Spencer Increased Reps. Ellis Not Happy?
This from the DMN Blog. Ellis better get used to this because it's clear Spencer is going to see alot more playing time than last season.
5:17 -- DeMarcus Ware (head) will practice, but Anthony Spencer will still get first-team reps with Greg Ellis (back) watching. Phillips gushed about Spencer this afternoon. "Anthony Spencer has done extremely well. He looks better than he did last year, and I thought he did a lot of good things last year."
5:22 -- Well, apparently Greg Ellis didn't get the memo that he's not practicing. He just walked out onto the field wearing his shoulder pads. You don't think he's paranoid about losing reps, do you?
5:51 -- Another exciting Greg Ellis update: It doesn't look like he's actually going through drills. He pretty much a spectator in shoulder pads at this point. I'll let you know if he gets reps during competitive stuff later.
6:31 -- Some red-zone inside run notes: Jay Ratliff played DE. Marcus Spears played NT. Starting to wonder if Wade Phillips fibbed about those moves not being permanent. ... Anthony Spencer got the first-team reps at LOLB with Greg Ellis sitting out. Spencer had a TFL. ... Andre Gurode was flagged for holding Spears. ... Justin Rogers is getting reps at strong ILB and ROLB. ... They ran a cute play to try to get Felix Jones outside. Jones lined up as a WR to the right and motioned into the backfield behind Marion Barber. They faked a dive right to Barber and flipped the ball left to Jones. It might work against some teams, but DeMarcus Ware met Jones several yards behind the line of scrimmage.

If this persist, it should be only a matter of days before Ellis complains.

I read
That Spears and Ratliff have asked for more time at the new positions..
Best thing for Ellis is Spencer’s increased playing time to keep him fresh..

I read that too bout Spears and Rat
I like their attitude.
At this point, Spencer needs the reps and Greg needs the rest. I hope he could just be cool with that because it’s a long season.

not true
Ellis is fine with it, he knows he’s the starting OLB opposite Ware, that won’t change this season.
Wade is smart to rest his older players, T.O. should be watching a lot of these practices as well.

Mickey said T.O. looks like the most improved player.
Maybe he does need the rest later this TC, so that the other guys can get reps at #1.
So excited about the HOF game tomorrow. Finally, football is here!

Just read that Ellis has a sore back.
So let’s rest Grandpa.
Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said Greg Ellis would miss Friday’s afternoon practice with a sore back, but Ellis is dressed out and joining the fellow linebackers in individual drills.Ellis is sort of trotting around, but not really doing anything strenuous. We’ll see how much team work he does, if any. Phillips initially said he would hold him out strictly as a precaution.

dont get riled up about ellis
so many people get too riled up about ellis.
some idiots were saying jerry should cut him last year because he moaned about playing time. please. he is old. he is good. he get mad about perceived slights and uses that as motivation. its great. anything that keeps him playing with edge and attitude is good for the team.
he is a good player and good team player. let him keep his edge. its far better than becoming content and unmotivated like roy

I loved watching
Spencer while I was at Purdue and I cannot wait to see what he can get done on the field for the Boys with more reps. Ellis needs to understand this is good for his career.

Spencer will displace Ellis as the out-and-out starter by midseason
And Ellis will have to get over it—but after crying about it for approximately 2 weeks.

Doubt that unless there's an injury.
But I do think Spence will get half Ellis’ playing time as the year goes on.
My question is:
Why don’t they put Spence in Ware’s spot sometimes to give the Beast a breather, so that he and Ellis can be on the field at the same time?

that won't happen unless Ellis gets hurt
Spencer will start in 2009, not this year. It doesn’t matter though as both will see the field a lot.

Ellis was quoted the other day saying he was fine with situation
He is having back problems, nothing serious, and thats why he was sitting out.
They are going to make sure Ellis is well rested and ready for the regular season, he’s going to play a big role on the defense as OLB and on nickel. I don’t think he’s going to bitch about anything this season.

someone who knows what their talking about
This one probably is a no-brainer, but as well as Anthony Spencer seems to be playing behind Greg Ellis – and in his place the past few practices with Ellis resting a sore back – don’t be surprised if he gets some of Ellis’ snaps this year. The Cowboys need to get him on the field more, and must preserve Ellis who turns 33 next week while we’re in Denver.

And no that wasn’t my quote, but it should be because I said the exact same things about this topic. Spencer is going to get more snaps than Ellis this season.

thats not what the quote says
Spencer will get SOME of Ellis’ snaps this year, I see where it said more.

We already know that Spencer will
be playing on 1st and 2nd downs so Mickey is probably talking about Spencer taking away from other snaps Ellis would be getting on 3rd downs and special packages. Regardless, Spencer is going to see more time than Ellis this season. They have to because Ellis is gone in 2009 I predict. Spencer is the future so they need to give him as much work as possible this season.

they don't have to
If Ellis accepts being a part time passer rusher next season, they’ll keep him because he’s under contract, they’d be stupid to cut him as pass rushers are too valuable.
Like I said, when the Cowboys starting defense trots out on the field Sept 7 against the Brownies, Ellis and Ware will be our starting OLBs, count on it.
Spencer doesn’t need to start to see plenty of action.

I don't see them getting rid of Ellis either
Until they develop somebody under Spencer, then Ellis will be a Cowboy into retirement.

I still stand by my opinion
I think Spencer’s improved play will earn him the starter’s spot regardless of Ellis. The kid is waiting to bust out, while we’re talking about Pacman.

who cares who starts
The fact is both Spencer and Ellis will see alot of time on the field including both at the same time. Why people get caught up in who starts is irrelevant. You need four good outside pass rushers in this defense, we have three so far. It’s all about having a good rotation to keep players fresh, I dont care who the starter is.

bravo Deke.....totally agree....
it’s about rotation and quality depth…....same goes with the D Line…..I don’t care who starts, who comes in during nickle, who sits during 3rd and 8,.......it’s about keeping quality players fresh, and putting them in during situations of strength….........Roy Williams and Marcus Spears will be coming out on obvious passing downs…..Ellis will see most of the base OLB plays…..both Ellis and Spencer will be in on 4 down linemen sets, either at DE or OLB….etc….Henry will be playing nickle safety…...etc. etc. etc. etc…....we’ll be playing 5 CB’s at times…....we’ll be playing MBIII and Felix Jones at the same time, with Barber playing FB, Jones splitting out as a slot WR…..Witten playing outside at WR….......this is how you wins championships….....you stay fresh, you stay strong, you put your ego’s aside and work as one, you get you best players on the field during situational schemes…..........jus git it done…..............out.

Accidental you nail it everytime...
This is the facts:
Spencer will be starting first and second downs.
Ellis will come in on third downs and special packages. Call him a part-time pass rusher because that is what he will be no matter how Terry or whoever wants to spin it.
Ellis won’t be here next season. He will be 34 and it’s only a matter of time during the season before he complains like he always does. It will get on Wades nerves enough for them to trade him to Miami or release him during the off season.
If it really comes down to a depth issue which it shouldn’t, Carpenter can be the back up to Spencer next year,
