Mike Clayton

Even before Michael Clayton reintroduced himself to the end zone Saturday, the Bucs were fielding calls from other teams interested in trading for the enigmatic receiver. A change of scenery might be good for Clayton, who is in the final year of his contract

Does anybody know anything  about this receiver the Bucs might be trying to trade, and do you think Jerry is one of those calling.

Good luck in your quest

Personally, I think every line was relevant, this stuff has always been discussed in diaries/fanposts, and, while I greatly appreciate that people put up fanshots (and I have done several myself), I don’t see them anywhere near when they are posted because they are so buried. It would probably also have one or two comments, since few would see it.

I know Grizz, Bigham, Scott, etc. are big proponents of fanshots, and I of course defer to Grizz, but if it’s a legit topic for Cowboys-related discussion of general interest, I think it belongs in a fanpost. Stated differently, I think a good rule of thumb would be if you can’t legitimately meet the fanpost word limit without inserting a quote, it’s a fanshot. Otherwise, fanpost.

All of that said, I will defer to those that care about this issue much more than me. But those fanshots have to be viewed about 1/100th as often as fanposts.

I agree grapejoos

And really, if its in fanshots, chances are not many read it anyway, I know I rarely go to the basement of the blog to read them.

I’m sure this topic will get more responses in Fanpost and its relevant

Fair enough,

I didn’t even realize it was a quote due to the lack of quotations. I see now what you were saying above. I still like it as a fanpost, but I get your point.

Very interested.. Throw him and Simms together and we can talk anywhere from the 3rd to 5th round..

Michael Clayton came of of LSU in '04....he was rated fairly high among the top WR's selected that year...

His rookie year he cam out like gang busters, and put up big numbers for a rookie…80 receptions, over 1,100 yards….Has great size 6’4" 215lbs…has the speed, and playmaking ability…..He had a sophmore swoon and hasn’t recovered…I don’t know his problem, He did have some dropsy problems…but not like Williamson, etc ,etc,,,,It’s not like that had all pro QB’s over there these past 4 years either…..

I think on a great Offense, with an elite QB….the kid can produce…..He’s more experienced than all our WR’s (besides TO) ….IF Jerry is panicing and feels he needs a seasoned WR to come in on the cheep…….I say go for it. (4th-5th rounder or a 3rd and a 5th for Clayton and Simms)………..That being said, I really don’t feel Tampa will trade him…..If Galloway went down…they’d be pretty weak in the depth dept.

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."

There must be something wrong

His rookie year he put up awesome numbers, then 3 years in a row, very mediocre.

thats how you get value

If he was still killing you wouldn’t get him.. Maybe he is taking a couple of years off like Moss? He isn’t as talented as Moss, but just saying..

Michael Clayton

is the best possible chance for the Cowboys to both upgrade and add depth to the WR position. He can play; he ain’t that bad, but he’s not great. He’s solid, though.

And fast.

Another thing: I don’t care about his stats. I care what he can offer to this currently depleted corps. The other guys that are starting are the only guys’ whose stats I care about. If he can just come in and help, he’d be better than any other WR available.

I'll go by the Bucs blog

They don’t seem to have a high opinion of the guy.

Maybe he just doesn't fit the WR mold for a West Coast Offense

Maybe he’d be better in a vertical offense.

Interesting

I’d definitely consider it if I was Jerry. Though it does make you wonder about why he fell off so hard after his rookie year. And just what was the “undisclosed injury” that landed him on the injured reserve list in ’06?

This actually got me thinking about other potential prospects which led me to this guy. Apparently he’s now playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders up north.

by sublimezg on Aug 26, 2008 10:32 PM CDT reply actions

Wow

He is playing in the CFL. What a fall. If he could have just given up the weed. He has some real talent.
Despite that horrible 40 time, I’m sure he’s as fast as Limas Sweed and Malcolm Kelly.

Clayton is mostly an insurance policy in 2008

Clayton is definitely a more interesting guy than anyone on the laundry list of old receivers on the free agent market Grizz provided a few days ago. (I’m not knocking the discussion of that list; I just don’t find anyone there particularly attractive)

The downsides are:

(1) We would have to give up a valuable draft pick to get him.
(2) He is probably in the final year of his rookie contract, so there is a good chance that this would be trading a draft pick for a one (maybe two) year guy.
(3) Given that he was a first round pick, the $$ could be significant hit against this year’s cap.
(4) Finally, he would take the roster spot of a developmental guy….but you could make the case that Dallas would be trying to ‘re-develop’ Clayton.

The upsides are:

(1) He might provide valuable insurance this season. I think that the chance of him seeing the field on more than one or two plays a week is minimal while TO, Crayton and Hurd are healthy, and he would likely be inactive when Austin comes back. So as far as this season is concerned, we are really talking about buying insurance.

(2) A long shot is that Clayton just needs a change of scenery to re-develop into the receiver everyone though he would be after his big rookie year. I think this is unlikely, but if that indeed comes to fruition, then Dallas might have the inside track on re-signing him.

This is a tough call. My opinion is that he might be worth a sixth round pick in the 2009 draft, but only if Stanback is placed on IR.

Stats, stats, stats

The guy just needs to come in fresh to a new team and catch passes. It doesn’t matter to me that his stats have been declining. He’s caught alot more than other guys on the Cowboys. TO and Witten will be getting the stats anyways. We just need someone to come in here for depth that’s not too old and not too inexperienced.

That #38 sure should wrap up!

by Aaron Novinger on Aug 27, 2008 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Screw the stats

Im just not sure how a guy goes from damn near rookie of the year to damn near on the bubble without blowing out a knee or something like that. I mean if anything, the Bucs offense has gotten better since his rookie year, so its not like he was suffering from a bad QB or something like that.

I mean, he wasnt the most gifted athlete to begin with, I’m not really sure how he pulled of that rookie season he had. And I’m not saying I know because I dont, but when a guy falls of the map like that without a castrophic injury, you kind of have to question his drive dont you?

I dont know, there are no great options, and this one is no better than the others.

I don't think Galloway was there his rookie year.

Think Clayton was the #1 or new up and coming #2
