I'm feeling better about our coaches
I had wondered whether our coaching staff was "too nice" to make the players accountable.

After watching Hard Knocks 3, here's what I liked:
1) Brian Stewart chewing out the team. It wasn't a Bobby Knight level tirade, but he was chewing pretty good. I liked it, and I liked the frustration on the sideline by him and Wade.
2) I thought Wade seemed really in control when he addressed the team. He's so soft spoken and aw shucks in press conferences, but when he was talking about the 2nd units failure vs. San Diego he was really stern and effective I thought.
3) The team may publicly put out that "Martellus Bennett is making progress...this is just TV editing..." But privately...this guy is Antonio Bryant Jr. He's like Nook LaLoosh in Bull Durham "Million dollar talent, ten cent head." Guys like this always tease, but never exceed league average players. He's just not wired to do the things you have to do to be an NFL star.

He Really Looks Clueless
He doesn’t seem to have the fiery personality that Bryant did. I wouldn’t expect Wade to get a sweaty jersey in the face, but to me he looks absolutely lost. Going out on a very large limb, he might have some kind of cognizant problem, like ADD. Watching him he acts like a small child when Garrett is trying to teach him something. He reacts slowly and defiantly. He could have a hearing problem and just doesn’t understand what is said the first time (my problem). Or at the other end of the scale, he could be a complete moron. All I do know is Hard Knocks is making him look like a fool.

I think that exchange with him and Garrett
Was just him messing around, not being outright petulant. It’s just one of those context things. And it wasn’t just the coaches saying he had a great week at practice, the media present said so as well. And it showed in the game.
The conversation between him and Garrett on the phone after his “big” play is the perfect example of his personality. He could have been jumping, pumping his chest, the works. Instead he’s just business as usual which for him is kinda blah compared to others on the team.
It’s just the way he is, I think. And as long as he holds his blocks and makes catches, I could care less if he messes with his coach about his undershirt.

I think Garrett likes him.
Bennett = Garrett’s pet cat.
Hard Knocks is just paying alot of attention to him because the rest of the team is so perfect that it makes him a good contradictory storyline.
And this guy in no way resembles Antonio Bryant. Bryant was a different kind of cocky. Bennett is just playful and funny. Not everybody on the team needs to be superserious.

He's not exactly like Bryant
Obviously, Bryant was more of an angry headcase, and Bennett is more of a lazy headcase. Either way, they both had “bad wiring for NFL greatness.” Bennett has more athletic talent than Jason Witten. But he’ll be lucky to have the career of Tony Curtis.

I said it before, and I'll say it again
If Hard Knocks didn’t exist, nobody would be smearing Bennett so badly. While he does seem to have an attitude that isn’t too compatible with authoritarian coaching, a lot of different players with a lot of mindsets in their rookie year have been successful. Don’t believe you are seeing the full story. This show is edited to create storylines.
Have any of you guys ever been in a situation at work where you had a boss ride your ass, you resented them for it at first, but in the end were grateful and a better employee? I have, and I can relate to Bennett a little. He’s still green.

Hard knocks, the internet and blogging take the micro-analysis of teams and players to dizzying new heights. 10 years ago, we read the recap of playoff games in the newspaper and subscribed to Dallas Cowboys magazines to try and get the inside scoop. Now the fans have instant access to practices etc. and everything gets blown out of proportion one way or the other.
Same case with politics, hollywood etc, etc. I tell you all that if somebody gave me a million dollars when I was 21, the things I would have done would make Tellus look like a saint. The kid will be fine and he WILL produce this season.

Words of wisdom, Joos.
What did we all hear about Bennett before Hard Knocks? Just that Peter King said he walks slow. Now, everybody has a crystal ball and is labeling him a bust. Can’t we just support our team? Opening Day is fast approaching!

nobody is labelling him a bust at all
The coaches aren’t riding him at all, they’re trying to teach him, they’re trying to motivate him, get him to be ready as a pro to go out and produce when called upon. It’s his poor attitude that poeple are mentioning, his conduct throughout the series is evident, its not scripted. The motto of the team is practice like you play, he was asked half a dozen times to tuck in his shirt, instead of doing what was asked of him, he went on sulking like a two year old. He said he’s one of the top players drafted. Based on what, this is the pros, not college, and in college, he was used more as a blocker. Maybe if he didn’t have the kind of attitude he shows now in the pros, the coaches might of used him more in college. The kid acts as if he’s the next best thng since sliced bread, he s NOT!!! If he doesn’t change his attitude and grow up and pay attention and follow the coaches direction, he might find himself like alot of others that think they were the next best thing since sliced bread, TOAST!!!

Umm
I’ve seen people on this site refer to him as Martellus “Bustet” and stuff like that. The coaches would never think that. Their trying to make him part of the sandwich.

I understand what you're saying
Obviously his back-talking and such are not scripted; they happen. What I’m saying is that there may be (and probably are) times when he immediately does what the coach says, but they don’t show that on Hard Knocks because it doesn’t fit the storyline. Obviously a 7th round pick or UDFA can’t get away with this stuff, but all I’m saying is that we probably aren’t seeing the whole story. If we were, I think the TE coach (forget which Garrett he is) would be blowing a gasket over the t-shirt thing. We see Pacman and Roy joking around with Campo instead of immediately following orders, but nobody is going nuts over that.
All I’m trying to say is that this guy probably works harder than 3 episodes of Hard Knocks indicate, and even if he doesn’t, the coaches can instill that work ethic in him. Not every player trains the same way or receives coaching the same way, especially as a rookie. I think it’s fair to question his attitude, but I think people have gone way overboard with it.

its all about game time
i care about what happens on the field, i see improvement from game to game, thats a plus to me.
the coaches look like they have all these situations under control, including turning Bennett into that beast he can be.

Bennett will be a star in this league........it's all i'm going to say about the subject...
A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.
"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."

Yes! Some faith!
This isn’t Atlanta. We have the coaching staff, stable of vets, and the right winning attitude to help this kid realize his full potential.

Leaders in the locker room
Simply can’t imagine TO, J Whitten or T Romo letting Martellus slide if they perceive it to be a problem. Early in my work career it was called the ‘Dutch Uncle’ chat-someone whose effort, professionalism and results spoke for themselves pulled a non-performer aside for some tough, firm counseling. The difference being it came from a peer, not a superior and the problem performer was more likely to listen to the advice rather than dismiss it. Can’t help but think someone is going to whisper in his ear to wise up at some point.
