McQuistan looks to be the favorite of replacing Kosier

The Cowboys' initial answer to the question about how to replace Kyle Kosier is plugging in Pat McQuistan at left guard.

McQuistan is working there with the first team during today's practice, which was open to the media for only the first 30 minutes (routine procedure from here on out). McQuistan has played primarily right tackle for the Cowboys, but he has worked some at guard.

Good

McQ seems a better option than Berger, Marten or Proctor. Maybe they’ll make him permanent LG backup or swing guard.

McQ, Berger and Procter will all get chances Thursday

Timmy Mac update

Pat McQuistan got the first crack at left guard during today’s practice, but the coaches will also consider Cory Procter and Joe Berger.

Wade Phillips said the Cowboys will decide on a replacement for Kyle Kosier after watching the game film of Thursday’s preseason finale against the Vikings. McQuistan, Procter and Berger will all get significant time at left guard.

“I think the tape will sway us one way or the other or keep us on whoever we thought it’d be in the first place,” Phillips said.

I thought Procter did a fine job replacing Gurode last season.

McQuistan and Berger are pretty much locks to make the team now. It’s going to be interesting to see who the coaching staff favors going into Cleveland.

Berger should provide some backup insurance. If he beats out McQ, McQ’s time in Dallas may be limited after Kosier and if the team needs to churn the bottom of the roster.

Remember Mcquistan was

working at guard 2 years ago. Some thought he was going to beat out Kosier.

I think Mcquistan would make real good guard

If given the opportunity. Looks like Wade thinks the same since he is giving him first cracks at it.

What's going to happen for the next 6 weeks

is we, fans, will see how much this team misses Kosier. He sticks his bearded face into those defenders, covers up Romo’s fumbles, 63’s his way between Flo and Gurode’s big ol’ bodies to quietly stabilize the left side.

Just because he’s between a bunch of Probowlers and not a brawler like Colombo, he gets overlooked. But why can’t anybody beat him out of his job? Because he is a starting quality LG for the Dallas Cowboys, which means any team in the league would be happy to have him.

no its because we don't have anyone any better

that doesn’t mean he’s a great guard. Kosier is okay, slightly above average at best. We’ll be okay so long as the remaining OL stay healthy.

I somewhat agree with Bigigga31

His mobility will be missed in those pulling guard outside runs and blocks at the secound lvl. Remember ( I do), Parcels and the gang brought him in here for his mobilty. Can McQ move like that? I don’t know, I hope he can move some or you won’t see as many Barber runs to the outside geting the 8-15 yards like we are use to.

That being said, I do think, or should I say hope, McQ. may be a upgrade on the runs up the middle just by the fact thats hes much bigger and hopefully he knows how th use it. I hope we dont’t see him getting pushed back into Tony Like we have seen happen to Kosair a time or two, but he’s Big and if he doesn’t bend and play with proper balance then it could be even worse.

So, I guess we just wait and see an hopefully survive and maybe even improve at the position.

The coaches have said time and time again

that they love how Bigg gets out in front of runs. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
