Kosier could be out six weeks

Injury report from Friday night's game.

Left guard Kyle Kosier could miss up to six weeks because of a sprained right foot and hairline fracture. Kosier left Texas Stadium in a walking boot.

Joe Berger is the favorite to take over for Kosier.

Also, wide receiver Isaiah Stanback suffered a dislocated left shoulder on a kickoff. The Cowboys will wait to see how Stanback responds to treatment before determining if he needs surgery.

The biggest blow to the team is Stanback, we doubt he will play on Thursday night against Minnesota, because it cause depth issues at wide receiver

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/08/kosier-out-six-weeks-stanback-hurt-too.html

Certainly not the news anyone wanted to hear especially how well this O-line played Friday night. Most hoped it was just  a sprained ankle but he's also got a hairline fracture. I guess Joe berger has to step up in his absence. You may see now just how valuable Kosier is on this offensive line.

Stanback, on the other hand may be lost for the year with another shoulder surgery, depending on how he takes to treatment. If the club suggests surgery, Stanback will surely be placed on IR. We are certainly getting thin at the receiver position, cant afford any  injuries to the starters.

I'm sure Wade Phillips will bring up Stanbacks injury to justify his reasoning for NOT putting Felix Jones back there on kick returns.

Kosier is very underrated

Luckily the Cowboys run a lot to the right side, but Kosier has been steady for us. Time for Berger to show what he can do.

any chance Gurode is moved to LG?

to me, abortion is not a religious issue, it's a common sense one...

by Longhorn on Aug 23, 2008 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

Gurode has blossomed as a center, but always struggled when he played guard.

by kindablue on Aug 23, 2008 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

And

We’d be replacing a Pro-Bowl center with a spare part (Proctor) who’s struggled at that position.

gurode

gurode tended to make a lot of mental mistakes at OG and at C he seems much more dialed in mentally, i would call it maturity but he was sharp at C as a rookie too.

plus if gurode played OG i’m not sure anyone else could handle shotgun snaps as well. its tougher than you think to overshoot someone as athletic as romo

i always thought kosier was overrated

overrated, weak and most likely to be replaced.

and if kosier is underrated, then who on the line is overrated (or correctly rated)

put another way, if you told me an OL had to be hurt in order i would pick: kosier, kosier, kosier, bigg, gurode, colombo, flo

Berger

yup time for him to step up. Nate N was saying he looked really good earlier in camp, and he’s in a position to know what he’s talking about, but Berger didn’t seem like he kept impressing. But we’ll see now. Kosier is probably the weakest lineman we have, so if we have to lose one we’re fortunate it’s him I guess, but that’s not saying he’s not a very good player also, when you’ve got arguable the best line in the league with 3 pro bowlers. They were freakin dominating last night, and all the other weapons looked so good because Romo had all day to throw and Barber had huge holes to run through.

I’m not sure how they can say the biggest blow is Stanback. Yeah, he was expected to play next week in the most meaningless game of the season, but he wasn’t expected to contribute much if any at receiver this year. If it wasn’t for special teams he might not even suit up on the 45. And the special teams is where we’ll miss him. But Kosier is a far bigger loss.

Amendola

I was thinking his chances of making the team were slipping before the injury to Miles, but now with Isaiah injured too, I think it very likely that he makes it now. Even with his mistakes, he seems like he’s far enough along the receiver development curve—good hands and route running (when he’s running the right route)—that he could be reasonably dependable. He may not have the long-term upside as Isaiah may, but he could be more ready to contribute this year if needed. Even if Isaiah’s injury turns out to be relatively minor, I could even see Danny passing him on the depth chart.

I see the WR as

TO
Crayton
Hurd
Austin – but who’s
Jefferson
Amendola
Stanback – Who cares

you think

jefferson higher than amendola now?

he made some good plays, and bartel likes him, but do you think he’s better than Danny?

didn't say he was better

but he does do some things better. He runs better routes than Stanback, and he catches better than Stanback. Do you dispute that? So maybe he’s not better overall as Stanback is much more athletic and physical, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think he might be a more reliable back receiver up this season.

Anyway, as far as receiving, Stanback is 1 for 9 yards, Danny has 2 for 47. Both have shown return potential, and both have fumbled the ball once. I like Isaiah, but how exactly has he shown more than Danny?

by scottmaui on Aug 23, 2008 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

correction

Stanback is 2 for 14 this preseason, but the basic point remains…

by scottmaui on Aug 23, 2008 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions

And you somehow were to form a conclusion that Danny "catches better" ????

I have yet to see Stanback drop a ball thrown to him ?? ….SO,…Are you simply assuming that Danny catches the ball better ??

Runs better routes ???? …ask Bartel if Danny runs better routes….seems to me, he faked out his own QB, which cost him a score and INT….

Stanback has shown he can get down the field on kick returns….indicitive of his 44 yard return last night…..and he’s 5x’s more physical and can be called upon to work on kick coverage teams…where as Danny boy would be a major liability to work on an already very suspect special teams unit……..

Simply stating that if Austin and Stanback were not injured right now…There would be absolutely NO chance of Danny boy making this squad…..

from all camp reports

Wade and others have said Danny catches almost everything thrown near him. whereas the reports on Stanback have said he has inconsistent hands. I’ve also read from multiple sources that Danny is a precise route runner (despite that mistake in the Denver game), and that Stanback still needs a lot of work in his routes. I’m not assuming anything, I’m basing it on multiple reports out of camp. If you want me to go find some of those reports to substantiate it I can.

I agree with you re the return and coverage games, and Isaiah being much more physical player, but the statement I made is that strictly at the WR position, Danny might be a more reliable backup in the short term, and I stick by that.

We should have an oppurtunity

To see what Amendola can do with Romo during the season.

assuming he makes the final cuts........

which I don’t see happening as yet………maybe our last pre season he shines and wins over Jerry and the staff……..but he is no lock to make this team…even with two of our top WR’s out for a period of time…

Mike Jefferson is the guy Danny should be trying to out play now…

I don't think so

we’ll probably see him for the final preseason game, but they may be thinking PS with him, if they think he has the athletic ability to be a good project.
