for a whopping two yards. Bartel is the one who missed him open down field, not BJ.

Might be someone not on the team yet

Lowber doesn’t look ready yet, but I hope they can stick him on the PS, and even though a lot of people are high on Amendola, I’m not sure he is better than someone that gets cut from another team. As far as return ability, forget that nonsense, we saw the guy who will be our punt returner flash some of his talent last night.

The INT was against Lowber , and Amendola got free in the back of the endzone, but Bartel was the QB that didn’t see him because he was too busy scrambling for 5 yards.

Don't forget to factor in the coverage units

Amendola is just too small to be a gunner. He got thrown around all week in practice it sounded like.

Whoever makes that 6th WR slot, they will have to contribute on coverage units. That could give Lowber a bit of an advantage, IF it comes down to that.

by mhuff13 on Aug 17, 2008 12:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

But being on ST coverage units doesn't look like Lowber's cup of tea.

I don’t see him flying down to blast a returner like Hurd and Austin do. Those guys made the team years back because they are football players. He’s athletic, but still learning the game. He’ll be the deer in the headlights for a year or two.

That #38 sure should wrap up!

Hannah?

I’m actually starting to wonder if R. Hannah can beat out T.Curtis for the 3rd TE spot

by sublimezg on Aug 17, 2008 1:25 PM CDT   0 recs

third spot!!

Curtis is the second receiver on this team going into the season. I like hannah but he’s not going to make this team. Dallas will try to get him on the practice squad for another year.

by Deke on Aug 17, 2008 1:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Second TE?

Yea I don’t buy that. Curtis has played in 20 games in 2 years and has caught 3 balls for 18 yards. Granted he was the #3 TE and all 3 of those catches were for TD’s, but I’m not sure he’s guaranteed that 3rd spot. I don’t see why Hannah couldn’t beat him out before the opener.

hannah

was working against the scrub team and getting all of the looks. he is going to look good..

Curtis isn’t much of a step down from Fasano, seems a little slower but a better blocker. He should hold the fort down until Bennett is finally ready to “beast out” for real. But I would definitely put Hannah back on PS, he’s getting better but not quite ready.

I doubt it.

T. Curt looks like a solid blocker and an improved route runner/pass catcher. Hannah just needs to prove that he’s good enough for the team to keep 4 TEs. They could if they only keep one FB.

I think we keep five

They are gonna keep at least 6 CBs, maybe 7, although Ball didnt do himself any favors last night.. I think we’ll also have 3 QBs on the roster this year, one way or another. And I think our “6th receiver” goes by the name El Gato.

by WB3forMB3 on Aug 17, 2008 1:26 PM CDT   0 recs

Ball was bad

I don’t understand all the off-season hype about him. He’ll be lucky to make the roster now.

Good point about El Gato as the real 6th receiver, he’s got my vote. Plus that would open up a roster spot for QB #3, whoever they end up signing.

I'm with W3 on this one....We are only keeping 5 WR's.....as Felix is our slot WR/RB

Danny “rudy” Amedola hasn’t shown me enough to warrant a roster spot…like Tom expressed earlier, he won’t be returning anything here in Dallas….and he doesn’t make much of a gunner either…IF you can’t contibute on special teams…you aren’t being kept as a 6th WR……I don’t think Alan Ball did himself any favors…He was surely on the bubble going into last nights game, Oglesby has clearly surpassed him on the chart, and I see us only running with 6 CB’s……Lowber is nowhere near being ready to be considered for the 53 man roster either….

.I see WR-Amendola, CB-Ball, WR-Lowber, TE-Hannah, S- Davis, QB-Bartel as our 6 man practice squad right now.

Amendola won't clear waivers

Someone will pick him up for sure if we cut him.

by mhuff13 on Aug 17, 2008 6:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think he will either

There’s a chance he will but I think it’s pretty unlikely considering all the hype that’s been around him in camp. I doubt there’s a single NFL team that’s oblivious to him now that he’s spent some time in Dallas.

I really want Amendola to get a shot with the starting offense before preseason is over. I think if he gets that chance he’ll prove there’s no way we can let him go. Probably not gonna happen though… meh

by sublimezg on Aug 17, 2008 6:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I doubt that .....for the same reasons he isn't making our roster, he won't be as enticing to others either...

unless they are in dire need of a punt returner…..and he hasn’t exactly built up enough film work to prove he’s worthy for another teams roster either….

he was hyped by local media cuz of the “feelgood” story that he is…..he did go undrafted for a reason………

He'll fit in somewhere and be a good player

If not for Pacman, Felix, etc., he’d have some value here as a return guy. That was a weakness for the Boys last year. However, now the cupboard is stocked, and as a result, his ST usefulness is limited for us (as you guys noted above). Some team that needs a kick returner and solid WR will pick him up in a second. I just think he’s not the right fit for us.

All of that said, I’d like to see him play the slot with the starters and see if he can do anything.

can we teach

Lowber to return kicks? Put those burners to good use?

Romo’s love of the TE almost makes what Amendola expendable. I think T Curt and Hannah can get open as frequently as Amendola.

I want to see Stanback and Hurd catch 10 balls a piece over the next two games. I really want to see what we have in those two.

But we have a great kick returner with Felix Jones

Who I hope to see some returns from soon, maybe in the next game, although I can understand that they want to try out other guys and not put him at risk during preseason.

Same as Amendola with Pacman. there’s some value to having return skills as a backup returner, but our #1 spots in both positions are already taken. Plus Stanback has return skills as well, and of course Austin can do the job serviceably.

by scottmaui on Aug 17, 2008 6:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

imo, Stanback has outperformed Hurd, and Austin has outperformed them both...

Much to my surprise, I am now officially on the Miles Austin bandwagon..He surely has impressed me with his recent play…and I felt was vying for the #2 WR slot….injury slows that progression……but he’s locked into making the roster for sure, and will be coming on the field alot more this season……Stanback is looking like a keeper as one of two primary receivers on the KO Return unit, along with Felix Jones…….I can’t wait to see Stanback as a lead wedge blocker while Felix is returning kicks….wooo hoooo….

yea!

welcome to the Miles bandwagon! which I’ve been on for a while. More out of hope than any tangible reason, but it just seemed like he was the guy in best position to step up into the role we need, not just as a solid possession receiver that Hurd can be (and Crayton is) but with the speed to be the deep threat across from T.O.

With everything we’ve heard about Crayton improving his game as well, I think he will have a very good year and be a really reliable guy for Romo to go to, so I don’t think he’s at risk of losing his #2 spot this season, but I think who is #2, 3 or 4 on the depth chart is less important than the roles they play. Crayton may be #2 on the chart, but he is more naturally a #3 WR who works very well out of the slot, and likes playing there, whereas Austin may be #3/4 on the chart but he’s more of a #2 receiver who has deep speed and can really cause problems wide out. He always had the speed, but now that he has improved his route running and his catching, he can keep the coverage honest underneath and over the top.

Hopefully he can heal quickly and be ready to step up into that role. Whether he is #3 or #4 on the depth chart, he has shown me so far in two games that he can at least play the role of the #2 receiver on some plays this season, and by next year may be a real legitimate #2 and heir apparent to TO.

And Stanback is further behind Miles in his development but is also fast and more physical with even greater upside and could even surpass him, so they could be our #1 and #2 speedsters 2-4 years from now. I know that’s what Jerry is hoping!

stanback = lowber

we already have a guy who has great raw talent in stanback we can’t carry 2 guys just for their athletic talent we have to have another guy who can contribute if needed especially with miles austin getting hurt.

haven’t seen much out of mike jefferson was hoping he would come up big but not so far.

so maybe we only carry 5 wr’s.

no team will take a chance on lowber because if you take him off someone else’s practice squad you have to add him to your 53 man roster and he’s not ready to play yet.

3 QB's

Like it or not, this team HAS to carry a 3rd QB on the active roster just because Brad Johnson can’t execute the team’s offense with downfield passes and Bartel is too big a project for a team with the aspirations that Dallas has.

If that turns out to be the case, and rumor has it that Dallas is interested in John Beck (odd man out in Miami?), say goodbye to Bartel.

I also don’t think they can afford not to carry 6 WRs given T.O’s age and how that impacts the likelihood of further late-season injuries. I think the coaches WANT to like Amendola because of what he does in practice, but I’m not sure he has more upside than a guy like Lowber and don’t think Jim Garrett’s love-jones for Lowber won’t weigh heavily here. I’m also thinking that Dallas is hoping for some pre-season cuts that could help them add a deep threat to pair with T.O. and allow Crayton to move to the slot.

So, the odd man out appears to be Ball. Oglesby sneaks in with Adam, Orlando, Jenkins, Henry and Newman.

Another really interesting position is the RB spot. It’s crowded there and I wonder who comes out on top. Would love to see someone start a thread on that group.
