Dolphins release safety Keith Davis
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2008/08/dolphins-rele-1.html
do we need him ?????????????
This is a strange and untimely move for several reasons.
First: Davis has been starting on practically every special team the Dolphins play. He has, by all accounts, acquitted himself well on those special teams. So that causes questions.
Secondly: The team is under the 75-man roster limit. It didn't need to release anyone. So it raises eyebrows that Davis would get released when there was no roster mechanism that required the move.
I am not suggesting the move is caused by outside circumstances but this smells funny.

I read up on what's out there on this.
Davis was on the flight to New Orleans and had been issued a room number. He had to have either; a: failed a drug test, :b committed some criminal act, : threw his jersey in the tuna’s face after practice….
Depending on the circumstances and our ST play so far…. GET HIM ASAP!!!!

We could use him on ST coverage, no doubt about that
I’m thinking Jerry needs to be calling down to Miami to get the inside scoop. Did Bullet mess up, get injured, or is this a courtesy early cut so he can land with another team?

Huh
We could use him on the cheap if his nose is clean. Maybe Miami Vice busted him!

Weird
He must have failed a drug test. That is the only thing I can think of for why Miami would cut him.

emergence of Chris Crocker?
The Phinsider (SBNation blog) has a fanpost that says this:
Davis, who spent his first five years in the NFL playing for the Cowboys, signed to a two-year deal in the offseason. He was expected to compete with Yeremiah Bell for the starting strong safety spot, and contribute primarily on special teams.
But the emergence of Chris Crocker, who is presently starting over Jason Allen at free safety, and last year’s starter, Renaldo Hill, who is recovering from an ACL injury he suffered last October, made Davis expendable.

If this is the case, and he was cut for this reason, Dallas needs to fly him in tonight!!

Or they're not looking to pay him 1 mm+ to simply be a special teamer...

Yeah,
I’d say Dallas has already moved on, and might as well continue to without him.

If special teams were bad last season,
and he was the captain, that doesn’t say much how he can improve it this season.
If he was the best player out there, what does that say about ST? Since the ST sucked last season and he was the best, it doesn’t give much credentials for him. One player is going to make the whole team better?
If he was the best ST player, why would Dolphins cut him. Something smells “fishy” in Dolphin marina.

Agreed, good points
Though I will say Davis was only one guy on the ST unit, and he did make a difference in some games. I seem to recall him being hyped for the matchup against the Bears and he totally shut down Hester.
As best I can recall, the biggest persistent ST problem we had last year was that we could never get a decent return, though our coverage certainly could have been better. Perhaps I have blocked out some painful memories, however.
I would welcome Davis back, and I think he’s worth a spot as a ST ace, but admittedly it’s a tough call as to who should be cut to make room.

BTW, I take some of this back
I just saw that we were bottom-10 in both kick and punt coverage last year. Yikes.

It's not the players that are the problem
To pick up a guy just to be a ST guy is not a smart move. If it’s a backup safety and ST guy we want then we have one already in Dowayne Davis who happens to be younger and cheaper.

Let's pass on Davis...
Who would you release to make room? We have 4 safeties who will all have active roles during the season. We have injuries at wide receiver and linebacker that will require carrying an extra body or two. I can’t see how we’d make room for a guy who’s only value is on special teams.
If my goal was to “fix” special teams play I’d bring back coach Joe before I’d open a roster spot for Keith Davis.
The Red Ball Express will be rolling this year!

Mosely on Davis
Mosely thinks Davis asked for his release because he wouldn’t start at safety:
I’ve heard from a source this morning that Davis asked for his release once it became clear that he wouldn’t be a starter in Miami. I’m shocked Parcells didn’t call him into his office and tell him to stop whining about playing time, but then, maybe he did at some point.
I talked to a Cowboys source this morning who said the team was doing its “due diligence” on Davis. In this case, due diligence means Jerry or Stephen Jones picking up the phone and asking Parcells what the heck happened.
As long as Davis isn’t injured or in trouble with the law, it makes sense that he’d land back in Dallas. The special teams unit is the weakest part of the team. Under coach Bruce Read last season, the coverage units weren’t particularly impressive and that has held true throughout the preseason.

he's not going to start
or even be #2 here, so coming back to Dallas wouldn’t change that

doubt its a drug test
i THINK the cba specifically bars a you from cutting a guy for failing a test. we did it to quincy and i think its still tied up in litigation
