Cowboys interested in Beck

I spend part of my work life chasing rumors and today is no different.

So far today I have chased two rumors that continue to persist and I am ready to report to you the first is true, the second is not.

It is true the Dallas Cowboys are mildly, and I do stress mildly, interested in quarterback John Beck. The Cowboys have winked, hand-signaled, called or e-mailed the Dolphins (however it is they do it) that they would be willing to part with a low-round draft pick for the second-year player.

Obviously, Beck remains on the Dolphins so nothing has actually materialized on that front.

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2008/08/addressing-toda.html

I, for one think Dallas will be bringing in another Quarterback to compete for the number two role, regardless how well Brad Johnson played last week in Denver. At this point I wouldn't mind throwing a late round pick at someone, either to Miami for Beck, who is 27, or Tampa for Simms to get one in here to start to grasp the playbook. Dallas had scouts at the New England/Tampa game last night. If dallas brings in either Beck or Simms via trade, that's a clear indication that letting Moore go last year was a major mistake, something alot of us cowboy fans thought was a major mistake at the time. I suspect Dallas will carry nine offensive linemen instead of ten to gain the extra  spot on the roster to carry three quarterbacks. Right now, its somewhat of a rumor, but Mami's GM, Jeff Ireland wasn't high on Beck during the draft last year.

Here's a video of the mediots talking about Beck and his ability when he was drafted in the second round last year by Miami..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MflFK7Q0o9E&feature=related

Here's some of Becks work in his NFL debut last year against the Eagles. Remember he played for a horrible Miami team.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXLIVDOawcI&NR=1

Todd Archer reports,

According to the sources, the Dolphins contacted the Cowboys - and other teams - about Beck shortly after coming to terms with Pennington. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has expressed a desire to find a long-term backup to Tony Romo with Brad Johnson turning 40 next month.

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/08/no-beck-talks-yet.html

So it was the Dolphins that contacted the cowboys about Becks availability. Jerry is listening, so I think they'll do their homework on the kid to see what the thinking is in the scouting department about his ability.

I think Miami can throw us a bone here

How many reliable players have we gifted to them this offseason? All offers equal, I think they’d trade Beck to Dallas in appreciation for what we’ve sent over there.

I’m not too sure I want him, but he can’t be THAT bad, right??

That makes sense. Matt Moore was a mistake, but giving them a 6th or 7th for Beck is worth it..

Beck is worth more than that

I would give a 5th rounder for him

I rather Have Paul Smith

at least hes a winner -

but a Beck trade for Hannah

theres no room for Hannah – so he will be cut an make the trek to Maimi

I WOULD NOT TRADE A DRAFT PICK FOR HIM

Smith is so underrated. He wouldn’t cost a draft pick either.

Beck looked good playing at BYU, but so did Ty Detmer

I would hate to give up anything of value for Beck when Ireland didn’t rate him highly in the draft.

Isn't BYU one of those pass happy offenses?

I know Colt Brennan was in one, but he’s got moxie.

That #38 sure should wrap up!

Ireland

Is not the Messiah, he can be wrong like anyone else..

I say trade a 5th or less.

Why trade anything

He’ll get cut, their GM (Ireland) doesn’t think much of him. I don’t have anything against Beck being brought in for a look, just not worth a pick.

There are going to be plenty of backup quality QB’s either cut outright or attempted to be placed on a team’s PS. I say wait until then, at this point there’s only 10 days from cuts, that’s not enough time to make any significant difference in a QB learning the Dallas playbook.

they seem content

bout the situation, as long as Brad looks ok they"ll continue on. that position seems to be based on an (as needed )basis for now.
We"ll see

Its a need

The backup quarterback position has been ignored by this team for three years now, it’s time to get a younger option with some upside that if he works out, you can then flip for some picks down the line, if that only costs a sixth round draft pick, I say go for it. Beck is a second round draft choice, and a guy jerry liked last year. We have a boat load of picks next year, so giving up a late round pick next year isn’t a loss.

Agree with Deke

I have faith they will bring someone in.. I do feel better about having Brad back there until a younger QB can come in and learn the system..

I'd take a shot on him..........

watching tape on him, appears to show promise…

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."

this what I just read

Most of the scouts in attendance represented teams that are thin at quarterback.

Minnesota: Already was on shaky ground with Tarvaris Jackson, Gus Frerotte and Brooks Bollinger, and now Jackson has a sprained MCL.

San Diego: Has Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst behind Philip Rivers (and Randy Mueller, the man who drafted Beck last year, is now an executive with the Chargers).

Indianapolis: Peyton Manning is out all preseason with a knee infection, and the Colts are stuck with Jim Sorgi and Quinn Gray for now.

Kansas City: The Chiefs are a mess at quarterback, with Brodie Croyle trying to prove he is the QB of the future and Damon Huard trying to prove he still belongs in the league.

Baltimore: Cam Cameron’s new team drafted Joe Flacco, but perhaps Cam wants to take Beck back under his wings.

The Bills, Jets, Steelers and Giants were also at the game. Who knows, maybe they were taking a look at Beck and McCown, too?

I'm not excited at all about Beck's name.

Maybe I don’t know enough about him to warrant any intrigue, but nothing about him sticks out to me. Still think Dallas should look for a more athletic backup, but I understand that the pickings are thin right now.

Pittsburgh: please waive Dennis Dixon. Won’t happen, but it’s a good dream.

I do need to.

There’s gotta be a replay of Miami’s game this week. But that one’s all about Chad.

I’ll definitely record their next two because BP will be trying to interest teams and hopefully get Sparano to give Beck a bunch of snaps.

Or I can just youtube him and get back to this thread after I do with a scouting report.

can u believe

They gave away Chambers and Welker last year, they wouldn’t be that far away…

They needed Bill and Ireland…

Why the F

didn’t we snatch up chambers last year? Think how pretty we would be sitting today.

I AGREE 10000%

Chambers instead of M. Bennett- I’ll take that..

And Taylor and Zach this year

Those guys have to totally restock the fridge.

Ricky looks good in preseason though. I think they’ll overachieve a bit this year with Chad at the helm. Won’t come close to making the playoffs, but they’ll play their a$$es off and annoy the Pats I’m sure.

That divis, with Buff and the NY Brets, will make sure the Pats don’t go 16-0 again.

I continue to hear it

I don’t see it. Everyone says they will win 5 games, I am not sure how..

Who is left on that D and you are starting a Rookie at LT? The WR’s are unproven and Ronnie Brown is coming off a major injury? Why do they improve 4 games? Parcell’s is not the coach, they have a rookie coach..

I don't think they'll win 5 games.

Maybe 3 or 4. Joey Porter’s the only guy I know on their D.

Okay, I looked at some youtubes on Beck. He does look like he can move around in the pocket and was forced to often in the game against the Iggles with that shotty Miami Oline. Against Oregon he scored with his legs, wasn’t fast but had some young, Aikman-like agility.

Many of his pro passes were catchable, but the WRs failed to fight hard enough for the ball (I still think Ginn looks better than people give him credit for).

Didn’t see Beck throw many deep passes, but his midrange ones looked okay—accurracy may be his strength.

Look at their roster Big

You will recognize a bunch of the names on there. Keith Davis, Nate Jones, Akin Ayodele, Jason Ferguson, etc.

But not having much left over may be a good thing considering how dismal they were last year.

Perfect situation for a guy like that..

IMO

I think they have to let Beck go sooner or later. Pennington’s the starter for now, but I bet they wanna get Henne in their next year. ANd you dont want two young high pick QBs on your roster or you end up with the inevitable QB controversy.

BUt the organization DID give up a 2nd rounder for the kid, even if it wasnt the current regime. They are going to try and get something in return.
