Dallas Cowboys trade for an offensive guard
Hat tip to my boy The Sports Guru, who was on this story at Mile High Report. From a Denver Broncos press release:
The Denver Broncos on Thursday traded guard Montrae Holland to Dallas in exchange for a fifth-round choice in the 2010 NFL Draft, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.
Holland, a sixth-year player, joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent on March 5, 2007, after spending his first four NFL seasons (2003-06) with New Orleans

This is a great move...
The Boys now have some experience at guard while waiting for Kosier to get healthy. Berger and McQ are untested and no one knows how theyll do with extended time against starters. Nice to have a safety net.
Only problem I see is that Dallas runs a COMPLETELY different blocking scheme than Denver.

+1
Good move. Remember though he was brought up in the Saints organization, so he can play in a power running game type offense.

Holy Lineman Batman!
You know what this says to me? It says that Free and Marten dont look like very good prospects!

6' 2" 322 Lbs
I thought the Denver linemen were supposed to be undersized. 322’s pretty big.

Oh, it also opens up the door for .......
Procter, or Berger to get the boot , my guess would be Berger unless he or the new guy can play center.
Chances are this guy was to big for the zone blocking scheme

I'm guessing Berger will be cut now
This guy just took his spot. They might keep McQ since he hasn’t really got a fair shot at guard yet.

berger can play center
Procter is a goner

Procter is our backup at center
I think Berger is trying to learn the position. If they cut Procter, we’ll have no backup.

I guess this means McQuistan and Berger
will be nothing more than career backups at best. Cowboys must have seen something in this kid when the team practiced with the Broncos a few weeks ago. Here’s Scout’s Inc take on him.
Holland is a short, thick offensive guard who can be effective in a short area. He has good initial quickness and get off, but lacks the kind of speed and agility to be effective on the pull. He is a little stiff in the hips and struggles when he has to roll his hips or re-direct with movement. He is more of a mauler and brawler than an explosive hitter who shocks opponents back with his initial pop. He is very inconsistent when it comes to bringing his feet with him on drive blocks and often does not do a great job of sustaining his blocks, especially in space. He has adequate lateral range in pass pro, and does a good job of recovering and righting himself versus counter moves. He is inconsistent at getting a good fit with his hands in pass pro and often lets opponents control his pads. While it appears he has a fair amount of raw physical talent to work with, he needs to refine his techniques and play under control more often.

Just from reading comments at Broncos blog
They seemed pretty surprised by this, and most were disappointed they didn’t get more than a (2010) 5th round pick as compensation. Although a couple posters mentioned he might be a surprise cut because of the fact that he arrived at camp overweight. (Overweight for Denver is over 300lbs.)
I’m feeling a whole lot better about Romo’s protection. Holland was a 16 game starter last season and sounds like a solid, dependable player (again from their comments).
Sounds like he certainly would have gotten picked up on waivers. Once again, good job Jerry.

wouldn’t make it thru waivers or they wouldn’t have made the trade.

Holland
He’s not outstanding by any stretch, but with a lot of good lineman around him, he’ll play a solid guard while Kosier is hurt.

This trade says alot about what we have at backup guard
Mcquistan,Berger and Marten better beware, the turk will be visiting one of you very soon

lol...The Turk is looming large at Valley Ranch.....
Being an FSU fan, I do recall good things from this mauling type guard back in the day…..He came into camp at over 350 lbs……He was isolated to an adjacent field where he was strickly pushing sleds for the first 2 weeks of camp….He went on to lose over 25 lbs. to get to his current 322-325 lb range….Sure, He got out of shape over the off season…..but what lineman doesn’t come in soft in the gut….anyhow…It’s quite obvious that Jerry, Wade, Houck, and Garrett didn’t like what they were seeing in practice out of our back ups….This guy is in the mold of a fire hydrant like Nate Newton, he is about 20 lbs. heavier than Kosier, and has 46 starts in the NFL to his credit……I like the move alot, on the surface…at the very least….We have “Experienced” depth on the O line…..does he perform so well that he keeps the spot over Kosier….that remains to be seen…….MacQuistan, Marten, Proctor, Berger, and Free are looking more and more like career back ups….
This is the reason you draft O Linemen on the first day of the draft, which I hope and pray we do next year….or you sign or trade for a proven lineman, or after 3 years of developing an average Joe…your caught with your pants down, with nothing to show for your efforts..

Well good thing he was available
I like this move a ton, assuming this guy is better than our other LG options. At his size, it sounds like he’d be ideal for a power running game like ours.
I’m not ready to write off Free, but it’s hard to disagree on the others. Free is the one guy they thought had enough potential at tackle to keep him there.

Holland returns
Broncos guard has weight in check
Associated Press
Tuesday, August 12, 2008
Montrae Holland was winded, rusty and a step slow — and he couldn’t have been happier. He’d much rather be a pulling guard than pushing a sled.
The Denver Broncos’ incumbent right guard, who spent the first two weeks of camp pushing sleds on an adjacent field after reporting out of shape and overweight, practiced for the first time Monday after getting down to his playing weight of about 325 pounds.
Rather be practicing
"I’ll tell you what, I’d rather practice any day than push them sleds all day," Holland said, looking back out onto the field that became his personal exile island, where he sweated off more than 25 pounds.
Holland worked with the second team offensive line but fully anticipates he’ll regain his starting job by the time the season starts.
"Oh yes. Man, I don’t care. I’m a starter in my heart and I’m going to do everything I can to get there," said Holland, who started all 16 games at right guard a year ago.
"Any time you miss two weeks of camp, you miss development and timing. Right now mine’s is a little off. At least now we’re practicing, so all I can do is get better."
Harder mentally
Working off that extra weight was actually harder on Holland mentally than physically, he said, because he knew he was falling behind his teammates and letting them down.
"I need to chip off some rust. I felt like today I was not as quick as I want to be because my timing" and technique were off, Holland said. "I mean, first day I’ve got to start somewhere."
And he’s not going to stop watching his weight, either.
"I’m going to lose a little bit more just because I feel like it will help me move quicker and be able to get out in front of these fast halfbacks we’ve got," Holland said with a big grin.
If Holland can make up for the time he missed, he could win his job back at right guard with Chris Kuper moving to right tackle, replacing second-year pro Ryan Harris, who had four penalties against Houston on Saturday night.
This is dated August 12th…..I really haven’t looked much deeper into his progression since….but I can only assume 3 weeks later his stamina and conditioning has improved, and he may have dropped a few more pounds….In any event…..I like the move, and I once again can only assume he’s a better option than Berger, Marten, Proctor, and MacQ…….hopefully can come right in tonight and get some action, and learn the blocking schemes over the next week or so…..Remember….We practiced against this guy for a few days…and Jerry must have taken notice, and I’m sure we have some film on him going against our guys….and his past 46 starts as well…..I’m looking forward to what this bulldog can do….

there is no excuse for showing up to camp out of shape and 25 pounds over the teams weight requirement
by Deke on Aug 28, 2008 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe
He fits our mold with his size, oppose to the quick zone blocking Denver likes. I think it is interesting the traded with a team they had a couple of practices against. Maybe Houck saw something in him?

agreed
that was my thinking, the team must really not be comfortable with the back-ups.I am glad they decided to make a move when they noticed a weakness.

Mc Q is not in any danger!
McQ is still the swing taclke obviouly better than Free, or maybe I’m wrong and they were trying to find a spot for him, but I don’t think so. My guess is is the lack of depth at Back up Tackle promted this move!

one advantage of practicing with another team
like we do with Denver, we get a close look at their players that we would not otherwise get in case there might be a good match for a trade should the need arise, as obviously happened this time.
