The last few roster spots (w/poll)

Lots of other version of this out there, but I figured I'd take my crack at it...

In tomorrow's game against the Vikings we'll be looking for the guys whose performance may decide whether they make the team or not.

Right now I'd say there are about 48 guys who are absolute locks to make the team (Romo Johnson Barber Jones Choice Anderson Witten Curtis Bennett Owens Crayton Hurd Austin Adams Kosier Gurode Davis Colombo McQuistan Free Procter Berger Canty Ratliff Spears Johnson Hatcher Bowen James Thomas Burnett Carpenter Ware Ellis Spencer Rogers Newman Henry Jones Jenkins Scandrick Hamlin Williams Watkins Brown McBriar Folk Ladouceur).

That leaves about 11 guys competing for the last 5 spots.

Here's the guys I think are on the bubble.

  1. James Marten
  2. Isaiah Stanback
  3. Danny Amendola
  4. Mike Jefferson
  5. Todd Lowber
  6. Rodney Hannah
  7. Evan Oglesb y
  8. Alan Ball
  9. Erik Walden
  10. Dowayne Davis
  11. Richard Bartel

James Marten - with Kosier out I think they'll keep 10 o-linemen, but there's a very outside chance they'd only go with 9, and he would likely be the odd man out.

Isaiah Stanback - I just include him because if he ends up on IR it opens one spot. If he's not on IR then he's a lock for the 53.

Danny Amendola, Mike Jefferson, Todd Lowber - I think they probably keep 1 of these 3 (or 2 if Stanback is IR), and which may depend on tomorrow's game. I think Lowber is the long shot, but I wouldn't say he has no chance because while he's the most raw of the bunch, he is the best athlete and probably has the biggest upside, and perhaps his exposure on Hard Knocks will make it harder for him to clear waivers and make the PS, although I'd bet that's where they'd like to have him. It's also possible that they pick someone up off the waiver wire so these guys are also competing against all the other WRs out there, but at any rate, at least 1 and probably 2 of those last 5 spots are WRs.

Rodney Hannah - unlikely they keep 4 TEs, but when you think about it, they almost never run 4 WR sets, but we're concerned about who the #5 and #6 WRs are (once Austin come back), yet they really like to run 3-TE sets, and we don't seem too worried about a 4th TE if one of the TEs goes down. Hannah has made some good impressions in the preseason and has value on special teams, so I think it conceivable that he could make the team if they felt like he was the best player for the last spot. Most likely they just try to put him on the PS and then activate him if needed.

Evan Oglesby and Alan Ball - very likely Ogelsby makes it as the 6th CB, but I wouldn't say he 100% yet and Ball may still have an outside shot and needs a great performance tomorrow to beat out Ogelsby. But one of the last 5 spots will go to one of these 2 guys.

Erik Walden - likely to make it, especially with Spencer down for a game or more to open the season, and he's a draft pick even if a 6th rounder.

Dowayne Davis - The talk about him has mainly been special teams, but he hasn't really shown much in preseason I don't think. I'd say he's a long shot now given how tight it is at other positions.

Richard Bartel - with too many guys for too few spots, they could easily go with just 2 QBs like last year, but if they think enough of his potential they may not want to risk losing him to another team by trying to get him on the practice squad, especially after Matt Moore last year. His future probably depends on how he does tomorrow night when he'll have the chance to start and play the entire game.

So... in conclusion... I think it is almost certain that they keep 10 o-line, 6 CBs and 5 WRs, so as I see it that basically leaves the last WR, Walden, Hannah, Davis and Bartel competing for the last 2 roster spots.

With the injuries at WR, I think the 6th WR is very likely, leaving Bartel and Walden as the guys with probably the best shot at the final spot, and the best shot at being the first guy outside the bubble.

Agree

I think Jefferson has a chance to push out Amendola, but it will be one of the two. Walden gets the nod in the poll because we drafted him when most thought he would be a UDFA…that indicates an intent to hold onto him.

After last night

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be Jefferson over Amendola. The guy needs to hit the PS and put on a bunch of muscle.

The reason why I chose Amendola at this point over Jefferson

is the fact that Amendola can play some special teams, especially with Stanback and Austin out with injury. Ofcource, the roster that’s cut down to 53 on saturday, might not be the 53 man roster week one in Cleveland..

If I thought dallas would keep four tightends instead of sixth receivers, which I dont see them doing at this point because of injury to Stanback and Austin, If the decision came down to Hannah, Amendola and Jefferson, I’d take Hannah, because of his upside.

Depends on other teams cuts

I still think the team may be keeping their eye open for another QB. If Bartel just explodes tomorrow night I think they have to keep him on the 53. If he doesn’t then I think Jerry and Garrett will be scouring the waiver wire for a new #3 which most likely would have to go on the 53. So I think Walden is the odd man out. As joos pointed out, most excepted him to be an UDFA and where surprised when he got drafted. He hasn’t exactly put together a highlight reel in the preseason, though he has shown a little bit of potential. Therefore I think the Cowboys feel they could get him on the PS fairly easily and will go that route.

Last five

Good fanpost Scott.

Stanback
Oglesby
Walden
Keon Lattimore (could backup RB and FB, can catch, might be good ST player also)
3rd QB

lattimore isn't making this team, Practice squad player

And I dont think Bartel has a chance of making this team as the third string QB

No, not Bartel, whoever they pick up as 3rd QB

Lattimore – maybe PS, but I could say the same about Marten (he still qualifies)

good point

like the WRs, Bartel is competing against the league QBs for that possible last spot.

Miami let Keith Davis go.

I could see him returning to shore up the special teams.

I want them to keep Hannah.

But I’m pretty sure they’ll keep Bartel, especially after his 3 TD 2 INT performance this Friday.

That #38 sure should wrap up!

They will not carry 3QBs on the 53

Well maybe if Bartel goes out there and is 25 for 31 with 4 TD then they might

also Jefferson has the lead onDanny in my opinion

I just hopre we can get Lober to the PS, because next year he could be something a little special and the year after he could be ………….well, Randy Moss like.
