Quick poll: Canty or Spears

I think a decision will have to be made whether to keep Canty or Spears by the end of the season. I don't think both players will be given new contracts based on other players like Tank, Colombo and Ware who need to be resigned. Based on "what have you done for me lately" the clear edge is Canty on being here long term. Spears has to show it, when it matters plain and simple. Not some meaningless pre-season games over a quarter or two. Spears is signed through 2010, but a decision on whether to trade him this off season (Miami?) could be made.

This could be a situation like Roy Williams where you give a player a new contract and he stops producing. I think and hopefully, I'm wrong that Spears new found motivation is only for a new contract and once he get's it he will turn into the average DE he really is and has shown over the past three seasons.

I still think Spears needs to find himself at NT to have a long term career here.

Until Spears plays better in games that count,

this is a no-brainer for now.

I’m curious what people would think on this question: Columbo or Canty/Tank?

personally

I would let Canty go before Columbo.. Move Ratliff outside and start Tank..

I would too

Columbo is underrated. I like Canty, but you gotta protect the QB.

Depends on how good they feel about the depth

at both positions. I would say Canty has the edge on Colombo. On Tank, it depends on what he does this season.

I think its a no brainer

Canty is clearly the more talented player, but for the right price I would like to see Spears re-signed as well.

I know u want an either or, but I just can't

I have completly bought into the idea that a STARTER is a reletive term. I think we should secure Ware, Columbo and Tank in that order, then try to get both these guys. If we are unable to get both one has to consider is were is your biggest need? who can play NT? Ratliff (but maybe a better DE), Tank. Who can play DE? Well We have a few don’t we. So lets look at it head to head DE both of them can play ( Canty has more sacks, but if u consider QB pressures, batted passes, forced fumbles, Tackles for loss, I think u would find the overall difference is minimal ( did a lot of searching and could not find a complete list ). They both also can play DT in the 4-3 ( could be wrong): But does Canty play any NT? I don’t think so. Then again, Canty may or maynot stnd up in go into some kind of preverse zone pass coverage, which I can’t invision Spears doing.

Now that I have made all these posts in Spear’s defense, I probably sound like a real Spear’s Homie. Well, I’m not, but I think he is a good 1st string worthy defencive lineman for any team in the league and you know…………thats heads and shoulders above most of the Defensive lineman available in the draft and for a year or two after they get in the league.

Ware and Spears we worry about after next season.....2009...not this offseason...

After this season….I see us signing Tank and Canty for sure, Kevin Burnett is due as well…..Columbo is sorta iffy…I’d like to retain him….but how bout if we were to draft a first round RT in the ‘09 draft….You would think he’d come right in and start, and be less expensive than resigning Columbo….but who knows……To get a real gauge on this matter…This season needs to be played out…

I would

rather see this team take a WR rather than a RT in teh 1st round next year,
