Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Making the most of a bad situation

Realistically, if I were told a week before training camp that either Austin or Stanback would not make the roster I would not have been that concerned.  With TO, (hopefully) Glenn and Crayton as the mainstays and Hurd, Austin and Stanback as the hopefuls and Lowber, Amendola and Jefferson as the long shots it could have actually been good news if there was too much talent to have both of them on the team. Not now... What a difference a month makes.

Now the WR depth is:

1. TO

2. Crayton

3. (Austin)

4. Hurd

5. (Stanback)

6. Amendola

7. Jefferson

8. Lowber

With the #3 and #5 guys out, we are now one shaken-up player from looking at Amendola or Jefferson in a 3 WR set (which could limit our ability to take advantage of a paper thin Cleveland secondary).  Also given the combined youth and inexperience of the WR corp ex TO its tough to expect any of the guys to be comfortable at multiple wide out positions.  Given the increasing complexity of Redball's offense, this is a mild concern -- not as a big a concern as the ultimate talent level of the 4th WR but still a concern.

It increasingly looks like we will start the season with 4 players who cant play on the roster and two WR's unable to suit up.  My question is:  What does this mean for the rest of the roster?

1. Is this the end for Danny Amendola?  I would not be surprised to see the team wait until the first week of the season (or whatever the date is that you can sign a vested veteran and not have his salary guaranteed for the full year) and sign Glenn or Horn to a low risk contract.  If that doesn't happen I wouldn't be surprised us to pick through another teams final cuts for a potentially less talented but more experienced WR.  It is starting to look like hiding an street free agent on the roster to see if he develops is a luxury we can't afford - especially if he can't fill in on coverage units.

2. Does this mean we carry 7 WR's? If we carry 6 with 2 hurt, we are dangerously thin.

3. If we are looking at starting the season with 4 players who cant play (3 of whom were special teams contributors) do we start the season with fewer offensive linemen who can't help on special teams?  Is Martin, McQ, Berger or Lek the loser here?  Do we have to cut one (or more) and hope we can pick them up when if we sign a vet WR after week 1 and cut him in week 4 or 5?

4. What is the impact of the increased need for gunners?  Does it impact the secondary situation?  I think we can make up for the loss of return men (Scandrick, Pac, Felix, Jenkins, Newman, and others can return the ball in  a pinch) but we need people to step up and handle coverage.  Does this mean a guy like Hannah gets a second lease on life he can be effective?

5.  Any other ways Jerry can manipulate the roster?

Dude?!

Not to question your sanity, but you have Austin at #3(he’s #4), and Stanback at #5(He’s #6).
Amendola is a better receiver than Stanback. One fumble, and an ill-advised pass by Bartel is no reason to treat Amendola like some schmuck.

Reasons to NOT worry about this:
1. Even if we carry just 6 WR’s, how often to we use a 4WR’s set?
2. Bringing someone in this late is foolish unless they are a difference maker, and #4 recevier on the Cowboys is a priority that ranks slightly higher than backup QB.
3. Special teams (especial kick/punt coverage) is a legitimate issue, and the problem isn’t the lack of talent to work with…

well

i thought austin had passed hurd but thats conjecture. i thought stanback would make the roster before any of the guys i listed after him b/c he’s a project of jerry’s and was a regular on kick returns, but yes i agree he isnt the 5th wr. honestly, i wasn’t careful about how i inserted the guys we may not see for a while because my point wasn’t so much if 4 and 6 or 3 and 5 are hurt, the point is the 4th WR position is a huge weakness rt now.

at this point our 4th wideout has no nfl game experience and has no special teams skills.

i agree we should be able to keep a 4th wideout out of the offensive huddle but we are short on special teams now and are an injury away (even a mild miss a few plays injury) from not being able to use a 3 wr set with much confidence. since cleveland looks to have one of the worst secondaries in the league its a bit ill timed.

umm...actually thought his rankings were alright.....

although I’d have Jefferson #6 and “Rudy” at #7

I think Amendola is lucky if he's ahead of Jefferson on the depth chart,

let alone Stanback. I think he’s a long shot. We already have enough smallish possession receivers.

Hurd

Has caught everything that has come his way.. We will be fine with top 3 WR’s and top 3 TE’s

& running backs

all will be used in the passing game as well, i"ll be cool with any WRs we keep, I have"nt seen too many dropped passes & that works for me.

Hannah is a must keep

if Amendola/Lowbar don’t latch onto the bottom of the roster. Dallas has to have at least 4 WRs active on gameday, though. Red Ball will have to get creative.

That #38 sure should wrap up!

With the injuries at wide receiver, Phillips seemed to entertain the possibility of just activating three pass-catchers for the first few games

According to Wade……we might just role with 3 WR’s come game day….I’m all for it, At least til Austin comes back at full health…….Our 4th WR would hardly touch the field anyhow if it’s “Rudy” or Jefferson…

Take anything Wade Philips says with a grain off salt

there’s no way dallas is only taking three receivers to a game.
